Chapter 38 - 38: Reaper's Academy!????

Crowds of people swarmed into a large campus just outside of Arc. The surrounding buildings eclipsed that of a normal academic building, and it felt more like stepping into an oversized castle with its stone architectures and arches riddled through the building.

As the crowds slowly dwindled away with people entering into the building the view of the trees and the far-off fountain became visible. With the breeze, tree and the stone benches, it felt like walking though some luxurious park made for the most noble of men,

"Wow..." Megumi gazed around in amazement, entranced by the scenery before her. She would never have expected to see such a beautiful place from the Reapers corp. academy. Or what they called 'RCA'.

Donovan patted Megumi on the shoulder. "C'mon, don't just stand around. We're wasting time."

"O-oh right!"

Megumi followed behind Dino who was wearing some new clothes. He didn't change much in overall appearance and style. The only change he made was the new red over shirt and jeans. He was forced to exclude his combat knife, but he didn't seem to care much about it.

Meanwhile Megumi still wore the same clothes, which Dino Finally questioned her about. "You didn't change clothes?"

"I-I Didn't have time to shop for clothes yesterday. I was hoping to shop today, but I didn't expect Cider to cause such a ruckus with the neighbors. I kind of feel bad though since K has him doing chores."

"Don't feel bad. K already warned him not to bother those people. It's not like we force that kid to go bother them."

"I guess you're right."

As Megumi glanced back around she noticed that people seemed to be playing with some strange powers from manifesting fire in their hands like magic to conjuring a sword.

"I thought we weren't able to use our powers in the Arc..."

"It's forbidden to use in the city. But you're thinking about the demons with the collars. They're the ones that can't use their powers. Besides that, only applies to inside the city, anything outside is still fair game," Dino demonstrated simply manifesting a crystal that hovered over his hand before dissipating it.

"Well, how do you know that for sure?"

"I made sure to check with Liang. He said there was no problem."

Megumi could imagine Liang giving a thumbs up.

Megumi returned to glancing around at the scenery and through the crowds. Eventually within the small crowd of people entering, Megumi caught a glimpse of Kailey. "Kailey? What is she doing here?"

Megumi waved fiercely, trying to get Kailey's attention. She seemed to be wearing something more casual than last time.

"Het Kailey!" Megumi called. She called again but still got no response. It wasn't long until Kailey entered the building without batting an eye.

"What was that about? I'm sure she could've heard me."

"Don't worry about it." Dino looks at a sheet of paper he pulled from his pocket. "Apparently, we have to take an exam as soon as we get to our rooms...Apparently mine is 'M215' And yours is.... F666... Well, isn't that lucky..."

Megumi took a glimpse at the sheet he had in hand. She saw that it was indeed 'F666'. She cringed seeing the room she was given.

"At least you won't forget." Dino said.

Megumi could only sigh at his comment. "Whatever."

Dino pulled the note back up. "Alright. So, when we're done in those rooms. We have to go to the auditorium where the principal will give a speech. Then we'll be separated and judged differently. Grimms."

"Different grimms?"

"Yeah. Liang told me that grimms sometimes take up new recruits too from the batches of new people that pass. It's not very often though. Usually, everyone comes back here to study and train with their powers. It's just that there are those that are chosen to have a mentor to boot."

"So, kind of like a head room teacher?" Megumi pondered.

"I guess... Oh, and here."

Dino handed Megumi a parchment.

"What's this?" She opened it up, revealing a map.

"It's a map of the academy. It should keep you from getting lost." Dino noted.

With the map handed off, Dino took his leave. "My room is this way. I'll catch up with you at the auditorium."

"Megumi waved. "Sure thing." She looked back at the map and then her surroundings. "It would've been nice if he told me which way my room was though..." She muttered.

"Oh" Deciphering the map, Megumi entered straight ahead though the same entrance as Kailey.

Unknown to her, someone was watching her from afar. His round nose perked, and a grin formed on his face. "Would you look at that, we meet again."

********

Megumi walked through the modern looking halls. It felt like a strong contrast to the stone castle she was just outside of, but didn't pay it much mind. She looked around, finding the rooms with the 'F'. She went up several staircases to the sixth floor where the 'Six-hundreds' were.

"Here we go." Megumi pushed on through the hall of numerous doors. "Six-fifty... Six-fifty-seven... Six sixty-two... Six six six..."

Megumi stood in front of the bland looking at a wooden door, not too different from what you'd find in a public institution.

She slowly pulled her hand forward, as Liang's warning rang through her head. "[Whatever you do. Don't let your guard down for even a second.]"

"Everything's so normal. He was probably just teasing aga-"

Megumi opened the door to chaos. Men and women alike were fighting and buzzing each other with their own individual powers that ranged from zapping to punching with a large fist.

The walls were sturdier than Megumi expected as she saw someone punched with a huge fist.

"Uuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhh..."

"Is this what Liang meant...?" Megumi wondered.

"It looks like I got the rowdiest ones, huh? "

Megumi jumped, shocked that someone was standing behind her.

A tall sickly man stood behind her, He had bags under his eyes and carried a disparaging aura around him. He fixed his short brown hair and eyed Megumi with his hazel eyes.

"Well? What are you waiting for?"

Megumi reluctantly slinked inside as the people continued to bicker and fight for who knows what reason.

Not long after he closed the door on her. "Wait a minute, isn't he supposed to come in too!!??"

A chair flew over Megumi's head and another person sent a spear that almost struck Megumi. "Eep!"

The woman that threw the spear was then punched in the face by another as the conflict continued. A sudden urge to fight rose within her. It was like a rage building inside of her.

She glanced around further, noticing that a few people were seated at desks staying calm in contrast to the chaos with some of them dodging the thrown objects.

It was at this moment Megumi realized that the exam had already begun. She knew that whatever was affecting them, she had to resist.

She made her way through between the wall and row of desks, fighting every urge to become violent, it felt somewhat similar to how her dark copy, or her shadow would intrude on her mind. The only difference was that she could keep the door closed in her mind.

Shake struggle, avoiding a few more chairs and a few more attacks that missed. Eventually she took the desk furthest back where another woman sat with her feet on the table.

She wore black jeans and tank top that only covered just under her chest. she also had a long white over shirt that hung like a lab coat as leaned back on her chair.

She also had extreme hair that she rested on the back of her hands, while she had a wide smile plastered on her face and sported red dartboard-like eyes. "Boy they're really going at it aren't they!" She laughed.

It was amazing, it was like she was an impervious fortress with how calm and collected she was.

"Hey. Haven't I seen you before? The woman wondered."

Megumi struggled to muster out the words but was able to manage to her own surprise. "I... I don- I don't think We've... Met..."

The woman leaned back forward, placing her hands on her and staring at Megumi with her continuous smile. It began to creep Megumi out. "Hmmmm... Oh yeah! You're that girl from the square yesterday when that guy fell from the sky!"

Megumi instantly understood the event she was referring to too. "She saw me at the square?"

The woman reached out her hand, smiling more friendly. "M'names Sayko. Nice to meet ya!"

Feeling the urge to fight, leave, she reached out her hand and shook Sayko's hands. "M... Megumi... Megumi scorn."

"Oh, what an interesting name!"

"Alright! That does it for the first part." A man suddenly spoke.

Megumi turned to find that same slinky man from earlier, and to her shock the fight was suddenly over with everyone that fought, limp on the ground.

"U-uuhh... what... just happened?"

Several men and women with robes entered and carried out the unmoving people from the room leaving only seven people including Megumi in the room.

The tall man sharpened his eyes at the remaining examinees. "It looks like we have a couple more than expected... no matter."

The man's frown slowly shifted to that of a smile. "You all will be given a series of questions. One wrong answer and you will be disqualified. Anyone who speaks out, will be disqualified. And any divulging or receiving of the answers... and you will be disqualified. Have I made myself clear?"

The man's statement hit almost everyone like a ton of bricks, aside from Sayko and one other person. A cold sweat ran down everyone's faces.

A woman with blonde hair then spoke up. "S-sir you can't be-"

"Angela singer has failed. You may leave now." The man gestured towards the door leaving almost everyone stunned. Even Angela froze, not sure whether or not he was serious.

Just as she was about to speak up again, she met the man's frozen gaze. She hunched over with her head down and shook. As much as she didn't want to go, she understood that there was no point in arguing. "O...Okay"

She pushed herself up, leaving the room with her head down.

The door closed behind the women with an audible click.

"Am I understood?" The man repeated.

Everyone nodded their heads.

"Very good."

A chalk board manifests behind the man along with a set of chalk. He took a chalk in hand and began to scribble fiercely.

"As your examiner for the day, you can call me Heim." The man had spelled his name clearly for all to see. Not long after the writing disappeared like magic. A quick smirk perked on the man's face.

"Now. As your first question, I'd like everyone to say my name. I'll go through each of you one by one."

"What? That's easy."

"Charles."

"Correct!"

Megumi was flabbergasted. "What!!?"

"Nikola" The second said.

"Correct!"

"James."

"Correct!"

"Cesar."

"Correct!"

"Arnold," Sayko said.

"Correct!"

The man then pointed to Megumi leaving her in a stunned silence.

"We're waiting." the man pried.

"H... Heim?"

The man's mouth twitched, and silence had filled the room. Everyone stared, seeing her as his next victim to be booted.

"Correct..."

He turned back to the board. "Your next question will be a multiple-choice answer."

The man scribbled onto the chalkboard. As he did, an orb appeared before everyone with answers to a question still being made.

The answers presented were:

A. 28

B. 7

C. 14

D. 35

But looking upon the chalkboard, nothing was being written down.

"You all have one minute to answer." He continued scribbling nothing on the chalk board as a timer started.

"How are we-"

DING

Sayko was the first to answer correctly. Another had answered correctly then another.

BRR

It sounded like someone got the question wrong now along with another person. This left Megumi as the only person that didn't answer. And there was only thirty seconds left!

Panic started to settle in. But this was interrupted by the loud banging of Sayko putting her feet on her desk.

"No feet on the desk," the man said.

"Sorry, teach. I was getting a little bored." she brought her feet down.

It was at that moment Megumi saw a word floating in the air. She gazed around finding another word. Then another and another after that.

Putting it together the question it was formulating was, 'How many sins are there?'

Without a second thought she hit 'B' with an audible ding that followed.

The man broke his chalk and glared sharply at Megumi. He averted his gaze but by then Megumi took note of this interaction.

"Congratulations to everyone that's made it thus far. Those of you that failed, I would have to ask you to leave now."

The failed examinees left the room, leaving only four people in total left. The tall man stroked his chin. "Just three more questions left..." he muttered to himself. "Hmph."

Sayko then raised her hands, prompting the examiner to allow her to speak. "If you don't mind me asking, What's your actual name?"

The examiner blurted out a chuckle. "If you must know, my actual name is Sar's. But you should be less worried about my name and more worried about getting your questions correct."

"Now let's see..." Sar stroked his chin as if pondering the next question to ask. A devilish smile then formed on his face. He then took his chalk up and started scribbling in the air as if writing on the chalkboard.

Words suddenly appeared throughout the entire room. And like flies they darted around the room. A pen and paper suddenly appeared in front of everyone. A cold sweat ran down Megumi's face as Sar's spoke up once more.

"Now... Using your own words, please answer this question. You have five minutes."

Sar perked a smile. Now awaiting the answer to this newly posed question.
