Chapter 186 -175: Offering Plans and Strategies (1)
Lu Jiaxin got up at five-thirty in the morning, and not seeing Guh Xiuxiu, she asked about her only to learn she was still asleep. The older one gets, the less they sleep, and too much sleep during the day could mean trouble sleeping at night.
“Why didn’t you wake Aunt up?”
Aunt Mei explained, “The old lady was a bit tired from playing cards today. It’s rare for her to sleep so soundly; waking her would only make her angry.”
Lu Jiaxin frowned and said, “Even if she gets angry, we should wake her, or else sleeping too much now could mean trouble sleeping tonight. It’s even worse for the body to have disrupted sleeping habits at an old age.”
Just then, the sound of a car horn came from outside, and soon Guh Haifan walked in. He had learned from Guh Xiuxiu yesterday that Lu Jiaxin would be coming over, and upon seeing her, he tentatively called out, “Cousin.”
Su Heyuan mentioned that when Guh Haifan first arrived in Hong Kong, he was as skinny as a beanpole with sallow skin. He’s still lean now but has a healthy complexion and looks better.
Lu Jiaxin smiled and nodded, “Aunt is still asleep; let’s go wake her up for dinner!”
Seeing his hesitation, Lu Jiaxin explained the reason for doing so. If it were a younger person, she wouldn’t disturb them, as young people recover quickly and can be full of energy again after staying up late. However, for the elderly, a bad night’s sleep can lead to a lackluster day.
Guh Haifan followed Lu Jiaxin upstairs after hearing the explanation.
“Thump…”

After only one knock, Guh Xiuxiu responded.
Guh Xiuxiu was already up, doing her hair, and looked surprised to see the sibling duo, “Why is it just the two of you? Where are Aunt Hong and Aunt Mei?”
Lu Jiaxin explained why and then mentioned that sleeping too much during a nap can lead to trouble sleeping at night. She did this because Guh Xiuxiu had been good to her and hoped her health would improve sooner.
Guh Xiuxiu nodded in agreement, “You’re right; one really shouldn’t sleep too much during the day. Have you had your dinner? If not, go downstairs and eat.”
Lu Jiaxin was somewhat surprised, “Aunt, aren’t you going to eat?”
Guh Xiuxiu replied she had had afternoon tea and wasn’t hungry yet, she’d need to eat later. Digestion isn’t as good at an old age; it had only been three hours, and she hadn’t digested food yet.
For dinner, there were four dishes and one soup: braised pork, steamed turbot, homestyle dry pot tofu, blanched water spinach, and stewed fish maw.
Guh Haifan was surprised to see the braised pork and dry pot tofu. During the past three months here, the food had been plentiful but mild in taste. He wasn’t accustomed to these flavors but never mentioned it; being able to eat so well was already a grace from Aunt, asking for more would be excessive.
Being younger, he couldn’t hide his feelings, and his thoughts were written all over his face. As Lu Jiaxin sat down and took a piece of braised pork, she thought to herself, mmm, not bad, on par with the craftsmanship of a state hotel’s master chef.
Guh Haifan ate two bowls of rice, polishing off the braised pork and dry pot tofu, while he barely touched the steamed turbot, vegetables, and soup because he was too full.
When he finished and saw Lu Jiaxin looking at him, an embarrassed Guh Haifan said, “Cousin, I’m sorry, the food was so delicious today I couldn’t control myself.”
Lu Jiaxin shook her head and said, “The braised pork and dry pot tofu were made by Master Huang according to my taste preferences. If there’s anything you want to eat in the future, just tell Master Huang directly, and have him prepare it to your liking.”
Guh Haifan was taken aback and asked cautiously after a moment’s pause, “Cousin, is that really alright?”
“Of course it is; food that doesn’t appeal to one’s own tastes isn’t enjoyable to eat.”
Guh Haifan expressed some concerns in a soft voice, “But Aunt Hong says eating food that’s too strongly flavored is bad for your health, and we should eat bland dishes like Aunt does.”
Jiaxin didn’t say that Aunt Hong was wrong. She smiled and replied, “Eating like that all the time isn’t good, but if you occasionally crave something, just let Master Huang cook it for you. Don’t worry so much; Aunt loves us dearly and definitely wants us to eat and drink well.”
Guh Haifan turned towards Guh Xiuxiu, who was standing in the middle of the stairs, and asked, “Aunt, can I ask Master Huang to make braised pork if I want to eat it in the future?”
Seeing him speak so cautiously, Guh Xiuxiu couldn’t help but feel compassion, “Of course you can. From now on, whatever you want to eat, just let Master Huang make it for you.”
Jiaxin added, “Haifan, if you want something to eat, tell Master Huang in advance so that he can prepare the ingredients.”
Guh Haifan’s eyes sparkled brightly, and he happily said, “Thank you, Aunt.”
It was too hot to go out during the daytime when the sun was blazing, but now that the sun had set, it was quite cool outside. Guh Xiuxiu said to Guh Haifan, “You’ve eaten a lot, go outside and walk for an hour, then come back and do your homework.”
Guh Haifan left the house cheerfully.
“Jiaxin, come with me to the backyard for a walk.”
Once outside, Guh Xiuxiu said, “Last time you went back, He Bin mentioned that you bought a lot of magazines home, including economic newspapers and magazines. Do you understand them?”
“Only some of it.”
Guh Xiuxiu spoke, “I played mahjong with a few old friends today, and they talked about stocks. Since you like reading financial newspapers and magazines, what do you think about the outlook for stocks?”
Jiaxin felt it was hard to say, “Aunt, stock prices go up and down, and big surges and drops are related to the situation or policies. You’re of an advanced age and shouldn’t be subjected to such stress; it’s best not to invest in stocks.”
Guh Xiuxiu shook her head, “A few years ago, during a big market surge, I invested over three million in stocks, and in just over two months, it increased to more than five million. I couldn’t bring myself to sell, and in the end, the company went bankrupt and liquidated, causing me to lose all my investment.”
Since then, she had been too afraid to invest in stocks again. Even when everyone said the stock market was doing well and it was possible to make money, she didn’t get tempted despite having the spare cash.
Jiaxin asked, “Aunt, how much spare cash do you have on hand?”
Guh Xiuxiu didn’t avoid the question and said, “Around six hundred eighty thousand; it’s rent from last year and dividends from He Group. The interest from leaving this money in the bank isn’t high, and previously when I had spare money, I would invest in real estate. But with the property market being in a slump these past two years, I’m also reluctant to buy buildings.”
After considering for a moment, Jiaxin said, “Aunt, as a special economic zone, Yangcheng City will definitely attract many businessmen to invest. No matter what kind of business they are in, if it involves exports, it has to go through Hong Kong. Aunt, with more people coming in, do you think property prices will rise or fall?”
Guh Xiuxiu understood, “Are you suggesting that property prices will soon rise?”
Jiaxin nodded slightly, “Hong Kong has limited land but a high population; property prices will definitely go up. Investing in real estate will definitely not result in loss for you. However, don’t put all your eggs in one basket, you can still appropriately invest in some stocks. Hmm, if you’re worried about losses, then invest in some reputable stocks to hold over the long term.”
“Which stocks do you think are suitable for long-term holding?”
Jiaxin explained, “For long-term investment, stocks from large companies are safer. Stocks from big corporations like Cheung Kong Industries and New World Development are good options. Oh, and HSBC Bank isn’t bad either.”
Guh Xiuxiu was only testing him initially, but she didn’t expect such a clear and coherent explanation. Now she was certain that this young girl truly understood the financial magazines. A sixteen-year-old girl, not from a wealthy or illustrious family and with no one to guide her, yet she understood so much. Guh Xiuxiu felt she had underestimated Jiaxin.
