Chapter 169: Chapter 169 Rich Master Li
The host of the house, Rich Master Li, was seated at the forefront of the opera stage, accompanying several of his concubines and the village head, along with a few highly esteemed elders from the village. They sat there enjoying the opera and sipping tea, looking quite proud of themselves.
After all, there were very few in all around the neighborhood who could afford to hire a troupe to perform in their own grand residence. Today, on the first day of the Lunar New Year, villagers from several neighboring villages had heard the news and rushed to his estate to watch the grand opera. He felt exceedingly honored.
Lost in his proud moment, a roof tile suddenly fell from the sky…
“Clatter.”

It struck the opera stage in an instant, posing a threat to the lives of the actors. They screamed in terror and scurried for cover, heads in arms, as the stage erupted into chaos.
There was no way the performance could continue for the time being.
Villagers standing further away, inside and outside the estate, did not know what had happened and craned their necks in curiosity, looking on in bewilderment.
It was the sharp-eyed troupe leader who noticed the broken roof tile on the ground. Looking up, he saw a figure flash across the rooftop. He hurriedly picked up the broken tile and brought it to Rich Master Li…
“Old Master, look, these tiles were thrown down from the rooftop.” Not finished, he added, “We’re just here to perform, Old Master, you have to ensure our personal safety!”
Upon hearing this, Rich Master Li flew into a rage. He immediately commanded a dozen house servants, “Quick, go catch the person on the roof for me. How dare someone be so insolent as to throw things on my roof? Who is that good-for-nothing who doesn’t wish to live?”
The concubines hurried forward, their voices tinged with coaxing sweetness, “Old Master, don’t be angry, it’s New Year’s Day. It’s not worth it to harm your health over this.”
“Old Master is just too kind-hearted, allowing so many poor folks into our house to watch the opera. That’s why these vexing things happen.”
The concubines spoke over one another.
The previously elated Rich Master Li was now beside himself with annoyance.
Rooftop
Big Bull, having accidentally kicked a tile off the roof and alerted the homeowner, had already scooped up Xuexue and leaped down quietly from the rooftop, blending in with the onlookers as an ordinary villager.
So when the dozen or so fierce-looking house servants, armed with sticks and carrying ladders, searched the whole rooftop and found not a single soul, they were utterly baffled.
“Big Bull, let’s go,” whispered Xuexue, tugging gently at Big Bull’s sleeve from within the crowd.
“Okay.”
Big Bull agreed with a single word and turned to leave with Xuexue.
As their figures were about to disappear around the corner, a man dressed in fine clothes turned around in the crowd and caught a fleeting glimpse of Big Bull’s figure.
“Master?”
The man’s face lit up with ecstatic surprise, but when he took a closer look, the Master’s figure had vanished. In a panic, he quickly pursued them, but at the turn of the corner, he was confronted with several diverging paths leading in different directions. For a moment, the man did not know which way to chase and stomped his feet in frantic indecision.
Big Bull and Xuexue did not head straight home but made their way to a hollow in the mountains at the edge of the village.
Xuexue had always suspected Big Bull was the man from that night, so she brought him here outright to see his reaction.
“My lady, why aren’t we going home? What are we doing here?” Big Bull asked as he walked through the hollow, quite puzzled.
“We’re free anyway, so I thought we’d take a walk here,” Xuexue replied as they walked. Arriving at the scene of that night’s incident, she saw the pile of leaves she had scattered on the man, now spread all over the ground.
The eyes of the man who had wanted to kill her that night flashed before her again, and Xuexue found it impossible to compare the man before her to the honest and simple Big Bull.
“My lady, what’s wrong? Are we going to take these leaves home to use for firewood?”
Xuexue stared at the pile of leaves absentmindedly, and Big Bull, thinking she wanted to take them home, bent down, scooped up a large handful into his arms, and gave Xuexue a goofy smile.
