Chapter 401 -401: Is Foster Jeffrey Getting Engaged?
Lincoln Green’s post-surgery recovery was okay. However, long-term medication would still be needed for his coronary heart disease. The same went for his cerebral thrombosis, both being chronic conditions.
When Abigail Green arrived at the hospital, Lincoln had just finished a check-up. Upon seeing her, he was filled with surprise. “Abigail, you’re here?”
“Yes.” Abigail glanced at the much older Lincoln, nodding slightly. “I’ve spoken to the doctor about your condition. There’s not much need for you to stay in the hospital. I’ll have someone handle your discharge procedures in a while. You can recuperate at home or go to a quieter recuperation facility. What do you plan to do?”
“I…” Lincoln was momentarily at a loss, unsure of what to do. After a long pause, he hoarsely asked, “What about you? Are you leaving Gills City?”
“Yes, school is starting soon.” Abigail responded indifferently. She felt neither compassion nor hatred towards Lincoln, merely fulfilling her nominal duty as a daughter.
“Oh, it’s time for school again.” Lincoln mumbled softly, having almost forgotten that Abigail was still a freshman.
Guilt filled his heart even more.
“I’ve hired new servants for the mansion. Your thirty percent share was returned due to the invalid sale. I’ll have the company’s finance department deposit your earnings into your account after deducting the monthly villa and servant expenses.”
“Oh, thank you.” Lincoln noted Abigail’s coldness and replied softly.
Seeing this, Abigail said, “If there’s nothing else, I’ll be leaving.”
“Abigail…” Lincoln called out hastily.
Abigail paused. “Do you have any other matters?”
“Will… will you come back?” Lincoln’s voice was low and filled with reluctance.
“Grandfather Piers will stay in Gills City, so I should be back.” With that, Abigail said no more and left the ward immediately.
Lincoln lay stunned on the hospital bed. Abigail had said she would come back, but it was because of Grandfather Piers. What about him?
He wanted to ask, but in the end, he couldn’t bring himself to say it. He also knew he was not entitled to it.
After Abigail left, a private nurse who had completed Lincoln’s discharge procedures came in. “Mr. Green, your discharge procedures are complete. Do you plan to return to the Green’s Mansion or go to the recuperation facility?”
“I… I’ll go home.” Lincoln hesitated for a moment and replied softly. As long as he went home, Abigail would still have her family to return to, wouldn’t she?
However, Lincoln knew this was just his wishful thinking.
After speaking, his expression darkened. The private nurse shook her head at the sight. She had been looking after Lincoln these past days and had heard a bit about his past actions. Seeing him like this, she couldn’t help but think, “If you had known it would come to this, why did you act that way in the first place?”
“I’ll take you home. Miss Green asked me to stay and look after you.” The private nurse said professionally after her sigh.
“Is that so?” Lincoln was deeply moved upon hearing this.
These days, he had come to truly appreciate his daughter’s kindness, but… He couldn’t help but whisper involuntarily, “Abigail, Abigail…”
After leaving the hospital, Abigail had no intention of returning to the mansion. She instructed the driver to take her to Flora.
Pullan knew the place. It was the apartment he had selected, thinking Abigail was there to settle house matters. This time, Aunt Claudia would also return to Swallow City with them, so he didn’t think much about it.
Unexpectedly, upon reaching the apartment building, Abigail commanded Pullan, “Wait for me here. I have some things to handle upstairs. I’ll come find you when I’m done.”
“Master Brandon told me to protect you closely!” Pullan said anxiously.
“So, are you planning to listen to him now or me?” Abigail looked at Pullan coolly.
Pullan’s body tensed. “Young Mistress, I…”
“Believe it or not, I’ll report to your master that you’re not following orders.” Abigail’s tone was casual, but the threat was merciless.
Pullan looked miserable. “Young Mistress…”
“Just wait. Nothing will happen to me.” Abigail turned and walked away before Pullan could finish his complaint.
Pullan, threatened, meant to follow but stopped instantly at Abigail’s glance, standing there obediently, watching Abigail enter the apartment building with a look of grievance.
Abigail had bought this apartment for Aunt Claudia. It was in the same building but a different floor from the one she used to live in. As she entered and was about to press the elevator button, two doctors in white coats hurried inside, led by Irene Wallis.
“You?” Irene hadn’t expected to see Abigail Green here.
Abigail was also surprised to see Irene at this time. She smiled slightly. “Hello.”
“Who is she?” The girl next to Irene asked curiously, eyeing Abigail’s figure deliberately after asking.
“Oh, this is Master Brandon’s fiancée. You should know of her.” Irene smiled elegantly, purposely omitting Abigail’s name.
“What… She’s Master Brandon’s fiancée? This… hahaha, with Master Brandon being such an extraordinary individual, how could he choose such a fiancée?” The girl next to Irene said exaggeratedly, bursting into laughter, and then lowered her voice deliberately.
But in the confined space of the elevator, even a lowered voice was loud enough for Abigail to hear clearly and recognize her.
Irene hurriedly stopped her. “Don’t say that. Miss Green is only overweight after childbirth.”
“Already had a child and still just a fiancée? I doubt Master Brandon truly likes her.” The girl muttered again.

Irene looked apologetically at Abigail. “I’m sorry. My friend isn’t very good with words…”
“It’s okay if she’s not good with words. I’m broad-minded and kind, but my fiancé isn’t as easy to talk to. You’re Doris Symons, an intern in Sincere Hospital’s Surgery Department, right? Hmm, I remember.” Abigail responded coolly. If she recalled correctly, this particular intern was often reprimanded by her and liked to go rogue.
“You… What do you mean? How do you even know my name?” The girl intern looked at Abigail with annoyance, feeling threatened.
“Oh.” Abigail’s gaze fell on the intern’s white coat, left on due to an apparent rush. Sincere Hospital was very close to Flora, and many capable doctors bought apartments here for convenience. Still, it was lunchtime; they must have had urgent business.
Yet, she hadn’t identified her by the name tag.
“You…”
“Sorry, Miss Green. My friend was rude. Please don’t mind her.” Before Doris could say more, Irene apologized again, stepping in first.
Doris was displeased. “Irene, you don’t need to apologize for me. Who is she, anyway? Even if Piers had shares in Sincere, Dean Foster still holds the primary control. Aren’t you close to being engaged? Ask the Dean to help; I don’t believe he wouldn’t favor us over some overweight woman.”
“Shh, don’t speak nonsense about Jeffrey and me. It’s the wishes of our elders and hasn’t been publicly announced yet.” Irene shushed Doris, but her face was filled with pride.
Abigail was briefly taken aback. Her senior was getting engaged to Irene? It was their families’ wish?
But she realized that Irene, though different from her memory, was indeed an excellent doctor. Their match seemed fitting.
Abigail hadn’t noticed that this time, despite feeling a bit lost, she was mostly relieved.
