Chapter 154 - Two Mutants

The small crowd listened in awe as she regaled them with exaggerated details. The horde, initially reported as tens of millions, had grown to hundreds of millions in her tale. For these workers, Zack was nothing short of a mythical figure. The girls were especially enamored. To them, Zack was not only their savior but also a hero who had rescued them from their grim fates at the northern base. "Sir Zack is amazing!" one girl declared.

"Obviously!" another chimed in. "I heard he turned Washington DC into a sub-base and renamed it the Southern Base."

"Tch. I don't like them," someone else muttered, prompting nods of agreement.

The disgust for the Southern Base didn't last long. The mention of Zack brought smiles and animated chatter back to the group."I wonder what Sir Zack is doing right now," someone mused.

"Probably something incredible," another said wistfully.

"I miss him..." one girl sighed.

"Me too!" came the chorus of agreement.

The girls' conversation faded into daydreams about Zack, their thoughts carrying them far away.

Meanwhile, in Tribeca Just kilometers away, in Zack's private mansion, Mia and her companions limped down the stairs, holding onto each other for support. They had prepared breakfast with visible exhaustion, their movements slow and deliberate. "Miss them? They don't know what they're envying," Mia grumbled under her breath.

The rest nodded silently. After Zack's grueling training and the aftermath of the massive zombie wave, they had been pushed to their limits. Despite working together with Sophia and Ava, they couldn't match Zack's relentless energy, leaving them sore and bruised.

The meal was simple but hearty. Everyone gathered around the table: Zack, Sophia, Erza, Annie, Mia, Ava, Scarlett, and Gwen. It was a full house, almost like a big family coming together. At the table, Annie tugged on Erza's sleeve. "Sister Ezra, why did you make me sleep next door last night?" she asked, her innocent eyes wide.

Erza's face flushed red. "Ahem... You'll understand when you're older," she mumbled, avoiding eye contact.

"Oh," Annie replied, her curiosity satisfied for now. After breakfast, Zack headed to the biology lab. The facility was quiet, save for the muffled cries coming from one of the isolation rooms. Inside, two mutants who had once been under Kane's control now sat in relative comfort. They had food, water, even a projector and TV. If not for the locked door, it would have been a dream.

"Sir Zack!" one of them cried out as Zack entered. "Please, it wasn't our idea! Kane made us do it!"

"Stop whining. If you don't want to stop, I'll just let you both go," Zack said coldly, not sparing the two mutants even a glance.

The threat, oddly enough, had the opposite effect.

"No, no, no! Please don't do that!"

"Yeah, Boss, that's not necessary. Just keep us locked up a little longer. We haven't had such good meals in months!"

Zack paused, turning his head slightly. The absurdity of the situation wasn't lost on him. He was offering freedom, and they were begging to stay locked up. "You two are something else," Zack muttered, shaking his head. He walked toward the lab's test area, dismissing their protests. As he prepared the super serum, he couldn't help but muse aloud.

"If I really am a mutant, these experiments would be redundant. But the results so far... mutants not only handle the super serum, but they thrive with it." It didn't take long for Zack to mix two doses of the glowing blue serum. The lab's mechanical assistants efficiently pushed out the injection cabins he'd prepared earlier.

Zack turned back to the locked room, his voice steady. "All right, tell me about your abilities. Quickly."

One of the mutants, a wiry man with an almost comically guilty expression, stepped forward eagerly. "Leader, my name is Samuel. My ability is... uh... night vision."

Zack stared at him for a moment, waiting for more. When no elaboration came, he sighed. "That's it?"

"Yes, sir," Samuel said sheepishly. "That's it."

Zack rolled his eyes and turned to the other mutant, a stout man shifting nervously. "And you?"

"My name is Hayes, Boss... but everyone calls me Gray," he mumbled. His voice dropped to an embarrassed mutter. "My ability is, uh..."

"Farting," Samuel interjected, unable to hold back. "He stinks up the place."

Gray bristled. "It's not farting, you moron! It's biological gas production! Highly toxic! Way better than your useless night vision!"

Zack rubbed his temples, patience waning. "I don't care if it's gas or toxic clouds. If you so much as think about using that ability in front of me... I promise, you'll regret it."

The chill in Zack's voice froze both mutants in place, beads of sweat forming on their foreheads. "Yes, Leader!" Gray stammered, nodding furiously. "I'll hold it in, I swear!"

"I'll make sure he does," Samuel added quickly. "Even if I have to tape his mouth shut!"

Zack exhaled heavily, muttering under his breath, "These two... where did Kane even find them?" He pointed to the injection cabins. "Get in. Take off your coats first."

The mutants obeyed without hesitation, stripping off their outer layers and climbing into the cabins. As the doors sealed, a light anesthetic gas filled the chambers, lulling them into unconsciousness. "Ego, begin data recording," Zack commanded, his focus shifting to the holographic display.

"Data is being logged," Ego confirmed. Despite their absurd abilities, Samuel and Gray had physical attributes far surpassing ordinary humans, a testament to their mutant physiology. On average, their overall stats were 2.5 times that of a normal person.

"Proceed with the injection," Zack ordered.

The mechanical arms within the injection cabins began their work, precisely administering the glowing serum into the mutants' bodies. "Serum injected. No immediate rejection detected," Ego reported. "Beginning ray stimulation."

The cabins lit up with a bright, pulsating glow as the serum activated. The display tracked their stats as they climbed rapidly. "Strength index increasing... Three times baseline... Four times... Five times..."

By the time the rays dimmed, their stats had plateaued at 7.1 times the average human—a nearly threefold increase from their starting point. "Any side effects?" Zack asked.

"No abnormalities detected," Ego responded.

"What about their abilities?"

"Brain activity scans show no changes. Their mutant abilities remain unaffected." Zack nodded, unsurprised. His own experience had led him to suspect as much, but it was still gratifying to see it confirmed.

"Wake them up," Zack instructed.

A moderate electric current coursed through the injection cabins, jolting Samuel and Gray back to consciousness. The hatches hissed open, revealing two hulking figures, their muscles bulging under their skin. Yet despite their newfound physiques, their familiar, foolish expressions remained unchanged. "Whoa... what is this feeling?" Samuel blinked, staring down at his powerful arms as if they didn't belong to him.

Clink. Gray, still dazed, reached out and accidentally dented the metal frame of the injection cabin with his fingertips. "Holy crap, Gray! Look at you!" Samuel exclaimed, wide-eyed. "You're like... a walking tank!"

"Me? Look at yourself!" Gray fired back, equally stunned. "You look like you could tear down a building with one hand!"
