Chapter 27: First Boss
The roar still echoed as Viktor surged forward, his blade already drawn, feet gliding across the polished stone tiles. The massive orc didn’t wait. With speed surprising for its size, it leapt down the throne of bones and charged, each step thunderous, shaking the ground.
Viktor met the orc in the center of the chamber, steel colliding with jagged iron. The clash unleashed a shockwave that sent a gust of air rushing past Ares and the others.
"Stay behind!" Viktor screamed as he clashed with the monster—but within seconds, it was clear the plan wouldn’t hold.
The orc was stronger than any monster they’d faced. Faster, perhaps even more intelligent. Every swing of its cleaver came with monstrous force, each movement deliberate. It wasn’t blindly raging—it was fighting.
Viktor ducked beneath a sweeping horizontal strike, rolling and slashing upward. His blade scraped along the creature’s side, sparks flying from its makeshift armour. But the orc barely flinched. Instead, it lifted a knee, catching Viktor in the chest and launching him backwards like a ragdoll.
He crashed into a column with a dull crunch and slumped to the floor.
"Sir!" Selene gasped, instinctively raising her rapier. Lucian’s staff was already in his hands, the crystal on top of it pulsing with light.
But Ares had seen enough.
Without a word, he dashed into the fray.
"Ares—!" Selene called, but he didn’t stop. His mana was still recovering, his core barely half full. But even in that state, his instincts burned. He had to move.
The orc turned just as Ares arrived, raising its cleaver in a brutal overhead arc. Ares slid low, under the swing, the blade missing his head by inches as it shattered stone behind him. He came up inside the creature’s guard, fist glowing with condensed mana, and drove it into the orc’s gut.
The impact cracked the air like thunder, but it was like punching a boulder wrapped in iron.
The orc didn’t stagger.
Then it backhanded Ares with such force that his feet left the ground. He hit the stone floor hard and rolled several meters before stopping. Pain exploded along his ribs.
Still, he pushed through the pain.
He wiped blood from his mouth and narrowed his eyes. "No way that thing is a category E Boss."
From the rear, Lucian began chanting—particles of light formed in the air, gathering pale light at the top of his staff.
With a groan, he launched a wave of wind toward the orc’s leg.
The spell struck true, wrapping around the creature’s limbs and halting its movement for a second, just long enough for the instructor to return to his senses.
The beast roared and tore its cleave through the air.
Ares was already moving, evading the strike with ease.
This time, he didn’t charge blindly. He darted in from the side, ducking behind the orc’s cleaver arm as it moved to swat at Lucian. His blade—one of the Soul Weapons he’d claimed—hummed with power. He slashed across the back of the orc’s knee, slicing through leather and muscle. The creature bellowed in pain, staggering.
This time, he didn’t simply charge blindly. He reached for the new Soul Weapon, then to its enchantment. He could feel it within his grasp. He activated it without delay, and a sudden surge of strength pulsed through his body. His movements faster, his body oozing with strength.
Viktor was back on his feet now, bloodied but breathing steadily.
"Ares!" he called. "Keep its attention—don’t let it swing freely!"
Ares didn’t answer. He was already there, dancing around the orc’s strikes. The cleaver came crashing down again and again, each swing faster, more vicious, but Ares was quicker. He weaved, spun, and struck—death in motion.
The weight of his strikes was now far more significant than before. The enchantment worked wonders. Each of his swings tore through the monster’s thick skin.
Viktor joined him, now flanking the beast. Together, they pressed in.
Lucian launched his wind attacks, slowing the creature’s movements, while Ares and Viktor continued to navigate through the creature’s attacks and strike when possible.
Still, the orc fought like a demon. It knocked Viktor back again, then it nearly crushed Ares with a stomp, its movements still menacingly fast despite Lucian’s spells.
Then something changed.
The orc’s muscles bulged, veins darkening beneath its skin. A red glow burst from its eyes. With a roar far louder than before, it slammed the cleaver into the floor. A shockwave of corrupted mana exploded outward. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm
Ares barely had time to react. He braced, throwing up his sword to block the impact, but the force sent him skidding back. Selene cried out and fell. Lucian staggered, dropping to his knees.
Viktor gritted his teeth. "It’s going berserk!"
Ares didn’t waste time responding. He stepped forward again. He dismissed Father’s Will and instead, he summoned the two daggers.
Waves of water swirled around the blades as he dashed forward, sending cuts across the orc’s chest. Each strike, followed by a crushing wave
Viktor followed, this time with a flurry of slashes that forced the orc to stumble. It raised its cleaver in both hands—too slow.
That was the moment Ares had waited for.
He dashed up the orc’s leg, leaping from its thigh to its shoulder. His daggers swung down—clean and precise—sinking into the side of the monster’s neck.
The orc roared, reached up to grab him, but Viktor struck from below with a blinding burst of mana, stabbing deep into its chest.
The creature swayed.
Then, with a final breath, it crumpled to its knees, the cleaver falling from its hand with a resonant clang. It collapsed fully with a ground-shaking thud.
The chamber fell silent.
Smoke rose from the orc’s wounds. Blood pooled beneath its body.
Viktor, panting, dropped to one knee, his eyes never leaving the monster.
Selene picked herself up and ran over. Lucian followed, stunned but smiling faintly.
Ares stood beside the corpse, his daggers dripping with a vile liquid.
But before he could enjoy a moment of peace, something unexpected happened. A familiar line of text appeared above the monster’s body.
