Rise of The Demon General-Chapter 460. Confrontation at the City Gate
Chapter 460: Chapter 460. Confrontation at the City Gate
Amon advanced with his ceremonial dagger in his hand. The soldiers further away saw the exchange. They immediately sounded the alarm. Soon, everyone in the city was alerted to the assault on the gate.
Nearby city guards rushed over, but many citizens came out of nearby alleys. They joined the mobs parading through the streets. This mob fought the city guards near the gate and prevented other guards from approaching.
Below the battlement where Amon and the others were was a room with the winch. The room was directly above the gate. The winch controlled the portcullis that blocked the gate. Only after the portcullis was raised could the gate be opened.
After defeating the squad that guarded this part of the battlement, Amon entered an opening that led to the room with the winch. Two city guards were inside that room. They waited under the stairs to ambush Amon, but Amon had known their presence before he went down the stairs.
Amon’s alpha flying knives flew down before he did and assailed the two guards. The two guards were surprised by these four flying knives. When they were busy with the flying knives, Amon struck their backs.
With the two guards down, nothing obstructed them from the winch except for the enchantment locking the winch. Glowing words of power were engraved on the winch. Those words of power made it so only authorized people could unlock the winch.
"You are up!" Amon told Yi Chaisan, who came down the stairs with him.
"On it!" Yi Chaisan replied. She jumped and landed before the winch. She got to work immediately.
"Wuming, Li, stay in this room and protect her," Amon ordered. "Wu Di, we stand guard above the stairs."
Wu Di nodded. He and Amon rushed back out and stood beside the opening. Around them were the people of the six clans. These people formed a wall that prevented anyone from coming near.
Currently, everything was going their way, but Amon knew this wouldn’t last long. He could see many city guards coming their way. From the direction of the city hall, a concerning group of people approached. At the head of this group was Fuxiang City’s mayor, Pan Xisheng.
Some city guards who arrived earlier were already clashing with the six clans. Pan Xisheng gave them a signal, and they retreated. The fight ended temporarily.
Pan Xisheng came forward and addressed the people of the six clans, "Lo Bie! Yun Binling! What is the meaning of this?!"
Two people flew out of the mob surrounding the city gate. These two were the clan masters of the Lo and Yun clans.
"Master Lo Bie, Master Yun Binling, we have been wondering where you were when the mayor called for an emergency meeting," one of the men accompanying the mayor said.
"Uncle, this must have something to do with Yi Chaisan and her people," Gu Weixing spoke to the man, whose name was Gu Xiguan. He was Gu Clan’s clan head.
"Is that true? Did you two betray the mayor?" Gu Xiguan asked Lo Bie and Yun Binling.
Lo Bie chuckled. He said, "Betray? You know that expression, the pot calling the kettle black? That perfectly described your accusation just now."
While they spoke, a few people beside Pan Xisheng noticed familiar faces in the mob.
One of them called out, "Bing Heng? Bing Lung? What are you doing here with our clan members? Hurry up and disperse!"
"We can’t do that, Clan Head Bing Ma," Bing Heng replied. "We have agreed that you are no longer fit to be our clan head. Your decision brings great risk to our clan. From now on, you are no longer our clan head. We object to this uprising and will help the kingdom restore control of this city!"
"You...!"
The clan head of the Bun Clan experienced the same thing. His clan members gathering around the city gate denounced him when he commanded them to come to his side.
As for the Som and Min clans, they had acted before they came here. They ambushed their clan heads when they were about to head to the city hall after receiving the mayor’s emergency call.
"I guess this proved the truth to Gu Weixing and Yon Fong’s report. There truly are kingdom agents operating within this city," a clan head named Wo Bin remarked.
"I sent my clan members to ambush the meeting set up by these agents, but they didn’t find anyone at the meeting place," Yon Fong said. "I also lose contact with my clan members who met directly with these agents."
"You should have come to me the second your people were contacted by these agents," Pan Xisheng uttered.
"I apologize. I didn’t want to bother Your Honor in case these agents turn out to be false. I tried to make sure before reporting," Yon Fong defended herself.
"Hmph! Where are your clan members? From what I saw, six clans riot against us, so four are still loyal."
"My clan members are on their way here, Your Honor," Yon Fong answered.
"So are mine," Wo Bin said. "I have sent someone to rally everyone in my clan."
Pan Xisheng looked behind him. The soldiers from the city hall were coming over. From all directions, the city guards were converging on this place. He looked back at the front. Judging from the six clans’ position, they were protecting the city gate. It was clear what these people tried to do.
"We must get to the room that housed the gate’s winch," Pan Xisheng said. "They must currently try to operate the winch that opens the city gate."
He moved forward and addressed his former allies, "Lo Bie, Yun Binling! If you don’t stand aside, don’t blame me for being cruel."
"Stop acting like you are doing us a favor," Yun Binling replied.
"Wang Xisheng, I know you care not for this city!" Lo Bie exclaimed. "You, rebels, have no trouble harming civilians as long as you can hurt the kingdom. You should have kept us civilians out of your vendetta, but you didn’t, so we have no choice but to fight you!"
"If that is your decision, so be it," Pan Xisheng uttered. He waved his hand and signaled his people. "Attack...!!!"
The city guards and the soldiers from the city hall charged forward. The clan heads supporting the mayor joined the attack. The six clans had prepared. They brought all their resources for this confrontation. They used talismans and sent the few battle puppets they possessed to block the enemy vanguards. A chaotic battle ensued.
Amon and Wu Di watched from the battlement above the city gate.
"Do you think our allies can win?" Wu Di asked.
"No," Amon replied. "Though our number appears the same as the enemy now, the enemy has more high-level cultivators. Soon, the enemies’ reinforcement will arrive. We will lose even in number."
"Can we do something?" Wu Di asked.
"Our job is to prevent anyone from entering that room," Amon pointed at the stairs going down to the room with the winch. "All we can do now is buy Yi Chaisan time. Hopefully, she doesn’t disappoint..."
*
Inside the room, Yi Chaisan was busy unraveling the locking enchantment. She heard the commotion outside and knew the battle had started. From the sound of it, the battle involved quite a lot of people.
She pulled her thoughts away from the battle outside. She needed to concentrate. She knew those people outside were risking their lives to buy her time. She couldn’t let them down. Yet, there was another thing that distracted her aside from the battle sounds. His thigh hurt like hell.
She had applied recovery salve, but it seemed the wound caused by Gu Weixing was more severe than she thought. She had no time to deal with it, though. She could have it looked at once this mission was over. For now, she just had to suck it up.
"Is it still long?" Xin Wuming asked Yi Chaisan.
"Hey, stop distracting her," Yang Li reprimanded.
"Sorry," Xin Wuming said. He returned his attention to the stairs. He was nervous. He never liked such a waiting situation. He wished there was something he could do.
His wish was soon granted.
"Wuming, Li, get ready! Someone is heading down!" They heard Amon’s urgent voice from above.
A man ran down the stairs. He wore the uniform of a city guard. He carried a spear. He turned to where the winch was once he entered. Ignoring Xin Wuming and Yang Li, he lunged at Yi Chaisan, who was next to the winch.
Xin Wuming put himself between the man and Yi Chaisan. He had Iron Skin on when he used his body to receive a spear stab from the man. While he tanked the attack, Yang Li came behind the man. Her two hands dexterously grabbed the man’s head and swiftly snapped his neck.
Before the man’s body even dropped to the floor, Amon’s voice was heard again.
"More are going down there!"
