Chapter 214 -212: The Great Fire (3rd Update)

Aixin naturally heard the thunderous sound and the noise of the city walls collapsing as well.

This sound jolted her out of her frenzied state!

“Little girl, keep talking about workers’ compensation, I’m dying of thirst like a clam out of water, wait for me to take a drink!”

Ling Long from Black Wind Village resurrected Chen Meng with the Resurrection Technique, and he continued to pester Aixin about matters concerning social insurance and housing provident fund, feeling himself to be the most outstanding insurance salesman among all the bandits.

But Aixin was in no mood to continue listening to Chen Meng’s prattle, as her health had dropped below twenty thousand, a severely wounded status.

She broke free from the encirclement of the other members of Black Wind Village and ran towards the breach in the distant, damaged city wall.

A large number of sacred spirits had already poured into the interior of the city walls, and when Aixin ran back to the small town she had lived in before… the place she regarded as home… flames had already spread across the entire town.

Dense black smoke rose from buildings in the distance, and Aixin could hear the panicked cries of her compatriots all around the town.

This made Aixin grip her longsword tighter, a wave of anger and killing intent nearly uncontrollable rising within her, along with a deep sense of helplessness and pain.

As a Crystal Disease Infected, Aixin had seen too many similar scenes, but this time she had the ability to protect her compatriots, and she had to protect them.

She didn’t engage in battle with the invading sacred spirits but rather hurried towards the entrance to the second layer of the ruins.

Because Denghis Xisi was already guiding civilians to take refuge in the second layer of the ruins, but the space in the second layer was too small to accommodate all the civilians.

When Aixin reached the entrance to the second layer, dozens of civilians were still outside the ruins on the second layer.

Where is the mentor?

Aixin bypassed those Magic Thief civilians and began to search for her mentor, entering the second layer of the ruins… the area Denghis Xisi had named the Magic Research Area.

This area was already filled to capacity, with more than two thousand civilians crammed into a small space… Aixin found him in another building… in the place where Denghis Xisi’s study was located.

“Mentor! The sacred spirits have broken in!” Aixin said anxiously.

“I know.”

Denghis Xisi stood in front of a wooden table covered with a map of Biland Island, appearing to contemplate something.

“Don’t worry, they will absolutely not be able to breach the protections of the second layer of the ruins. As long as we are here, we are absolutely safe.”

“But there are still civilians on the third layer!” Aixin pointed outside the door, saying “Those cruel sacred spirits will kill everyone!”

“Aixin… my child, we have no way to save everyone,” Denghis Xisi said in a somber tone to Aixin. “We must prepare for a war of attrition with those sacred spirits, the supplies and space in the second layer can’t accommodate too many people.”

Can’t we drive them back? Aixin didn’t voice this question because Denghis Xisi made a decision that stunned her.

“Aixin, you should join those sacred spirits,” Denghis Xisi said.

“Join… those sacred spirits? Do you mean for me to spy among them?”

Aixin’s intelligence was still recovering after having undergone Blood Frenzy, but even with intelligence as low as nine, she could guess that Denghis Xisi was probably planning for her to play the role of a spy.

“A spy, you’re not suited for that profession, and to become a companion of the sacred spirits is not so simple… to just obey them. First, the Devouring God will turn you into her servant; your memories, your personality, your preferences, even what we are discussing now, the Devouring God will know all of it.” Denghis Xisi said.

“Then mentor… if those sacred spirits capture me, won’t that mean all our secrets are exposed?”

Listening to Denghis Xisi’s description gave Aixin a chilling sensation—everything about her being known to a god was more terrifying than anything else.

It made her recall again the schemes of Chen Meng trying to bewitch her… it was more horrifying than the temptations of a demon.

“I hope you will do as I say, don’t ask why,” Denghis Xisi’s round-framed glasses reflected Aixin’s somewhat hesitant expression.

“Will the sacred spirits truly accept my defection?”

As Aixin asked this question, echoes of Chen Meng’s droning filled her head, and she truly regretted having asked him what social insurance and housing provident fund were.

“Yes, sacred spirits think differently from us—they don’t see you as an enemy but as a potential recruit. You could become an important pawn for the Devouring God,” Denghis Xisi mused and then added, “And if you really were recruited by the sacred spirits, you would live a better life than you do here.”

“No! Mentor… I don’t trust those… thugs, demons… to treat us well.”

“Would you be willing to join them for me?” Denghis Xisi interrupted Aixin.

“If that is your command, Mentor.”

With gritted teeth, Aixin made up her mind. She didn’t know what Denghis Xisi was planning, but she believed he must be doing it for the better future of her kin.

Having made her decision, Aixin turned and walked out of Denghis Xisi’s study. She hurried from the second floor to the third.

The area where the commoners lived was still ablaze with fire… Aixin found it very hard to suppress the rage in her heart as she looked at the scene.

Go join a group that burnt down her home and captured her family to be slaves? What a joke!

But she had to do it!

Clenching her Longsword firmly, Aixin walked through the streets consumed by flames, searching for the figures of the sacred spirits, and soon she saw a group of them appear at the end of the street.

At that moment, Aixin almost drew her sword to cut them down, but she held back… Just as she was about to step forward to communicate with the sacred spirits, one of them charged directly into the flaming building.

“There are life signs under this building! People under the debris! Is there anyone with ice or water abilities?”

“Our powers are too strong; they’d blow the building apart! Just use hands to move it! It doesn’t hurt to get scorched by a fire anyway!”

“Right!”

Aixin watched as that sacred spirit grabbed the flaming wooden planks with bare hands, forcefully turned them over, and then started scrabbling at the stone rubble on the ground to pull out a little girl who was pinned underneath the planks.

“There are people trapped under this building too! I can’t move this damn wall!”

“Can’t move a damn wall? What the hell have you been eating?”

“I’m a damn Elemental Master!”

“Move aside, blockhead, I’ll do the work!”

With a population of three thousand two hundred people in the town, there were at least fifty trapped under these buildings. But the sacred spirits, as if they knew exactly where people were, rushed into the burning buildings to search for survivors.

Aixin watched as a player in a strange pixelated head and a snowman outfit broke a collapsed wall with one hand… Two little boys were trapped underneath.

Be careful! While Aixin was observing from the sidelines, she noticed that building suddenly collapsing, but in the nick of time, the sacred spirit grabbed the two unconscious boys and threw them out of the debris, only to be buried underneath themself.

“Darn it! Lord McCoffee has died yet again!”

“Still have half health left, not dead! What are you yelling for? Hurry up and rescue!”

“You blockheads just want to see me die, don’t you?” The pixel-headed player popped out of the rubble like a turnip.

Aixin couldn’t help but laugh at the scene… but soon, she noticed the sacred spirits’ main forces approaching the area, and she hid in the shadows once again.

However, as the sacred spirits from the guild got closer, she heard a familiar call.

“Black Wind Village is recruiting at the front line! Brothers buried in debris! We offer a daily wage of three gold, full benefits, and housing! There’s a life signal under that building! Second in command, come save people quick!”

“On my way!”

Listening to the shouting that rose and fell throughout the burning town, Aixin swiftly climbed atop a still-intact building, getting an unobstructed view of the whole town.

The sacred spirits were still rampaging through the streets violently, but this time, not to battle the Magic Thieves, but to put out the fires across the town and rescue the residents trapped underneath in the burning buildings.

To Aixin, what made it feel somewhat surreal was… even in such a situation, these sacred spirits still fought with each other nonstop.
