Chapter 152 -152 Renting a House

Gu Pan looked down from the stairwell window, it was indeed quite nice.

This building was similar to an apartment building, with a long corridor in the middle and rooms on both sides, saving space and construction materials.

But the downside was the lack of north-south ventilation, though in the apocalypse, these were minor issues.

On the fourth floor, Chen Lu found the keys, went to the southernmost room on the east side, and opened the door, “The east side is more popular than the west, go in and take a look.”

Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng followed her into the room, which had a simple layout: an entryway upon entering, the kitchen to the left, the bathroom to the right, and two bedroom doors straight ahead.

The bedroom doors were open, and Gu Pan walked in.

Both rooms faced south and received good sunlight. The windows weren’t large, which was normal, as glass production had ceased and whatever was installed was likely reclaimed from other buildings and modified to be smaller than before—not larger.

The bedrooms were quite empty, with just one bed and a wardrobe, nothing more.

Lu Ruisheng looked out the window and asked Gu Pan, “What do you think?”

Gu Pan surveyed the surroundings and, truth be told, it was really quite satisfactory, so she nodded and said, “I think it’s fine.” As for the bathroom and kitchen, she didn’t care much, because the description stated that they were all the same; looking or not wouldn’t change anything.

Still, Chen Lu said, “Let me show you the kitchen and bathroom.”

Gu Pan followed politely, finding a clay stove in the kitchen.

Chen Lu said, “The base has restricted electricity, available only from six to eight in the evening. Cooking is done with coal, which you can buy at the mall.”

Afterwards, she added, “Water is also available from six to eight in the evening, so you must remember to store water. You don’t have a bucket, do you? Go to the mall later and buy one; it’s a necessity for living in the base.”

Gu Pan nodded, “Alright, I’ll remember that.”

Chen Lu then showed her the bathroom, which was very small, with just a washbasin and a squat toilet.

“You have to go to the public bath to shower, which also requires exchanging contribution points,” Chen Lu explained.

Considering the base was newly built and lacking in energy and materials, Gu Pan thought the arrangement was quite good and nodded in response to Chen Lu.

Chen Lu asked, “Do you want to look at another one?”

Gu Pan felt this place matched what she had in mind, and since the extreme heat had passed, there wouldn’t be hotter times ahead. A south-facing room was suitable, and she could even grow some plants indoors.

Everything was within her expectations; she was truly satisfied, so there was no need to waste time looking further—floor, orientation, location were all to her liking.

So she said, “No need to look further; I’ll take this one. I really like it. How much is the rent… I mean, how many points?” She hadn’t yet adjusted to the new currency system.

Chen Lu was surprised by Gu Pan’s decisiveness and quickly said, “One hundred and fifty contribution points per year, this is the most expensive one here. I thought you had high standards, so I directly showed you the best one.”

She spoke earnestly because that was exactly what she had thought.

Gu Pan preferred dealing with straightforward people, so she responded, “That’s great. Focusing directly on the goal, no time wasted. Where do I sign the contract?”

Chen Lu took out a contract from her bag, “Just sign here; you don’t have to pay for a whole year, paying every three months will do. It’s 37.5 points for three months, rounded up that’s 38 points, plus a 5-point deposit, which makes it 43 points.”

Gu Pan handed over five ten-point Contribution Point Cards to Chen Lu.

After Chen Lu wrote up the contract, she gave them 7 points as change and quickly signed the agreement with them.

Gu Pan took out two lollipops and gave them to Chen Lu, “Thank you, Xiao Chen.”

Because the other party had indeed saved her a lot of time and had shared many useful things, she felt that this girl was quite nice and spoke sincerely.

Chen Lu was a little embarrassed, “This is part of my job; it’s not right to accept gifts.”

Hearing the word ‘gift,’ Gu Pan realized that, at this time, lollipops were considered precious supplies. Sugar is an essential part of the human diet, and now the base treated sugar blocks not as snacks but as necessities.

Gu Pan placed the candy into Chen Lu’s hands, smiling, “Please take it. I’m really satisfied with this apartment, and in the future, if we have any more needs, we’ll still need to trouble you. We’re new here and still unfamiliar with the area, so we’ll be asking you a lot.”

She wanted to live in a villa in the future. Having just arrived, it wasn’t good to be too showy. She would wait until she was more familiar with the area and then slowly make the switch. By then, she would indeed need to find this girl who was very helpful and didn’t hold back any information.

Chen Lu accepted the lollipops, clearly very happy, “If you have any questions about the house or run into any issues with the utilities, come find me right away. Even if it’s not about the house, you can still come to me.”

Gu Pan responded, “Yeah, if I need to, I definitely won’t be shy about asking you.”

Chen Lu smiled and agreed, then checked the time, “Well, I won’t keep you from settling in. Just park your car downstairs. If you don’t need it, sell it quickly at the market or trade it for something else. There’re different exchange points there.”

Few people chose the identity of a Scavenger once they arrived at the base, so most would sell their cars. Otherwise, they’d need to keep them maintained, and fuel was very expensive, not something everyone could afford. So, once a car reached the base, it generally became useless.

Gu Pan agreed, “Alright, we were just about to go down to pick up some items. Let’s go together.”

Chen Lu walked ahead with Gu Pan, and once they were outside, Gu Pan asked casually, “Are villas available for rent in that area too?”

Having received the candy, Chen Lu was even more forthcoming, “Yes, villas are available for rent there too, but the price is very high. It’s over eight hundred points for a year, and you also need approval from higher-ups. It’s quite complicated.”

“What items have high contribution point values?” Gu Pan asked next.

Chen Lu didn’t think much of it, assuming Gu Pan was just curious, so she replied, “Weapons, equipment, machinery…” As she spoke, something suddenly occurred to her, “Oh right, energy sources, like mineral deposits and oil that can be turned into energy. I’ve heard those are valuable, but they’re hard to find and difficult to transport back. So far, I’ve not heard of any individual managing to do it.”

Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng took mental note; this was something they could search for. Once they found it, they could directly place it into Space, and when they were near the base, they could pretend to have transported it back by vehicle.

Their initial plan was to wait for the acid rain to stop and then look for a cruise ship in Binhai City, scavenging for precious materials along the way, including those mentioned by Chen Lu. But then, they remembered the acid rain would corrode the ships, so they planned to go to Binhai City as soon as they were settled in the base.

Using ordinary transportation, they would definitely not have enough time, but they had a helicopter. Before, they thought it was a waste of fuel and also planned to gather supplies on the way to Binhai City, to take care of more things in one trip. However, there was no more time. Some things, even with the Golden Finger, weren’t thoroughly considered; no plan survives first contact with reality.

Fortunately, they had a helicopter. Lu Ruisheng had calculated the time; a round trip for the two of them would take just two days since the helicopter provided direct access without the many unknowns of land travel.

Anyway, once everything was settled, going out to find minerals, oil, and supplies were all within their capabilities, so there was no rush.

Gu Pan thanked Chen Lu, “Thank you for telling me so much.”

Chen Lu replied, “You’re welcome. I’m heading back now. Since you’ve just moved in, you’re bound to be missing some daily necessities. You can buy what you need at the department store across the street.”
