Chapter 156: Chapter 156 Finding a Job

Chapter 156 -156 Finding a Job

Last night, the couple had a good sleep, a rare feeling of stability in the post-apocalypse.

The next day, they woke up quite late, not until after nine o’clock. After breakfast, they went together to the employment center since, given that the role of a Scavenger was so clearly defined, they had to inquire if there were any requirements or procedures needed for the job.

Upon reaching the employment center, they discovered it was crowded with people looking to change jobs or those who had been doing odd jobs and now wanted permanent positions.

Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng took a queue number and sat on the bench waiting; it took a half hour before they were called over.

The staffer was very busy and, without even looking up, asked, “Here to find a job or to change jobs?”

Lu Ruisheng said, “We’re new here, and we’d like to know about the requirements and procedures for becoming a free Scavenger.

Hearing Lu Ruisheng’s request to become a Scavenger surprised the staff member, who looked up to scrutinize him, “Are you sure you want to be a Scavenger?”

He was a man in his mid-twenties, with a small head full of big doubts. To his mind, he had cracked his head getting into the base, and now anyone wanting to leave the base would have to fight him over it. Who, having managed to get in, would ever want to leave?

Outside, he had been so hungry that his head was bigger than his neck, and if his Second Uncle hadn’t found him and brought him here, he probably would have died. So, he couldn’t understand those who wanted to leave the base he was in.

He had been working here for a month, and this was only the second person he’d seen choose this job. The first was a middle-aged man, the quiet type who said nothing. He didn’t quite understand that man’s odd demeanor, but since the man had been sturdy and a bit of a loner, he guessed maybe he chose it because he didn’t like to interact with others. That man’s peculiar choice, therefore, made this new peculiar choice seem less so.

But these two people looked so serious, so why choose something so strange?

Lu Ruisheng nodded resolutely at the staff member, “We appreciate freedom.”

Originally, the staff member was surprised by their choice of work, but when he took a good look at the two, his heart sank again. Weren’t these the individuals Miss Song had told him to give a hard time to? Although he didn’t know their names, their physical characteristics matched what she told him, and people in that sort of condition were rare in the base.

Song Xiner wanted him to make things difficult for them, not to give them good work, to make them dig latrines or do janitorial work. Although he did not want to do these things, he had no choice. If he lost his job, it would not only burden his uncle, but it could even cause trouble for him. He couldn’t be ungrateful.

In any case, he had already planned to start by giving them the less desirable jobs, and once Song Xiner had forgotten about them, he would help them switch.

But now, they didn’t want work at all; they had directly chosen to be Scavengers, so he didn’t need to be the bad guy.

However, another thought struck him: could they have been threatened by Song Xiner? Looking at Gu Pan, he asked again, “You two both chose the Scavenger profession?”

Without hesitation, Gu Pan nodded, “Yes, we are a married couple, so naturally we made the same choice.”

The staff member thought for a while longer before asking once more, “Are you sure?”

Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng were becoming speechless; wasn’t the job there for people to choose from? Why was it so strange to pick a profession?

Finally, after several confirmations, the staff member stood up, rummaged through a cabinet for seldom-used forms, and handed them one each.

After that, he said, “First, fill out these forms. After I stamp them, you’ll go to the card-making area to get a card made. It’s a real-name system card needed for entering and exiting the base. The first one is free, but if you lose it, a replacement costs thirty contribution points, so make sure to keep it safe. With the card, you can retrieve the weapons you deposited upon entering.”

Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng understood. Their weapons were in the Space, so they weren’t concerned about that, but it was essential to keep the card safe as it was needed for entry and exit, and replacing it was costly.

After filling out the forms, they handed them back to the staff member.

Taking the forms, the staff member looked at the couple, /wanted to say something but held back, yet seemed eager to speak.

This made the straightforward Gu Pan anxious, and she asked, “Is there any problem?”

After a long silence, the staff member said, “Are you really volunteering to be Scavengers?”

The question puzzled Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng. Perplexed, Gu Pan asked, “Why do you say that?”

The staff member’s expression grew even more conflicted.

Lu Ruisheng, who was usually not an impatient man, was also becoming annoyed by the staffer’s behavior: “If there’s something to say, just say it. You’re really making us anxious.”

The staffer furrowed his brow, engaged in an internal struggle, questioning whether to speak or not.

Suddenly, Gu Pan thought of something and was about to mention it to Lu Ruisheng when he, too, remembered. They turned to each other and said in unison, “The one named Song.”

This seemed to resolve the staff member’s hesitation, and he looked at them inquiringly, “You know?”

Gu Pan asked the staffer, “Someone asked you to give us a hard time, right?”

The staffer didn’t deny it, “I haven’t said anything. I’m just reminding you not to act on a whim. Going outside the base is really dangerous. It’s better to manage with flexible work inside the base for now and look for a job change when the opportunity arises. That’s being responsible for you.”

Gu Pan also realized that the staffer had been threatened but wasn’t inherently bad, which explained his constant reminders and his earlier silences, as he was struggling with what to say.

So, she assured the staff member, “We really did make this choice on our own. Please proceed with the formalities.”

The staff member had no choice but to stamp their forms and sent them to the inside card-making area.

The couple went to a card-making office, passed their documents through the window, and the staff member told them to return in two hours.

With such a long wait, they couldn’t simply stay there and so decided to look around the nearby areas, first locating the exact positions of the police station and hospital—different from what they had seen from their window.

Observing the police’s attire, it seemed different from before, likely made within the base; it somewhat resembled the uniforms of the eighties and nineties.

The hospital appeared similar to modern ones, but they wondered about the equipment inside. It was large, which was reassuring. It was the kind of place nobody hoped to use, but its absence would be worrisome.

Further in, there was nothing much else; this place had no need for tax offices since everything was managed by the base.

Nor did it provide shelter for vagrants; there were no orphanages or nursing homes needed.

The school wasn’t on this side but was said to be located on an open space to the east; they planned to stroll there when time allowed.

Then they moved on to the commercial area, where they discovered a fresh market next to a department store, which they hadn’t noticed before. Alongside the barber shop and bathhouse they had seen yesterday, there were also a photo studio, a tailor shop, and a home appliance repair service.

As they walked, they overheard some news: the Food Factory was in the western district, not only producing biscuits but also researching more satiating foods and those that could replenish the body’s needs.

Of course, these had not yet been developed, but it was one of the base’s most critical research projects.
