Chapter 30: CH 030: A distraction (Mass release 1)
The group stood in stunned silence as they watched the beasts slowly advance. The road to TT Junction, the only path that could get them where they needed to go, was blocked by this monstrous army. With no other options and no way around the creatures, it was clear that they had only one choice.
Gunther stepped forward, his jaw set with determination. He knew the gravity of the situation, and the pressure weighed heavy on him as the group awaited his orders. "We have to fight!" His voice was firm, cutting through the tension like a knife. There was no room for hesitation. "But everyone has to move fast, we can’t take them all on. Our goal is to clear a path. We need to get them off the road so we can pass."
The weight of his words settled on everyone, and for a brief moment, there was only the sound of the wind rustling through the trees. But then, the group snapped into action. freewebnσvel.cøm
"Eight of you should go left and draw their attention that way," Gunther commanded, pointing towards the dense tree line where a few of the beasts loitered. The eight he had chosen quickly unsheathed their weapons, their hands steady despite the fear in their eyes. They moved in sync, darting towards the left, preparing to engage the beasts in a way that would divert them from the group’s path.
Among the eight, Simbi was one of the first to move. Her eyes were steely with resolve, her weapon in hand, ready to do whatever it took. The others followed close behind her, the crunch of leaves beneath their feet masking the tension in the air. Only Gunther, Chris, Dave, Tasha, Ella, and three others remained by the truck, eyes fixed on the looming threat.
From a distance, they watched as the group of eight threw stones and shouted, trying to provoke the beasts into attacking. The sounds of impact and raised voices echoed through the air, but to their dismay, the beasts didn’t react. They simply lumbered forward, their slow and deliberate pace unaffected by the commotion.
Simbi, still among the group trying to draw the beasts’ attention, furrowed her brow in confusion. "What’s wrong?" Her voice was a mixture of frustration and disbelief as she turned to the others. "Are those beasts even trying to attack us?"
The question hung in the air, unanswered. The beasts continued their slow, methodical advance, their eyes glowing faintly, but they showed no sign of aggression, at least not towards Simbi’s group. They were moving so slowly, a characteristics based on the type of beast they are. Tortoise-like beast, who walks very slow.
Simbi’s group stood at their position, weapons in their hands, but the beasts didn’t even flinch. It was a standoff, an eerie silence stretching between the two sides. The air was thick with tension, each person trying to make sense of the bizarre situation.
Gunther stood motionless, his gaze fixed on the group of beasts as they ambled forward, seemingly unfazed by the distractions the others were attempting to throw at them. His brow furrowed deeper with each passing second.
"What’s wrong with them?" he muttered under his breath, his frustration building. "They aren’t even budging. They’re not reacting to the noise or the stones. And why isn’t Simbi’s group doing anything?"
Chris, standing a few paces away from him, was quick to offer his assessment. He had been watching the scene unfold with a sharp eye, trying to make sense of the beasts’ strange behavior.
"They’re doing everything they can to get their attention. It’s just the beasts that aren’t moving. For some reason, they seem focused either on this direction, or... on us." His voice carried a sense of both confusion and concern, as if he couldn’t quite piece the puzzle together.
Gunther’s expression darkened. "Focused on us?" he echoed, his mind racing.
Before he could come up with any sort of solution, one of the younger members of the group, one of the boys who had been talking behind Dave’s back just earlier, had spoken up.
His tone was casual, though there was a hint of unease in his voice. "Maybe they think the truck’s some kind of beast or something." He paused for a moment, glancing back at his two friends who had been with him when they had spoken ill of Dave at the dining. "That could explain why they’re ignoring us, right? We’re too small in comparison."
Gunther’s eyes snapped to the boy, his mind whirring as he processed the possibility. Could it really be that simple? The truck; larger, louder, and more intimidating than any of them, might have sparked some primal instinct in the beasts, tricking them into thinking it was one of their own kind. It made a certain kind of sense.
But the thought didn’t sit well with him. If that was the case, then they were going to have to work fast. But he couldn’t believe he’ll be abandoning the truck.
"Then I guess we’ll need to move fast," Gunther muttered, his tone sharp and commanding. "Everyone, to the right! We need to get them to focus on us, and we’ll draw them away from the truck."
Without wasting a second, he began to move, his steps crunching through the dirt as he took long, swift strides toward the right side of the road. The others followed his lead, scrambling to stay in formation as they spread out across the terrain. They dashed past trees and bushes, their eyes constantly scanning for any sign that the beasts might finally start reacting to their movements.
The young boy who had spoken earlier followed behind, his face a mixture of uncertainty and determination. His two friends trailed just a few paces behind him, clearly uneasy as they crossed into the wooded area. Each one of them kept their eyes locked on the beasts, hoping that their new tactic would work.
The silence of the moment was unsettling as they rushed deeper into the trees, the growls and low murmurs of the beasts still echoing from behind them.
However, the sudden shift in the beasts’ behavior caught everyone off guard. Without any warning, the creatures, who had been ambling slowly towards the group to the left, suddenly turned in unison, their gaze locking onto Gunther and his team. Their eyes, wild and unblinking, tracked every movement as they began to creep towards them, their jaws snapping in anticipation.
"What the hell?" One of the members shouted in panic, his voice rising in alarm. He spun around to face Gunther, his eyes wide with disbelief. "They’re coming this way!"
Immediately, Gunther and the others turned to look over their shoulders, their gaze following the creatures’ shift. The beasts were unmistakably heading directly for them. The air grew thicker with tension as their heavy footfalls reverberated through the ground.
Chris, his brow furrowed in confusion, was the first to voice his thoughts. "So, they’re targeting us, not the truck," he said, his voice low and laced with uncertainty. "But why? Why didn’t they go after the rest of the group?" His words hung in the air, unanswered, as the creatures could be seen inching nearer to them. This time, they seem to be walking a little faster than how they were before.
At that moment, Ella’s voice had cut through the silence as she answered Chris question, even though it wasn’t directed at her. "You know, maybe they don’t like slim people," she joked, her tone lighthearted, though the tension in the air made her attempt at humor feel oddly misplaced. "Maybe they’re after a fat human. They must be thinking since Gunther is fat, they’ll get a good taste of his meat."
Gunther sighed deeply, shaking his head in exasperation at Ella’s quip. "Seriously, Ella?" he muttered, a half-smile tugging at his lips despite the gravity of the situation.
The teenagers around them burst into laughter, momentarily breaking the tension that had gripped them all. Dave, too, found himself chuckling, albeit a little nervously. He couldn’t help but appreciate Ella’s ability to crack jokes in the middle of all this chaos. Even in the face of danger, she managed to keep things light, somehow lifting the group’s spirits for a brief moment.
But as the laughter faded and the reality of the situation set back in, Dave’s amusement turned to a growing sense of unease. The beasts, with their bloodshot eyes and predatory movements, were drawing closer. And that’s when it hit him.
His eyes flickered to Simbi’s team, still standing at a distance, watching the scene unfold. The beasts had ignored them completely, as if they didn’t even register their presence.
The beasts, were heading towards their direction not because of Gunther, Chris, or Tasha, not even because of Ella or any of the others. They were heading here because of him. And the main reason why they were attacked in the first place was also because of him.
