Chapter 695 -695: Evil Ghost in the House
Although it was not the first time dancing with Shard, Iluna still felt somewhat nervous when they touched. Her colleagues from the church were also at the Fire Worship Festival banquet, so she could only find an area on the outskirts of the bonfire to dance with Shard.
Like Shard, who was not very good at dancing, Iluna’s dance skills were also modest. But they had danced many times before, and at this moment under the moonlight, in front of the forest at the edge of the bonfire, they were happier than those in the bright light of the bonfire.

“Luviya sends her regards,” he said quietly as he danced, revealing that he had confirmed that it was a crazed Phoenix that had sealed the mountain’s summit passage.
The church had already investigated this as well and had sent three Circle Sorcerer teams into the Interstice before Iluna’s arrival at Midshire Fort, finding the general location of the passage at the summit of Interstice Mountain.
“The summit of Sicarl Mountain in the material world is a beautiful lake, but the summit of the Interstice is a terrifying cracked crevice. The church has not yet determined where this dreadful crack at the summit of Interstice Mountain leads, but the deeper it goes, the stronger the power of death becomes, making it reasonable to believe that the Phoenix and the passage are at the bottom of that crack,” he continued.
Iluna also shared the information she had and then accidentally stepped on Shard’s foot.
“It’s okay. What about The Chosen One? Right now, I can only confirm that the candidates for the Chosen by Death are among Priest Augustus, Sister Delphine, and the strange boy from the Raven Club. Luviya has obtained intelligence confirming that the Spiritual Practice Order is a branch of the Ancient Death Church, so Sister Delphine is the most suspect now,” he added.
Iluna carefully controlled her steps, moving to the distant music:
“This time, the church is ahead of you and Luviya. The candidates for the Chosen by Death, by the time I arrived at Midshire Fort, there were at least four in this city.”
“That many?”
Even if the three candidates Shard provided were included, there was still one person whose identity was unknown.
“The church has identified the number but not the candidates. I saw fragments of a Poem Chapter here, which were part of a handkerchief used by the Witch Empress. It described that the true Chosen One will save the city, and one of their talents, besides the special eyes you discovered, involves almost being able to resurrect. This is the first candidate’s talent; it’s uncertain whether the subsequent candidates have similar abilities.”
“I see, then Priest Augustus fits very well, oh, then now Priest Augustus and Sister Delphine are almost equally suspected,” he replied.
Wind rustled through the treetops, making a rustling sound that reminded people it was now deep autumn.
“But we still can’t rule out others,” Iluna whispered, holding Shard, then added:
“Zaras, Xerxes, and Professors from Saint Byrons have also arrived, and they also possess fragments of the Poem Chapter. Although their information about death is not as extensive as that of the Church of the Five Gods, they might also have clues. I’ll tell you after I have accessed those fragments.”
“Alright, that sounds like a good idea. Iluna, when will you have time to go up the mountain with me, to interact with the Divine Statue beneath the Ruined Tower? It’s not easy coming to Midshire Fort; the signposts must be established,” he suggested.
Only Circle Sorcerers possessing the “Spatial” Spirit Rune or any officially Chosen One could use the “Spatial Labyrinth.” However, unlike Shard, who could do so by offering a White Stone Crystal, anyone else could only establish waypoints by interacting with different Divine Statues.
“We’ll see when I have time; I’ve just arrived here and am quite busy,” she hesitated, then looking up at Shard. She was of average height for a woman of her era, and this slight upward glance allowed her to see the three moons above Shard’s head:
“Do you think we, together with the church, will be able to solve the problems this time, just like the Night of the God’s Descent and the Darkness Descends events in Tobesk?”
She was somewhat concerned, being only seventeen years old.
“Don’t worry, everything will definitely be okay,” Shard also gazed at the girl he was dancing with. Even though he was not sure, he nodded firmly:
“May the Sun and Balance be with you, Iluna.”
“May the Moon be with you, Shard.”
Nothing new happened that night in Midshire Fort. Shard and Iluna danced three times before parting. After dancing with the girls, Shard finally had time to play Roder Card.
Captain Lades welcomed Shard warmly. Although there were no bets involved, Shard was introduced to the city’s card players and interesting special cards here. Not until the fireworks started around eleven o’clock did Shard leave the Fire Worship Festival banquet to go home.
Compared to the bustling Midshire Fort tonight, the Royal Capital Tobesk City was much calmer, with residents experiencing an ordinary night.
By the time Shard got home, it was already midnight. Luviya had an appointment in the black market tonight to inquire about a special coin, so she had left early, and the only one to greet Shard was Mia.
Shard placed the sheath and “Night Watchman” that Granny Cassandra had given him together, hanging them in his bedroom. After washing up, he went to bed to rest, planning to visit “Sin Mansion” on Wednesday (tomorrow). If all went well, Luviya might be able to secure the position of The Chosen One this week.
The autumn night in Tobesk was so quiet, and in the dimly lit bedroom on the second floor, both Shard and his cat slept soundly.
The curtains were tightly closed, yet they left a small gap, allowing faint moonlight to shine through from outside. This moonlight wasn’t strong, but it was reassuring and utterly serene.
In the quiet of the night, at some unknown moment, the orange cat curled up next to the pillow suddenly shivered and then opened its large amber eyes, puzzledly looking overhead. In the dark room, the cat’s eyes seemed to glow, and its expression was as if it encountered a puzzle it completely failed to understand, just like it didn’t understand why Shard always had to go out.
The little cat got up from beside the pillow, but before it could make any move, a new source of light suddenly appeared in the room. It was the “Night Watchman,” hanging on the wall and serving as decoration. The sword was slightly vibrating while emitting a silver light.
At that moment, Shard, who was dreaming and looking up at the moon, suddenly heard a voice beside his ear:
“Maybe you should wake up now.”
“Hmm?”
Shard opened his eyes in the darkness; having just been observing the huge silver moon over the wilderness, for a fleeting moment he thought he saw through the floor and the ceiling above, glimpsing the real night sky.
But in the blink of an eye, the illusion disappeared. He sat up in bed, surprised to see the sword above the bedside cabinet glowing and humming, and noticed Mia making a threatening expression toward the bedroom door, her fur even slightly bristled.
“What’s the matter?”
Since he was alone at home, Shard had a habit of not closing doors while sleeping. After his ordeal in the Dark Realm, he had gained the ability to see faintly in the dark. Looking out into the living room through the doorway, he could only see a thin layer of white mist gradually dispersing, its edges even reaching the bedroom door.
“What is this?”
He gently stroked Mia’s back to reassure her, then left the bed as quietly as possible and grabbed the longsword. For ease of movement, he did not put on slippers but walked barefoot on the floor. Noticing Mia wanted to follow, he pointed to the bed, signaling the cat not to move.
The intelligent cat understood Shard’s gesture and actually lay down on the bed, looking at him pitifully.
Shard held the longsword in his right hand, its blade still emitting a weak silver light, while the bright yellow runes on the blade became even more conspicuous:
“What the hell is going on?”
The white mist stopped at the bedroom door and did not enter, but the fog outside the door was getting thicker, even worse than Tobesk’s most severe summer pollution.
As the sound of bells and steam whistles resonated, the Ring of Fate appeared completely behind Shard, and he took a deep breath at the doorway, inhaling some of the white mist into his lungs:
“What is this?”
“Fog.”
He nodded, sword in hand, and walked through the bedroom door into the living room. The sword stopped vibrating, but the string of bright yellow runes on the blade became brighter.
Shard squinted at his living room, which seemed both familiar and alien, then heard the wet sound of footsteps coming from the door connecting the living room to the staircase. The sound was almost like the mermaids he had encountered at Coldwater Port, though slightly different.
Holding the longsword toward the living room door, a cold and damp breeze blew across the floor from the white mist, which now featured floating green flames. The ghastly green light grew stronger, dyeing the entire patch of fog a disturbing green.
Meanwhile, the sound of palms slapping against the wall emanated from above, and Shard looked up to see a string of red footprints forming on the ceiling.
“This had better be a special effect from an evil spirit manifesting and impacting the space with its spiritual power because if it dares to stain my ceiling…”
“Meow!”
“Something is behind you.”
At the same time Mia called out her warning and “she” spoke, Shard felt an icy breeze against his neck. Before his body could react, the longsword in his hand automatically moved with his right hand to thrust backwards, its silver light completely withdrawn while the bright yellow runes became exceptionally bright, leaving a trace of light in the air.
The spiritual body with bleeding orifices that seemed to have moved behind Shard using spatial power, was thus impaled in the head by Shard’s sword. Shard didn’t even need to attack further; the evil spirit simply collapsed directly.
