Chapter 23: Serena Ashford

In a year one class four dorm for the girls, a girl sat on her chair late at night and stared at the piece of paper in front of her. She frowned down at it and muttered in confusion, "Severin Reignhart."

Her name was Serena Ashford, and for the past one month after the monthly assessment that Severin won, she'd been hung up over it. It was now more like an obsession to know just what Severin's deal was.

Serena had been watching him like a hawk, and the fact that he'd been promoted to class four made it easier. "He's a threat I must watch out for. He's literally the weakest student, and now he's here in my class? As the strongest of class four, I have to watch my back."

But even then, she was only left more confused each time she checked his background because Severin was the perfect random.

"He's an orphan and entered the Academy not on merit but as part of sponsorship for the less privileged. He's expected to be washed away in year one, but that seems highly unlikely now."

The news of what Severin did sent a ripple throughout the whole Academy. There were lots of speculations too. Some said Severin had learned some kind of forbidden technique, or he'd come to some secret fortune in terms of Artifact.

And some said he'd secretly wounded Ethan before the match, poisoning him while he alone had the cure. So many speculations, and yet none knew what happened. So people had been digging into his background, only to be left disappointed.

Until a month ago, he was nothing remarkable. Or close.

A lot of students, especially the stronger ones, simply dismissed him after some weeks. But Serena didn't. She'd met his eyes before, and she felt the danger in them.

So she'd been monitoring him.

Severin didn't do much the past month, and it almost seemed as if he was like a burning star that would flash once and never shine again.

He would go to classes with his subordinate Derrick. Serena had taken to calling him his subordinate because he ordered the bigger guy around. And at night, he would sleep if he didn't work as a cleaner at the research facility center.

Serena gripped her hair. "This guy. Why's he working in a research facility as a cleaner, earning one credit for hours of work? He also forces Derrick to work as well."

Her mouth curled at that. Derrick was another anomaly that was promoted to class four after his duel with Cole, and unlike Severin, he'd made a name for himself in the class with his constant fighting.

"So why's he following you around, Severin? Considering the fact that he's far stronger than you. Also, what do you have over Ethan Aldrich? He has even followed you to the research facility twice now to clean with you. You are weak, and yet the strong follow you that easily?"

"The only thing I can say is that you are consistent with your training. For the past one month now, you've been training in the abandoned building every midnight. You'll leave your new dorm and head to the one in class five. Severin Reignhart, just what are you planning?"

Due to the fact that she didn't want him to know that she was spying on him, she couldn't enter the building to know the type of training he was doing.

"And why the hell do you think you can create a House?" Serena's eyes narrowed. "I will find out what you are planning, you serpent!"

Severin stood in the middle of a room, his eyes narrowed in concentration at the dagger that was deep in the wall on the other side of the room.

Suddenly, he jerked his right hand, and a blue thread flashed before the dagger ripped free with a forceful wrench toward his head, but he caught it out of the air with deftness.

He nodded in satisfaction. "Seems I have mastered this one."

The room was dark, but he could see just fine. Not minding the dusty room, he crouched and flipped through the different books spread on the ground.

Not only books, there were jars and bottles with different bowls.

The money that he took from Ethan had been put to good use. He'd headed to the underground black market and used the WireRats connection and the merchant to find the technique books he was looking for.

It was technique books that were far outdated, those that were used when Etherion was very little on Earth. Techniques then focused on ways that the little Etherion the body produced could be put to great use.

He'd been studying such techniques for the past one month, all in preparation for the main event of the story that would be starting the next day.

He reached for the bowl in front of him, the one that was filled with green liquid that bubbled and hissed. Severin grimaced and then concentrated, covering his left hand in faint blue light, the manifestation of all the Etherion his body could produce.

And then, without hesitation, he dipped his hand into it.

He flinched and groaned immediately, and his hand trembled and veins popped on his arm. He was covered by cold sweat as pain made his eyes water.

Even one month of doing it hadn't made the pain any easier.

The liquid he dipped his hand in was made up of different poisons, all added together with a secret ingredient.

When his hand went numb, he raised it and quickly dipped it into the second bowl that was filled with blue liquid of healing potions. The healing liquid hissed, and steam rose into the air.

Severin sighed. The technique was called the Poison Hand, and it had a total of three moves. Two of them were impossible for him to learn due to the fact that he never imagined himself fast enough to touch any of his enemies.

But the last one, called Exploding Poison, was what he was aiming for.

He sighed again and began to repeat the process of pain and brief moments of calmness.
