Harlow stirred slightly, mumbling in her sleep as Alanis carefully laid her on the waiting room chair. He tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear before standing up to face the doctors.
"Is she alright?" His voice was low, edged with impatience.
The head doctor straightened, lowering his gaze respectfully. "Master Hamilton." His eyes flickered to Harlow, who slept soundly, her lips slightly parted. He seemed to wait for an explanation.
But Alanis gave him none.
When the silence stretched, the doctor cleared his throat. "Please, come with me to my office."
Alanis barely reacted. "I need a room for my wife first." His tone was firm, allowing no argument. "I can’t leave her like this."
A second doctor immediately bowed. "We’ll take care of it, sir." He hurried off, and within minutes, nurses arrived, gently lifting Harlow and taking her to a private ward.
Once Alanis was sure she was safe, he followed the doctor into his office.
As soon as they sat down, Alanis leaned forward. "How is she?" Came Alanis’s cold voice again.
The doctor exhaled, adjusting his glasses. "She has several broken bones. It could have been much worse if there hadn’t been a rug on the stairs."
Alanis’s jaw clenched.
"She’s lucky," the doctor continued. "The surgery went well. She should be awake by morning."
Then, lowering his voice as if about to share a secret, he leaned in.
"What really happened to her?" Everyone was quite aware of the news surrounding the Hamiltons, but the recent injuries were not online and the doctor was curious to know how they came about, especially since Alanis or his grandmother were not involved in any car accident.
Alanis’s expression turned to ice. "Can I see her now?"
The doctor sighed but nodded gently, standing, he gestured his hands to the door. "The nurses may have already moved her to one of the private wards. I’ll take you there."
As Alanis followed him, the doctor glanced at him from the corner of his eye. This man was unreadable. A stone cold man with no heart of human at all. For someone who has almost lost a family member, he looked so unbothered. Acting like there was anything special about his family. He rolled his eyes, his anger palpable.
If it were George who had brought the old woman instead, he would have spilled every detail, gossiping without shame.
But Alanis? He eyes the broad back before him.
Alanis said nothing...
When they arrived at Charlotte’s ward, the rhythmic beeping of machines filled the air.
She looked so small, so fragile, lying there with her eyes closed, her breathing slow and steady.
Alanis exhaled, some of the tension in his body easing.
She was alive.
It wasn’t as brutal as he had feared.
But for a moment, just a brief, agonizing moment, he had thought he lost her again. He wants this life to be different so badly, but he doubts it ever will be. He will need to stop George and Claudia before they get untameable. He wouldn’t want deliberate accidents like this happening again.
His fingers curled into fists at his sides. Teeth clenching.
He knew just how to handle George and Claudia. He’ll make them pay for everything they’ve done. He smiled.
"Elder Mrs Hamilton is now old and soft, if accidents like this should repeat again, she might never be able to recover." The doctor said calmly staring at the woman.
Back at the mansion, panic had already begun to spread.
Garth paced the room, her heart hammering. "What do you mean you’re not going anywhere?" she snapped at George, her frustration boiling over.
She had no idea why George was being so stubborn, staying here till Alanis got back would cause more trouble, especially since no one knows about Charlotte’s state right now.
Did he have a death wish?
Alanis wasn’t the type to forgive. If Charlotte dies, George is as good as dead.
Elisa was equally tense. None of her spies in the hospital had managed to get any information.
The entire top floor was locked down. And only two nurses had been accessible, yet none have been able to come out of there.
No one was talking to her at the moment. They all didn’t have the information she needed.
Nothing.
Even Frank, her last resort, had refused to answer her calls. At this point, she didn’t know what to do with that man anymore. It’s enough that they were going bankrupt even if they had been trying to hide it, but Frank not responding to her calls irked her to her bone.
Elisa had no idea when her powerful husband became less powerful.
Her fists clenched. Alanis hadn’t even acted yet, and they were already shaking.
Why?
Why was she suddenly scared of that boy?
He was nothing. Just a piece of trash she could crush under her heel.
And yet...
Why did she feel like she was about to lose?
The Hamilton’s had rules. It was fun when to the said rules were administered to Alanis and Harlow, but she couldn’t watch her daughter go through that torture.
The Hamilton’s will have to bend their rules for Claudia.
"Just listen for once in your life. You can live in the Blackwood’s mansion with your sister, and once everything is over, you both can return." Garth tried to explain.
"No way, we have rights in this family as they do mother. Why will I keep running from that stupid boy when I know he can’t do anything? Plus Alanis is injured, what can an injured man really do?" George asked with a smile.
He has thought it through and for once his fiance was right. He had every right to stay here. Enough of Alanis and Charlotte treating him like a child. He would prove to that brother of his that he’s no longer the George he knows.
Garth grabbed his arm, desperation creeping into her voice. "George, please..."
But Elisa cut in smoothly. "That’s enough, Garth. Let them stay."
Garth turned to her, shocked. "What?"
"I want to see what Alanis will do." She declared enough was really enough.
Alanis was just one man. One wounded, exhausted man.
There were four. They could take him down, it’s not like he’s some God.
Little did they know, they had all just made a mistake underestimating that man.
A foolish, arrogant mistake.
They had no idea who they were dealing with.
Elisa turned to Garth, her voice colder than before. "It’s time you hardened yourself. Alanis isn’t untouchable. He can’t harm his family."
Garth swallowed hard. They both knew that wasn’t true.
But Elisa wasn’t finished.
"We will stand our ground and fight. I’ll call Frank. He’ll send men here." tonight hell would break loose because she would never let that boy lay a finger on her daughter.
"But the rules?" Garth whispered.
Elisa scoffed. "They are null and void." But she was not a part of the family to declare such.
"Let’s go to bed. My baby cannot spend another hour awake." Claudia cried out and they scattered as everyone went to their respective rooms.
