Chapter 215: New Guide

When Ava woke up a few hours later, the first thing she did was to look up, and sigh with relief once she confirmed she was in her room, and not in the hospital. Next, she scrambled out of bed, ignoring the post-awakening soreness of her whole body, and grabbed onto Lane, who was sitting on one of the bean bag sofas and playing games on his phone to pass the time.

"You’re awake?" he asked, pausing the game. "What is... Ah."

There was no need to ask or say anything else, as everything was clear the moment Ava’s wavelengths flowed into Lane’s body.

She was a Guide.

And a damn good one, it seemed, based on the intensity of the flow. Or it could also be that they had a great compatibility - it had been discovered that the Guides worked better with some Espers rather than the others, although how and why it was, was still unknown. Either way, that was not the point.

"Well, don’t worry about it," Lane consoled the girl. "No one knows you awakened. We’ll just keep it a secret, like we agreed."

"...Yeah." Ava let out a sigh, and dropped limply on the other bean bag. ƒrēenovelkiss.com

It wasn’t so much that she was against being a Guide. Unlike Lane, she didn’t need the power, and had no interest in fighting either. The problem only lay in the government, which forced every Guide to work for them...

And Ava wanted to be a scientist. A researcher. Which required a lot of time and dedication. Time, which she wouldn’t have if she had to constantly take care of the Espers, providing them guiding, and possibly even going on raids.

Luckily, thanks to her thinking ahead, she already had a plan in place, and with Lane’s help, everything worked out. Thus, she quickly dismissed her disappointment, and turned her eyes back to Lane.

"So, how was your last raid?"

"Eh? You wanna talk about that now?"

"Why not?"

"Hmm." Lane paused. The truth was, he really wanted to discuss, maybe not the raid, but what happened with Ethan, with Ava, but he was reluctant to bring it up. After all, Ava just had such a life-changing experience, and not the most... pleasant one, so it didn’t seem like the most suitable time to bother her with his problems. But, if the girl herself asked...

Then Lane had no reason to hold back. Perhaps it was even better, to give Ava a problem to solve, so that she wouldn’t think about her own issue? Not that she was ever the type to dwell on her troubles, but an awakening was a big deal, she had never had to deal with anything quite like that before.

So he relayed to her first how the raid had gone, and then, about his conversation with Ethan, and about the feeling he got when they kissed. Ava listened, rubbing her chin, and asking some questions every now and then...

"Maybe it’s not about the blood," she said after he finally finished talking. "Perhaps it’s just the DNA that’s needed."

"Uh... And how did we exchange DNA? We were just making out..."

Ava lifted her brows, looking at Lane as if he were an idiot. "Saliva has DNA."

"...Oh. Okay." Well, how was he supposed to know that? Was it even taught in school? Lane wouldn’t know, he never paid attention anyway, and barely advanced from class to class in most of the subjects, especially in the past two, three years. "Well, anyway. So the conclusion is that I just need to exchange DNA, is that it?"

That didn’t change anything for it. Lane might have been far from prudent, and liked making out with people, but that didn’t mean he would kiss just anyone! Especially not a dying person who usually couldn’t even respond. He’d much rather just stick to exchanging blood.

However, Ava soon said, "It doesn’t necessarily have to be an EXCHANGE. Maybe your target just needs to consume your DNA."

"But my past targets didn’t consume-"

"Consume, absorb into the bloodstream, same difference! The point is, maybe they just need to have your DNA inside their bodies. Either way, let’s test it out!"

Before she even finished talking, Ava was already up, heading toward the door, even though her steps were still unsteady.

"Wait a sec, test it out how?"

"By me consuming your DNA! I don’t want really want to drink your saliva, so we’re just going to go with blood again."

"...And drinking blood is fine?" Lane lifted his brows, amused.

"Well, it’s for science. How else are we supposed to test it out?"

"Fine, fine." Lane shrugged his shoulders. Personally, he didn’t care, so if Ava wanted to do it, then why not. "You wanted to go get the knife, right? Just wait here, I’ll go instead."

If Ava were to walk down in her current state, she would take forever. Not to mention, she might tumble down the stairs. And even though she was an Awakened now, she was a Guide, she could still get hurt quite easily.

Lane quickly sneaked downstairs, making sure not to make any noise, so as not to wake the housekeeper and Ava’s parents, who had returned from their labs a while ago, and had already gone to sleep. He returned shortly after with the kitchen knife and the first aid kit, and they conducted their ’experiment’.

And it worked. As Ava swallowed the blood, Lane, who was holding her hand, felt that familiar instinctive impulse, which told him that his ability was ready to be used. Naturally, he didn’t do it - although he had confirmed he could leave without the host dying, it was still unclear what his ability did to his targets - and just let go of Ava’s hand.

Well, it seemed that from now on, he wouldn’t have to mix the blood, he could just drip some into the target’s mouth or wounds. Not much difference, but whatever.

"By the way, about the guiding," Ava said, as they lounged on the bean bags, watching a thriller series. "Next time, come to me first. I’ll guide you a bit, so that Ethan won’t suspect anything."

"...Are you sure?" Lane threw a surreptitious glance at his friend. "I thought you didn’t want to be a Guide?"

"Well." Ava shrugged her shoulders. "If it’s just for you, then I don’t mind."

Lane sighed with relief. Of course, he was thinking about asking about it eventually, once Ava got used to her new ability, but he was really glad she brought it up first!

"Thanks a lot!" he smiled. "You’re the best!"
