The Kingmaker System-Chapter 46 - 45. Extermination (1)
Chapter 46: 45. Extermination (1)
I stayed in Davian’s room all night to keep an eye on his condition after the doctor and everyone else had left.
"He’s really having a rough time."
[Defender of Divine Glory says it’s part of the life.]
[Goddess of Wisdom corrects that it’s because of the law of cause and effect.]
"Karma huh..." I mumbled and then recalled something.
"Cause and effect..." I mumbled and frowned as I felt as if I had forgotten something.
I shook my head and decided to look into the matter of the assassination first. The three assassins from today were dressed as the household personnel so, they might either have disguised themselves or there might be moles within the castle.
"God! More work." I groaned.
Davian groaned a little and I clamped my mouth as I walked over and stoked the fire a little to keep it from going out.
The fire reminded me of Eric, I wonder how he was doing, he gave me his word that he would study and train hard so, I was expecting some good results when I returned.
I checked on Davian’s temperature and changed the wet cloth on his forehead before I went back and sat down on the armchair where I was seated.
I pulled out the communication device brooch that Silas had given me, I had to start looking for information.
"Uncle, are you there?" I asked through it.
"..."
"Uncle, are you sleeping?" I asked and heard a light grumble from the other side.
"... It’s past midnight... Of course, I was sleeping." I heard his groggy voice.
"I need some information," I said.
"Can’t it wait?"
"It’s regarding an important issue here in North." I said and heard a yawn.
"Did you get into some trouble?"
"What do you know about the breached Third Wall of Frosthail?" I asked and heard the sound of shuffling on the other side before a sigh.
"... Why do you want to know about it?"
"I’m curious, I visited it and the wall didn’t seem like it could be breached so easily. Something’s wrong, someone purposely breached it but why and how, I couldn’t find that."
"Nobody was able to." Silas corrected.
"That’s why I’m asking you."
"I don’t know either."
"Is there a way to find out about the things happened six months ago?"
"Magic isn’t that convenient, Reina."
"Then is there a way to find some traces like Mana traces or any sort of traces that would be left behind from months ago?"
"No, there isn’t..." He said and then sighed.
"Look Reina, I told you it’s not wise to go there. The more you get involved the deeper it goes so, stop it. Only train yourself and your attendant and then come back as I said. Do you understand?"
I remained silent as I heard his words.
"Reina, do you understand?"
I would need to ask the people who were there at that time or the ones who were at the spot when the traces were found.
"God, Reina!" I heard Silas sighing.
"I understand, I won’t do anything stupid and come back as you wanted." I spoke up.
"I’m finding it a little hard to believe that you will."
I smiled, "Are you a psychic, Uncle?"
Silas sighed again and I could picture him running his hand through his hair.
"Reina... you-"
"Also, do you know about the ones who would benefit from killing Davian?"
"... There are plenty."
"Can I have the list then?"
"What are you planning?"
"I would have said extermination but you told me not to cause trouble so, I’ll just do the needful stuff and stay quiet."
"I find that hard to believe as well." I ended up laughing at that.
"I’ll see what I can do and return safely. Don’t worry, Uncle and also, please don’t fight with my Father and Grandfather while I’m gone."
"I don’t fight with them because I want to."
"How are they anyways? They can’t contact me while I’m here."
"They’re good, your Father and Rune miss you and ask me about you whenever I visit."
"You visit?"
"To deliver the reports about the research.*
"Ah, right. How’s my lair?"
"The lair is all right, everyone is all right and everything is going smoothly. Your town and your townspeople are also safe. Is there anything left for you to ask?"
I chuckled, "Nothing, just take good care of yourself, Uncle. Good night."
"Good night."
The line went silent and I smiled at the clear stone of the brooch. It had only been a week but I missed them all already.
The mere thought of them being in any trouble was enough to freeze away my rationality and amidst that situation Davian was trying to keep everything together. I appreciated his hard work and his perseverance which was why, I found myself respecting him.
Davian recovered within two days of his fever and after that he went back to his work while I went to mine.
After that night, I ordered Lyall to report me about the servants that worked in the castle and he returned with some useful intel.
"Guess this weekend we are going into town." I announced after his report.
The next day after the work at the Wall, I requested a meeting with Davian which was quickly approved. I entered the room alone as I had told Lyall to do some other work.
Davian’s study room was cleaned up and was returned to its original state.
"Hello, Sir Ocean." Ethan greeted me as I entered and I smiled at him.
"Hello, Baron Liswith."
The other household personnel started liking me and some fearing me after the word about me protecting Davian and killing the assassins came to light. It was rather amusing to see the maids look at me starry-eyed and the male servants to try to strike up a conversation with me.
"Good evening, Your Grace." I bowed before Davian and he looked up from the papers in his hands.
"Good evening." His greeting was still quite dry.
"Have you had lunch yet?" I asked.
"Yes."
"That’s good."
"Ah, I forgot about it." Ethan suddenly gasped.
"What is it?"
"I needed to check a few things before making the report. Please pardon me." He smiled before he left the room after a glance at Davian.
There was a moment of silence before I opened my mouth.
"I-"
"That-"
I and Davian ended up speaking simultaneously.
"Ah, I apologise, please go ahead." I said.
"It’s all right, you wanted to ask something."
"Well, yes. I wanted to request you the permission of going out in town tomorrow evening."
"In the evening?"
"I will finish my work at the Fourth Wall and then go to the town."
He was silent for a moment before he said, "You can take a day off."
"I can?"
"Yes, you have been working hard so, a day off is fine."
"You’re quite a generous employer, Your Grace." I smiled.
"But, I have work in evening so, it will be wasteful to have the whole day off."
"Do whatever as you like." He spoke as his eyes drifted to the papers again.
"Thank you, Your Grace." I bowed and turned to leave.
"That-"
I stopped as I heard Davian speak up and I looked at him.
"Archmage sent this letter for you." He spoke before picking up and envelope from the stack of the other letters.
I walked up to him and took the envelope and smiled.
This must be what I asked him of.
"It’s good that he sent it quickly." I mumbled.
"Thank you." I smiled before turning.
"Wait."
I turned again and saw Davian looking at his papers.
"Um... Please tell someone to bring some tea and refreshments for me."
"All right, Your Grace."
I left his study and gave his message to the maid passing by before I went back to my room.
Lyall waited outside waiting for me and I gestured him to go inside with me.
"I got the permission to go out tomorrow. How’s that thing doing?"
"I’ve kept it under control." He spoke and I nodded.
"We can’t stir up too much trouble so, we’ll have to be quick."
"Yes, Master."
I sat down on the armchair and opened the envelope that Silas had sent me. I read the contents of the letter and couldn’t help but feel slightly angry.
"Every one is a damn greedy pig." I mumbled.
"Is something wrong, Master?"
"Yes, everything. Guess, I will need to start an extermination after all."
"Pardon?"
"Memorize this," I handed him the letter and started formulating a plan in my head.
"Do we have to get rid of all these?" Lyall asked and I shook my head. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com
"Not yet,"
Investigation and intel gathering came first and there were a lot of holes in the information that was around me so, I needed to get down in the field and work myself to gather the kind of intel that I wanted.
"Such pain!" I groaned.
"Pardon, Master. Are you in pain?"
"Not that kind of pain, Lyall. It’s too much work."
At night, I put on my invisibility device and patrolled the castle looking for any snooping rats while also keeping an eye on Davian who worked till late at night and then went back to his room.
I remembered the condition of the students of my past life who would have to study for extra hours in order to get good grades. All slaves to the education system.
And this one kid was the slave to his position.
