Chapter 57: 56. Remains of Someone’s Hope (3)

I placed my two orders in front of the nobles making them stare at me with bewildered expressions.

"What?!"

"It’s impossible!"

"Ah, is that so?" I asked and the eight assassins moved in unison holding the tips of their knives onto the necks of the men.

"Wha-"

"Think well, before you answer. Do you have the luxury of saying no to me?"

Their faces went pale as the edge of the knife went deeper into their skin drawing out blood.

"I’ll release every bit of information about all of your dirty secrets with evidence and make sure that your families suffer hell after your deaths while cursing you." I said with a smile.

"Devil..." Raleigh sneered and I laughed.

"I don’t mind being called a devil by the lesser demons like you. If you can think of something bad I can do worse."

"You can’t!" Fyedor shouted.

"I can and I will. And your even your mother who gives you orders won’t be able to stop me."

Fyedor’s face went ashy as he heard that.

"Wha-What do you mean?"

"Exactly what you’re thinking." I smirked.

"Yo-You... How do you..."

"You make me repeat things, old man. I told you I know everything."

Fyedor was the man who was acting as the eyes and ears of the Queen in North, it was her order that Davian should die so that she could get control of North.

I had my doubts that she might be the one who made that explosion possible but she wasn’t taking advantage of it. She must know of it but she wasn’t doing anything which was suspicious enough for me but for now, all I could do was sort out things so that she wouldn’t have her influence here.

She could use the Third Wall as her way of getting at Montaire family but I had a plan for that as well.

"You can’t be thinking of making her your enemy."

"That’s my concern, old man. Now, make a decision I don’t have all night. If you don’t return to your houses by morning then my sources will release your secrets all over the kingdom."

The men gasped and looked at each other with helplessness and fear on their faces.

"It’s not as easy as you think."

"Oh, but what I can do is pretty easy. Now, decide." I wasn’t going to let them stall or evade this thing.

I didn’t have time to visit them again and again.

After a few minutes of watching them deal with their hesitation one by one they broke and agreed to follow my orders.

"Good choice. Now, please know one final thing, if you think of snitching or trying something funny then I won’t bother to warn ahead of time. Just know that you’ll be losing everything that you’ve worked for."

They stared at me with the fear imminent in their eyes before they nodded and I let them off.

I returned to the Frosthail castle just as the rays of the dawn started to slice through thick clouds.

I didn’t get a wink of sleep.

After two hours, I was in front of Davian for breakfast, he looked a bit tensed and I knew why.

It was the first day of the official beginning of the reinvestigation of the incident of the Third Wall.

He must be worried about the outcome.

"You..." He started.

"Yes?"

"You will be heading to the Third Wall today."

"Yes."

Davian’s eyes darted everywhere before finding their home on me.

"After so long will you really be able to uncover something?"

"I don’t know," I answered making him stare.

"I mean, I won’t know unless I go and check."

Davian was quiet after that and the time of my departure arrived.

Sir Adler, the few knights and a carriage was ready in front of the castle just as I had instructed.

"Sir Adler will ride with me in the carriage, the rest will be on the horsebacks."

"I’d like to ride a horse too." Adler insisted.

"Yes, no. I’m leading this team so, I’m giving orders. Now, get on the carriage." I pointed at the carriage and Sir Adler reluctantly got on with a hand from the coachman.

I got on after him and our journey started.

Sir Adler sat with back straight and face rigid, his crutches were leaning against the seat beside him.

"Why the long face, Sir Adler?" I asked.

"It’s my usual expression, Sir Ocean."

"It’s frustrating to lean on someone since you’ve been standing on your own two feet for all life." I spoke making him look at me with a slight frown.

"Is that how you’re feeling right now?"

His lips pursed in a firm line before he turned his head and looked out of the window.

"I’m in no place to be giving advices because even I, if I were in your place would feel quite frustrated if I had to disturb others for my chores. The feeling of helplessness is quite... aggravating."

"Are you trying to comfort me right now?"

I chuckled, "Do I sound comforting to you?"

Sir Adler crossed his arms at his chest making me shake my head.

"I don’t really care what others think as long as they don’t get in my way. You, as a matter of fact are an integral part of the Seraph Knights who not only protect this territory and empire but also stand beside His Grace as his family’s pride. So, what I mean to tell you is,"

He looked at me attentively as I added, "It’s fine to lean on others for a while since you can’t do anything about your mortal body’s limits but, if you keep on insisting on acting tough and end up with some irreparable damage and that somehow ends up harming His Grace then... I won’t forgive you."

Sir Adler’s eyes grew hard as I said that and I looked out of the window as the huge Siern mountain grew larger in size along with the line of the wall that was hindered at one spot.

"You think I will end up as a liability for His Grace?" Adler asked and I sighed before turning my cold gaze on him.

"Accepting your temporary weak moment isn’t going to do anything bad but if you keep neglecting your injuries and hinder your body from recovery then you will become a liability for him."

The carriage stopped as our destination had arrived and I got down along with Adler who seemed like he’d chewed a lemon.

I walked up to the wall that I had seen only a few nights ago but this time in the day’s light it seemed less dreary. I walked up to the length of the wall and the knights started telling me about the story of the wall that I had heard before.

They gave me the details in real life as of where the Archduke had been standing and how he had been taking care of the rogue shifters while also trying to find out the reason for the explosion.

There were a few rogue shifters which were swiftly taken care of before I observed the Wall in a clear light but, nothing seemed quite different from the last time.

The snow was covering the base of the wall and I shoved some away to look at the ground.

"This whole part here in the ground was caved in and the stones were laying everywhere." Garett said pointing at the ground where a small part of the wall and already been rebuilt.

"You had said that none of stones were left on the wall in this section, right?" I asked pointing at the base of the wall and he nodded.

"Yes, we thought it might have happened because the explosives were planted under the ground at the base."

I had that speculation too but I still couldn’t solidly be sure that it was a bomb that was placed under ground that blew the wall off since it would need to be a very strong bomb to blow something like this wall.

Not even the tanks of our time could destroy this monstrous wall then what kind of bomb of this era managed to destroy it so badly?

"Shall we retrace the path that Archduke and Archduchess went?" I asked and the knights started leading me over to the mountain.

The chill in the air grew thicker as we walked closer to the humongous mountain, it wasn’t snowing but there were clouds that were hanging above that made it hard to see the top of the mountain.

"Had anyone ever climbed the top of this mountain?" I asked.

"Not really, the ancestors of the Montaire family and even a few Knights climbed the mountain but regardless the season they couldn’t reach the peak because it is very cold and hard to see since there are always clouds blocking the peak." Henders explained.

"Did the previous Grand Duke ever tried to do it?"

"Huh? Yes, he did but even he didn’t succeed."

We climbed a little height and the knights started telling me about how the snowstorm that day was whipping around and they started falling in the back. freeωebnovēl.c૦m

"This is where we were before we lost them." Ford said.

"And the Grand Duke and others were all the way up." Garett pointed further up and I nodded.

I started going up feeling the knee-deep snow hindering my movements. It wasn’t even snowing today still the snow was quite thick how on earth did those people rush so far up in a blizzard?

"Sir Ocean?" I heard a call and looked down at the knights who were a few feet behind.

"Please be careful, there are several points here where the snow covers the pits or caves, if you fall into one of them you’ll be lost forever or fall to your death. Many people who sought to climb the mountain fell prey to these traps and froze to death."

Frost was in my bloodline so, freezing to death wasn’t possible for me. But it wouldn’t hurt to be a little careful.

"All right, thanks for the warning."

The first day’s investigation ended after the enactment of the incident where every knight did their part quite well and I could envision it clearly.

"We’ll be searching for some clues on the mountain tomorrow so, dress up warmly and carry the proper mountain climbing equipment." I instructed before we called it a day.

The dusk drew close and we returned to the Frosthail castle where I received a news that I wasn’t expecting.
