Chapter 87: 86. Impending War (3)

I explained the plan to the party in front of me and none interrupted until I was done.

"Are you insane?" Arkan was again the first to start.

"You want to rescue a Prisoner who was captured from another Kingdom?"

There was an air of grim silence around the Commander while the others might just be perceiving me as a suicidal fool.

Regardless, I knew my plan would work if everything went well.

"Do you even know what the Beast does with his prisoners? The fact that he has them in the lower level cells mean that their bodies are long destroyed." Faim spoke making me feel the cold settle in my bones again.

"Would you say the same regarding your comrades who were arrested?" I asked making his eyes go wide.

"I will bring them out of that place along with the ones I’m here for."

"Even if you do that they will have lost their will!"

"And how do you know that?" I asked making the two to clamp their mouths shut.

"They might be in those dark cells, clinging to life desperately in hopes that their comrades will be successful and one day they will be able to step out in sunlight. Thanking their endurance and your efforts."

"If I am able to put my trust in their hope then why can’t you as their comrades do the same?"

The two stared at me and didn’t say anything after that as they avoided their eyes with deep frowns on their faces.

"The plan should be put in action without any delays, I would have to rescue the prisoners before the Sestian army marches on Mordino." I concluded.

"So, who will bring you to the palace?" Hael asked.

"I will." The fourth Captain who had been silent throughout the whole ordeal volunteered making me look at her.

It was a woman who was carrying a crossbow, she didn’t have two fingers on her left hand and there was a scar that ran from her shoulder to her elbow.

"Captain Ruba, I will assign this responsibility to you then." The Commander announced and she looked once at me.

"We don’t have much time, so, I’ll go prepare for a disguise before we set out." I stood up before I bowed slightly.

"I’ll take my leave then, My liege."

I heard the gasps before I turned seeing my teammates also bowing behind me to the person behind the curtain.

"Let’s go." I said and the five followed behind me.

We left the conference and they walked up to room given to me. freewebnøvel.com

"Come inside for a moment." I spoke as I entered my room and the five followed.

I stood near the table with my back against it and crossed my arms at my chest as I looked at my team.

"During the meeting," I started making them flinch and then kneel instantly.

"We-We’re sorry, Master." Doctor stuttered.

"Please forgive us!" Sniper cried.

"We shouldn’t have spoken without your permission!" Burglar shouted.

"But, we couldn’t just stay put when that bull was spouting nonsense about you!" Cook blurted.

"I would have killed those two right away, if they had pulled anything against you, Master. And I don’t feel sorry about that." Lyall spoke up as he too kneeled beside the four assassins.

"Do you think I can’t stand up for myself?" I asked making them go stiff.

"W-We just couldn’t stand them insulting you, Master."

"Well, it’s good that you know what mistake you made but the next time, even if you speak up don’t try to make things worse. If you think you can handle killing them right away then do so instead of talking." I said making the five look up at me with comical-looking expressions.

"I-Is that all right?" Cook asked.

"Yes."

"So, we can kill anyone who insults you?" Sniper asked.

"Only if things go out of hand. Don’t go around creating a bloodshed, I will be taking all responsibility after all."

"Yes? What?" Doctor gasped.

"What? You didn’t think I’d leave you guys to handle it all alone when you’re doing it for me. You are my people so whatever you do, good or bad is my responsibility."

I could have sworn that I saw their eyes turning larger than their original size before they turned glossy just like a puppy’s clear doe eyes.

"M-Master!" Burglar pounced on me followed by Doctor, Sniper, then Cook.

"We’re sorry, Master! We’ll treat you with utmost respect."

"We will kill anyone who dares to disrespect our beautiful and brave, Master!"

I sighed as they clung to me like the elf and dwarf kids used to and I patted their heads and backs looking at Lyall who stood in his place giving me the same puppy eyes look.

"Join in." I said and he stepped ahead and engulfed us all in his large arms making me smile.

These kids...

The five calmed down after a while of crying and I looked at their puffed eyes and wondered if they were really the coldblooded assassins who were sent here as spies and who had killed numerous people.

Well, even assassins were humans after all.

I sensed the presence before the person arrived and my team looked at the door as the knock resounded.

"May I enter?" She asked and I smiled.

"Please do, Commander."

"Were you having a meeting?" She asked looking at my entire team.

"No," I said.

"I would like to have a word with you, Master Ocean." She looked at me and then at my team.

"In private." She added making my team look at me.

"It’s fine, go back and make preparations." I instructed my team who bowed before they left my room.

"You-"

I rose my hand stopping her and then tilted my head looking at the doorway sensing the five presences still lingering close by.

"I precisely told you all to leave, didn’t I?" I asked hearing them all scurry away this time.

"Please have a seat." I said gesturing at the bed as that was the only decent seat in the room.

"No, I’m fine."

"I request you, My Lady." I spoke making her clench her teeth.

"So... you really know." She mumbled before she went over and plopped down on the bed.

"How would I not? You are one of the people I’m here for after all." I answered as I stood in front of her with my hands at back and head slightly bowed.

"The Commander Dayla of Revolutionary Army of Mordino or Lady Dahlia Montaire, Grand Duchess of Frosthail." I spoke making her sigh. It wasn’t only because of her appearance but also because of the energy that she carried.

Her presence had the traces of what I felt around Davian, not exactly aura but something which was like an amalgamation of mana and aura.

"I don’t recognise you though, why are you here to save us?" She asked.

"Because I was the one who gave your son the hope that you two are alive." I answered making her eyes go wide before she looked at me.

"You..."

"Before arriving here, I was in Frosthail assisting His Grace Davian. I was investigating your disappearance when I got the information about you being captives here so, I set out to rescue you."

"You came on your own?" She asked and I nodded.

"I couldn’t tell His Grace because he wouldn’t have trusted me so, I decided to go on my own."

"But... the message about us being captives was sent to His Majesty, why wouldn’t he believe you?" She asked.

"There are two reasons for that, one being that the information about you and Grand Duke being captives was never made public by His Majesty."

"What?!"

"They had also conspired to take out His Grace Davian by sending assassins and influencing the nobles into making his inheriting the title hard."

Her jaw clenched and fist balled up.

"Are you telling the truth right now?"

"Isn’t it suspicious that no one came to your rescue even after eight months of you being captured here?" I asked and her eye grew strained.

"That sly bastard! Considering Alarice’s contribution to the kingdom I hoped that he would have a little humanity but I guess I was expecting a lot from those snake-like couple."

Snake-like couple? King and Queen? She had the same idea of them as me. It made me feel a bit more better.

"Please, calm down, My Lady." I said and she closed her eye.

"My son... He must have been tormented so much behind us."

"He was," I confirmed.

"But, he will be fine now and from hence on."

"What?"

"After seeing his condition, I have made arrangements to protect him from all kinds of dangers."

She frowned, "What?"

"I won’t elaborate on that as you might not find my ways ethical."

"Wait, what did you do?" She asked and I smiled not answering.

I couldn’t tell her that I exploited the weaknesses and placed the lives on line to threaten those who threatened Davian’s life.

She sighed and asked, "What is the second reason that my son doesn’t believe you?"

"Don’t you see it too?" I asked and she eyed me up and down.

"He doesn’t believe you because you’re a Dragon?" She asked.

"There is a Lesser Dragon amongst the people who destroyed the Third Wall... He saw them when they came to destroy the Second Wall and thought that I was a part of them."

"Did they destroy the Second Wall as well?" She asked and I shook my head.

"I reached there on time so, they failed."

She sighed, "He misunderstood then..."

"Yes,"

"But... even after that, why would you go to such lengths to protect Davian and even come all the way here?" She asked and I smiled.

"Because I was the only one who could." I answered.

She chuckled, "I don’t think I prayed but since a Dragon descended, I think someone must have prayed sincerely."

"They must have." I agreed.

She was quiet for a moment before I asked the questions that I had in my mind.

"Now, could you please tell me about what happened back at the Third Wall and how you reached here, My Lady?"

She sighed and started explaining, "It was a chaotic night with the horde of rogues suddenly pouring in from the breached wall. First of all, no one believed that the walls that had been protecting the kingdom for such a long time had been breached but when we arrived on spot..."

She shook her head, "It was catastrophic, I and Alarice along with the Seraph Knights did our best and managed to get everything under control but we also had to know what caused it. So, we started investigating."

"Just when he was investigating he noticed the Mana traces of a strange creature and he followed it."

"So, His Grace can sense us too." I mumbled.

"Yes, he had taught me how to use Aura that’s why I was able to sense your presence as well." She explained and I nodded.

"When we followed all the way till the Siern Mountain, we saw the two men clad in black. One of them was a Dragon who attacked us and tried to escape but, Alarice and I charged ahead."

"I didn’t expect them to use a teleportation device, but since Alarice and I were already onto them we got teleported along with them... We had taken the direct hit of that Dragon’s attack so," she touched her missing eye, "We were injured, we couldn’t do much after that because their reinforcements were already there."

"We got captured and then were brought all the way here. I managed to escape at night but I couldn’t take Alarice with me, I was barely alive and felt as if I would die any moment. I managed to drag myself till a small temple at the outskirts of Mordino."

Her eye met mine before she continued, "The old priest there helped me, they hid me when those captors came looking for me and from there I got to know what kind of things were happening in Mordino."

"I entered Mordino and while fighting one day, I ended up running into the Revolutionary Army’s leader and... lost my arm in process of saving them."

Her hand brushed over her missing appendage before she sighed looking down at her hand.

"I don’t know what... Alarice is going through but I’ve been trying to save him all this while."

"It must have been so hard for you, right?" I said and she clenched her fist, closing her eyes as her whole body tensed.

"Maybe it runs into your family." I mumbled making her look at me.

"What?"

"Not voicing your pain." I answered.

"Please pardon my rudeness, My Lady." I said as I stepped ahead and wrapped my arms around her.
