The Princess And The Lord-Chapter 1330: The Last Witness
Chapter 1330: The Last Witness
__Beast’s Slayer Guild__
Jack was watching the saintess speech enthusiastically before suddenly the television turned off, Jack was stunned and then saw Maddy holding the remote then throwing it on the coffee table.
"Hey Maddy, why did you turn it off!" Jack opened his arms, complaining.
"Why are you watching that pretentious snob again, don’t you have better things to do?!" Maddy scolds the lazy man who wastes his time watching TV instead of working.
"I was just taking a break, I just turned on the TV and saw her, you know I could refuse beautiful girl~" Jack cracked a joke but Maddy’s sharp glare made him clamp his mouth.
"What so good about that wannabe?!" Maddy grumble.
"Don’t be mad...Maddy, I just find it funny how she tries so hard to look like Princess Lorient." Jack explained, but Maddy’s expression didn’t improve.
"Come on honey, don’t keep pouting, your face will quickly wrinkle, what will happen if you’re not pretty anymore?" he teased.
Mady threw a cushion at Jack’s face. "Shut up, old man! You better finish your work when I get back!" she stomped her feet as she left the room and slammed the door on her way out.
"Why is she mad?" Jack was baffled and then immediately checked the desk calendar in front of him, "Hmm..It’s not the time of the month yet..." He scratched his jaw which was covered in stubble.
If Maddy had seen Jack marking some of the dates with a bomb emoji, she would have thrown something more than just a cushion at Jack’s face.
Jack was still contemplating what he should do to persuade the fierce young girl when suddenly his phone rang, it was a familiar number so he immediately picked it up, "Yo Garry, I heard you caused a lot of chaos at AEON~"
Garrof snorted, "Whatever, let’s cut to the chase, I know you’ve been working with the Archknight—"
"Hold up!" Jack halted the conversation, he cast the sound barrier inside the room then his tone became serious, "How did you know?"
"Because I also work for them, their superior to be exact" Garrof couldn’t help but brag. freewēbnoveℓ.com
Lloyd heard Garrof deliberately bragging to Jack and rolled his eyes ’Childish’
Jack was stunned "The archknight’s superior? Who? The king? Buddy, are you sure you’re not being pranked!"
There was only one person who had the right to command the archknight and that was King Harland but he couldn’t believe a man of honor like King Lucas would interact with a boorish like Garrof.
"Prank, my as*!" Garrof yelled into the phone causing Jack to pull the phone away from his ear.
Garrof took a deep breath to control his anger and then spoke again in a deep voice, "Hey buddy, do you want to make history?"
"....." Jack paused for a moment then sighed, "Garrof, are you drunk or under some kind of spell or something? Where’s Lloyd? Is he there?"
Garrof’s anger finally reached its peak, "Hey, I’m not under any influence you son of —!"
Lloyd knew this was going to happen, he snatched the phone from Garrof’s hand, "Hey Jack, this is serious, we have a mission from Mr. Thornberry and Mr. Equillan to find Samuel Albrecht"
"Oh really?" Only now did Jack take it seriously as he could hear Garrof cursing.
"Yes, we will get full support from Harland, they even sent Noxcra agents to help," Lloyd said.
"It seems more serious than before" The corner of Jack’s eyes creased with concern.
"It is, by the way, we can’t involve anyone else at the ex-ultima infantry other than the three of us and Gavin, this is too big and we don’t know who can be trusted" Lloyd reminded.
Jack could feel the gravity of the situation, "Okay, so Samuel Albrecht, what about him?" Jack didn’t know what the Archknight would need from an outcast like Samuel Albrecht, the again considering the suspicious circumstances around him it seemed like the man was more important than he had thought.
"I can’t talk about it on the phone, let’s meet somewhere safe" With their status as fugitives they need to avoid any attention.
"Let’s meet at the Red Angel, eleven o’clock sharp," Jack said.
"Another strip club, huh?" Lloyd scoffed, he never liked those places.
"Where else a guy like us could enter without raising suspicion?" Jack grumbled.
"Okay, see you there!" Lloyd hung up.
Meanwhile, Jack was deep in thought, then after a while he called the front desk downstairs, but it wasn’t Maddy who answered, "Hey, where’s Maddy?" "Miss Thornwood went out to get some personal items she said," the clerk replied.
"Oh, okay" he hung up after that he took his cell phone then started typing.
Jack tilted his head, frowning. "She might be buying supplies for this month, but I already bought everything for her. Should I tell her...?"
________________________________
Madeline was walking down the street with a bag of groceries in one hand and an ice cream cone in the other. Enjoying a cold sweet treat on a hot day was a pleasure she never took for granted.
Eight years ago, she would not have dared to think that her life would be so carefree and every day would be filled with fun, even enjoying the silly jokes between her and Jack.
A smile spread across her face as Maddy remembered the day Jack had saved her, it had been over a decade ago, but she still remembered it so clearly.
The smell of the abandoned warehouse, the cold night that bit her skin, the terrifying sounds of the wild animals, and the despair she felt that night, then suddenly a rough man kicked down the warehouse door and found her.
Maddy remembered how scared she was to see a tall, muscular man with a giant hammer in his hand.
She was sure she was going to be killed, but then the man crouched down in front of her and asked the stupidest question, "Yo, what are you doing here?"
Since then, for some reason, Jack decided to take her in and take care of her. She didn’t understand why, certainly not because he wanted her body because at that time she was still very young and her body was very thin, Jack also never told her to work other than cleaning the place where they lived and occasionally cooking when he could come home which was very rare.
On the contrary, Jack was the one who gave her money in the form of points that could be exchanged for food, clothes, medicines, and miscellaneous at a shop specifically provided for soldiers.
Even now, Jack still treated her the same as before, only sometimes he teased her by calling her Babe, Sweety, or something like that, but other than that, he never took advantage of her, therefore she didn’t understand why Jack had been keeping her by his side all this time, though she never complains about it, in fact, she was happy.
Suddenly he heard a ’ping’ sound from her pocket, Maddy took long strides toward the nearest bench then put her bag on the bench and took out her cell phone. Turned out to be a message from Jack asking her to buy a pack of cigarettes on the way home.
Maddy gritted her teeth as she held back the anger that boiling inside her. She felt helpless at how insensitive this man was, but then again, Jack had always been like that.
"No cigarettes for you, old man!" she snapped at the innocent cell phone before tucking it back into her pants. Just then out of the corner of her eye, she noticed someone watching her from across the street.
Her eyes reflexively fell on the mysterious man across the street, she couldn’t see his face behind his hood and face mask, but somehow he looked very familiar. The man took off his face mask and then lifted his head. At that moment his whole face became visible to Maddy.
Maddy’s eyes widened, she dropped all her stuff and ran across the street, almost getting hit by several cars, the sound of horns was heard by several annoyed drivers but Maddy didn’t care.
Her eyes searched for the figure then she saw him walking away and then stopping in front of a narrow alley as if waiting for her. Maddy was relieved that the man didn’t leave, she took a deep breath to calm herself then looked left and right to make sure no one was following her.
Maddy raised her hands to apologize to the annoyed drivers and then quickly crossed the street with her head down letting her face hidden behind her hair.
She walked quickly towards the alley where the man was but when she arrived the figure had disappeared.
Maddy frowned as she peered into the dark alley wondering if she was inside, she hesitated for a few seconds before stepping into the alley while pulling out a small gun from her waist, a small gun filled with powerful energy to kill people in one shot.
Jack gave the gun a long time ago so that Maddy could defend herself if she was in danger. The Dark Age War brought out the worst in human nature and Jack couldn’t always protect her because of his profession as an Ultima infantry soldier, that’s why he taught Maddy how to defend herself, even though she wouldn’t be as strong as a woman’s soldier or capable as a hunter, but at least she wouldn’t be helpless.
Maddy took a deep breath, then pointed the gun firmly in front of her while entering the alley.
"You had learned to protect yourself, huh?" A voice suddenly came from behind.
Maddy turned around swiftly and pointed the muzzle of her gun at the source of the voice, "Show yourself!"
The man lowered the hood of his jacket then a middle-aged man with short black hair in a military style with a strong jaw and dark green eyes staring at her sharply.
"You’ve grown up, Maddeline," his voice was husky and deep, but his eyes were full of warmth.
Maddy immediately lowered her gun, her lips trembling as she stared at him in disbelief, "You... you’re alive – You’re really alive!" her voice choked.
"Hey Maddy," his expression softened.
"Samuel!" Maddy covered her mouth in shock.
