Chapter 209: Chapter 209 Crystal Gun
“It’s useless, Chen Ke. The fifth underground level of this hospital can only be accessed through the elevator, and I control the elevator,” Jiu Lin’s voice came out of the speaker.
Chen Ke knew she was right; Sam had just checked the office, and there was no device on this level to control the elevator.
He had thought about climbing up the elevator cable, but then he thought, if Jiu Lin started the elevator while they were climbing, he and Sam would be crushed without a doubt.
“What does this crazy woman want? Does she want to turn us into those monsters?” Sam angrily said.
“You’re only half right, Sam,” Chen Ke shook his head.
“What is it? What else could she want from us?” Sam asked.
“Like Ying Baiyi, she wants to find the singularity where time entangles, and we are her opportunity…” Chen Ke answered.
“I see… Carrier, Ying Baiyi wants to find the subway, and she wants to turn us into carriers through experiments…” Sam said.
“That’s right… That’s what I think; she can survive not because she is stronger than anyone, but because she knows more than anyone. The fear of the unknown is immense, and as long as you control enough knowledge, you can lessen that terror,” Chen Ke said.
“She seems not to be afraid of those monsters because she made them?” Sam asked.
“I don’t think she created these monsters, but she should understand how such things come about, and also knows how to create them…” Chen Ke shook his head.
“You mean the research institute…?” Sam asked.
“Yes, just look at this world. I don’t believe a mad scientist could destroy the whole world alone, but if it’s a group of mad scientists… then it’s hard to say,” Chen Ke said.
“That makes sense… Those things didn’t just appear out of nowhere… They just leaked out of the research institute…” Sam pondered.
“Anyway, it’s over here. Let them fend for themselves; we can’t save the world, but we can try to save ourselves,” Chen Ke looked at Sam.
“You’re right, as long as we can find a way back,” Sam said.
“First, let’s think about how to get up. My plan is this: I’ll uncover the top of the elevator, place them all on this level, then shoot their limbs off, and we jump down,” Chen Ke said.
“That doesn’t sound like a good plan…” Sam pursed his lips.
“It’s the only plan, Sam. Do you remember what Jiu Lin said? ‘Don’t be afraid,'” Chen Ke said.
Sam looked at Chen Ke, gripped the gun tightly, and knew that those monsters fed on fear to replicate themselves, and if they became frightened, the monsters would multiply exponentially.
“Hang in there, Sam, there won’t be many of those things below, and they might be weaker than the ones flying above. As long as we can withstand the pressure, draw them all up, then close the elevator doors, we’ll be safe,” Chen Ke reassured.
“Okay… okay… I’ll try,” Sam moved his limbs, forcing himself to withstand the fear inside.
Chen Ke was right, his plan was scientific; the creatures below were limited in number. Drawing them up and then shooting their limbs off would allow them to go down to confront that female doctor and safely leave by the elevator…
Chen Ke tilted his head, signaling Sam to open the top cover of the elevator.
Sam held his breath, slung the gun over his back, jumped down the elevator shaft, and grasped the handle of the top cover.
Chen Ke held up his gun, aimed at the cover, and gestured to Sam.
“3, 2…” he slowly changed gestures.
“1!”
Sam turned the handle forcefully and pulled open the lid. Just as a small gap had opened, the creatures inside the elevator couldn’t wait to stick out their claws. In his urgency, Sam stomped on the lid with his foot, fearing the creatures would crawl out.
“Turn it over, Sam! Jump!” Chen Ke shouted.
Gritting his teeth, Sam stomped on the cover and leapt out of the elevator shaft, and Chen Ke grabbed his arm and pulled him out.
The monsters followed closely behind, scrambling to pour out through the opening at the top of the elevator.
As Chen Ke backed away, he shot his gun at the unformed bird-like creatures, and white fluid spurted out from them.
He noticed that the bodies of these creatures had not yet turned to wax and that human features could still be discerned on their faces, only a thin white layer was beginning to form on their skin.
Sam turned around and raised his M14 towards the monsters.
Chen Ke grabbed the barrel of his gun and said, “Step back, let them all come out.”
Sam knew what Chen Ke was planning, but while it was easy to say, it was hard to do with the enemy close at hand and his fingers itching to pull the trigger.
“Save the bullets, Sam. Aim for their legs as much as possible, they won’t regenerate,” Chen Ke yelled, his voice had to overpower the sound of the M14.
These monsters didn’t have the ability to regenerate, or perhaps they did, but it was weak. At the very least, they couldn’t regenerate visibly fast. Breaking their legs restricted their mobility, providing a chance to escape.
“Got it!” Sam unloaded his magazine, pocketed it, and loaded a new one, aiming and firing at the approaching monsters.
Semi-automatic firearms weren’t easy for covering fire, therefore, accuracy was crucial. Yet, as a ranger, Sam managed to maintain a good aim under high pressure.
Chen Ke and Sam shot at the charging monsters together. They deliberately staggered their firing times so when one needed to reload, the other could continue shooting.
Under the barrage of bullets, the monsters fell one after another; white fluid mixed with red blood splattered across the walls and floors.
Chen Ke counted, there were about eight or nine of them. He activated “Spiritual Vision,” scanned the upper and lower floors, and after confirming all the monsters were on this floor, he and Sam stepped over the creatures and jumped down from the top of the elevator.
“Boom.”

As soon as Sam jumped into the elevator, he hurriedly closed the lid above.
“Good, she’s out of moves now. Let’s see what she is really up to,” Chen Ke said.
The two men, carrying their M14s, swaggered up to the office door, which was, of course, locked.
“It seems I underestimated you, Chen Ke and Sam. I’ll remember you,” Jiu Lin’s disdainful voice came from inside.
“No matter what you intend to do, attacking us was your biggest mistake,” Chen Ke replied through the door.
“Aaaaah! You crazy woman, today I’m going to kill you!” Sam roared as he kicked the door, knocking the lock off immediately, and wood splinters flew everywhere, with a chunk of the doorframe falling off.
He desperately needed that kick to vent the frustration and fear that had been building inside him.
As soon as the door was kicked open, Chen Ke saw Jiu Lin standing at the far end of the office, her right hand emitting a blue glow, condensing into an icicle-like object. Whatever was in her hand, Chen Ke felt it was definitely dangerous.
“Sam! Get down!” Chen Ke shouted and kicked Sam’s waist, propelling him two meters away.
Simultaneously, the icicle Jiu Lin had thrown also flew out. The blue crystalline icicle was like a long spear, and it nailed itself into the wall outside the door.
