Chapter 55: 55. Queen Cobra

I coughed awkwardly, scratching the back of my head as the heat of the situation started to make me feel uneasy. "See, let me explain..."

The group wasn’t having any of it. One of the boys from the back stepped forward, his face a mask of irritation. "What can you possibly explain?!"

A voice from behind added fuel to the fire. "There were for us to get points from, not for you!"

I barely had a chance to speak before another girl screamed, "Yeah, he’s a kill-stealer!! He should be punished!"

I sighed inwardly, bracing for the inevitable chaos.

Another voice joined in, egging the mob on. "Yeah! He should be—"

And then, to my surprise, the same boy with the square face—the one I’d already threatened—stepped up again. He had a grimace on his face as he declared, "Guys, he must be punished. He just stole all of our points. Any ideas?"

The crowd seemed to grow restless, murmurs rippling through the group. Some were glaring at me, others were pointing accusing fingers, but the voices were all the same:

Punish. Punish. Punish.

Then, one of the girls—she had a look of determination that could’ve made a general pause in his tracks—screamed. "He should accompany me at night!!"

Everything went deathly quiet. A tension built up in the air as all eyes turned to me, then back to her. The boys looked at me with suspicion, while the girls locked their eyes on her, like they were plotting something more sinister than any punishment.

She said it with a completely straight face, no hesitation, as though it were the most natural thing in the world.

I shuffled awkwardly, taking a few steps back, feeling the heat rise in my face. But then, as if by some divine intervention, I jolted upright.

There it was, the opportunity to salvage my dignity... or at least avoid whatever else they had in mind for me.

I looked at the girl—who was, to be fair, a decent height and quite beautiful, with rich brunette hair and eyes the color of cerulean seas.

’Not a bad night, I guess,’ I thought to myself, instantly feeling like I was about to dig myself into a hole.

Before I could second guess myself, the boy with the square face threw a glance at the girl that was hard to miss.

He looked at her with an expression of both confusion and disbelief—like he couldn’t quite fathom what was happening here.

Jealousy was practically radiating off him. His face was a shade paler than it had been a moment ago.

The tension thickened as I stood there, my mind racing for a way out. But just then, I couldn’t help myself.

I wiped away the mock-innocent expression and got up with exaggerated teary eyes. I walked right up to her and, much to everyone’s surprise, took her hand with a dramatic flourish.

"I’ll accept the punishment," I declared, my voice almost too serious for the moment.

She looked at me, her eyes lighting up in amusement as she smiled softly. For a brief, fleeting second, I could’ve sworn there was something else in her gaze... but before I could place it, she squeezed my hand.

"Glad to see you’re taking responsibility," she said, her voice tinged with playful approval.

But, just as the awkwardness started to peak, Freya’s voice rang out like a hammer striking the ground.

"Enough!!!"

The force of her command quieted the group instantly. I turned my head to look at her, surprised to see her standing there with her usual calm but undeniably commanding presence. She stepped forward, her gaze now locked on the group, as if daring anyone to challenge her.

"I know," she began, her voice calm but firm, "he killed every monster out here, but we can’t blame him for that. We’ve been preparing for so long. What was he supposed to do in the meantime, let the serpents bite him while we figured it out?"

Her logic settled over the group like a blanket. They lowered their heads, some muttering under their breath, while others glanced at each other uncertainly.

Damn. She had a way of diffusing the situation, turning the tide effortlessly in her favor. Her presence was magnetic, like a natural leader who had been born to command.

I couldn’t help but think, Freya could be a damn good leader.

But of course, the square-faced boy wasn’t one to give up easily. He still had a few complaints left in him.

"But Miss Freya," he said, speaking more carefully now, "What should we do next? We’re kind of stuck here."

He looked at me again, his eyes narrowing. "Just like he said earlier, finding another place would waste too much time. We need to move."

Freya maintained that stern expression as she surveyed the group. "Don’t worry. There must be more of these monsters around. We’ll find them. I’m confident."

I nodded silently from the side, still processing what just happened.

Then, almost like an afterthought, I remembered something important. "Ah, Freya, what about my punishment?" I asked, unable to resist the playful grin that crept up on me.

She turned her gaze on me, narrowing her eyes as if to gauge my sincerity. "Do you want a punishment? Because if you do, I could always cut your arms off."

I immediately made a zipping motion over my mouth, my face going pale. "Nope. No punishment. No need!" I spun around on my heels, walking briskly away from the group, not daring to look back.

Not because I feared Freya’s threat.

But because... well, she could probably do it if she wanted to.

’And if she did...I would retaliate and.... Losing a heroine so early won’t be good for my plans.’

The crowd seemed to shift uneasily behind me, a few chuckles and nervous whispers rippling through the group, but I didn’t dare look over my shoulder.

The tension of the moment had been broken. But I couldn’t help but think, maybe I should lay low for a while and stay out of trouble... just a bit.

...

To get away from the trouble and move forward, I spotted a narrow gap splitting the mountain’s edge. It wasn’t much of an obstacle—just a small chasm that could easily be crossed with a simple jump.

I squinted my eyes, scanning the other side for any signs of danger, any lurking monsters or traps. But... nothing. Even the system didn’t chime in with a notification.

With an almost careless air, I slipped my hand into my pocket, the other still gripping the short sword.

Blood still dripped from my uniform, staining the fabric as I made my way toward the gap. With a single, practiced step, I leaped across the chasm, effortlessly clearing it.

But the moment my feet touched solid ground—

SWOOSH!

A serpent shot out of the gap with terrifying speed, its fangs gleaming as it lunged at me, aiming to swallow me whole.

My danger senses screamed. My mana surged instinctively, and I muttered under my breath, "[Flash Speed]!"

In the blink of an eye, my leg barely grazed the serpent’s fangs, each one easily half my size, as I blurred past it.

I didn’t look back but instead surged toward the rest of the group. My heart pounded in my chest, and panic coursed through me.

I shouted at the top of my lungs, "Run, everybody!!!!"

I knew this wasn’t a creature any of them could take on, and the system’s notifications made that crystal clear.

« Queen Cobra »

Type: Serpent

The moment I saw the notification, I couldn’t help but think, ’Was that a slander on my boii King Cobra?’

Cause mind you, there was no such thing in the animal kingdom as Queen Cobra.

Then I remembered this wasn’t Earth, and that I’m stupid.

A wide, intimidating hood adorned its head, and its chiseled scales shimmered with a brown hue, catching the light.

But it wasn’t just its appearance that struck into me—it was the pure fury emanating from its eyes, locked onto me with murderous intent.

The group behind me gasped, the sound of their shock ringing in my ears. I could sense the tension building in the air.

The creature’s movements were deliberate, lethal, and just like the Echo Drake, I felt an overwhelming urge to fight cause this bastard was also my equal.

Unlike the time before this time, I had a weapon in my hand, and I was more than ready to put it to good use.

Before I could strike, however, a surge of energy hit me from behind.

"[Stilling Touch]!"

"[Binding Breath]!"

The serpent’s movements immediately slowed, like it was wading through thick mud. It felt sluggish, its once-fluid motions becoming erratic and uncoordinated.

I whipped around to see Freya standing with her hands extended forward, a calm but intense expression on her face.

The element of Stillness.

But another question lingered in my mind.

’The hell does "Stilling Touch" even mean? She didn’t touch anything!!!’

I was about to get lost in my own thoughts when I caught myself. This wasn’t the time to question anything.

As much as I wanted to fight alone and embrace the raw sensation of battle—especially with this sword in my hand, I couldn’t ignore the bigger picture.

I couldn’t be like Leon. He needed to understand that teamwork was the key, not solitary victories.

I glanced at Freya, giving her a thumbs up, my thoughts veering from the battle for just a second.

’Freya, people should depend on each other and help each other... Don’t forget that. Engrave this in your heart and make sure you circulate this motto like a cult.’

With that thought in mind, I steeled myself. It was time to unleash my abilities.

"[Thousand Slash]!" I shouted, my mana surging through my body as I focused on the cobra before me.

"[Indigo Bloom]!"

The air around me seemed to crackle as I surged forward, closing the distance in a blur. I reached the serpent’s hood, slashing in a horizontal arc with all my strength.

Amethyst light glowed from the blade as I struck, leaving deep gashes in its hood. The cobra hissed in pain, its body writhing and flailing violently.

It slammed its tail against the ground, sending shockwaves through the rocky earth beneath us, causing cracks to form like spider webs.

But the pain wasn’t over for the beast. As the wound I’d inflicted began to bloom with dark purple flowers, I felt the pressure build.

BOOM!

The explosion of energy was deafening, sending petals flying through the air and piercing the serpent’s body.

The creature screeched in agony, its movements growing more erratic as it staggered back, struggling to regain its footing.

Even under Freya’s power, the monster’s rage didn’t subside. It turned toward her with a renewed fury, its eyes glinting with malice. Before I could react, it moved again.

It was too fast. The serpent blurred, and in an instant, it was right behind me. My heart skipped a beat as I felt the shift in the air—then, before I could dodge, its tail slammed into my back with terrifying force.

SMASH!

The impact was enough to send me crashing into the rocky ground, splintering the earth beneath me.

The world spun, and I gasped for breath as my chest heaved, struggling to stay conscious. I could taste the iron tang of blood in my mouth, and water spewed from my lips as I coughed violently.

I struggled to push myself up, but the force of the blow left me disoriented, my vision blurry. Pain shot through my ribs, but I couldn’t afford to fall now.

The cobra hissed, preparing for its next move, but for the moment, all I could do was scramble to regain my bearings. I had to stand up. I had to— freewebnσvel.cѳm

"Freya!" I gasped, my voice barely a whisper, my body trembling as I forced myself to push against the ground.
