Chapter 120: Memory Fragments

Right after his system lifted one of the seals, memory fragments flashed past like projections on the slideshow.

In the fragments of his memory, he saw his father carrying him and being chased by some powerful non-human creatures.

He could not tell who they were or what race they belonged to because their faces were shrouded in shadows. freeweɓnovel.cѳm

"You, lowly human! How dare you trick our princess and taint her purity!" The leader of the group roared angrily.

"I didn’t trick her. We love each other." Ren’s father answered as he kept trying to escape from them.

Even though he was powerful, he didn’t fight them because it would endanger his son.

"Love each other? Don’t make me laugh, human! You must have used dirty methods, right?" the leader sneered. "You must have known beforehand who our princess was and proceeded to deceive her for your own benefit. Just admit it, human!"

"I didn’t know who she was before we fell in love. Our marriage was built purely on love, not ulterior motives." Ren’s father denied their accusations firmly.

When he met his wife, he really had no idea who she was.

At that time, she was heavily injured and unconscious near his home. As he took care of her, love blossomed in their hearts.

Long story short, they got married a year after that.

"Nonsense!" the leader snapped, "We are from a mighty race. It’s impossible for our princess to fall in love with a lowly human. Speak! What kind of dirty tricks have you used on our princess."

Ren’s father didn’t respond and gritted his teeth because whatever he said would definitely be considered a lie by them.

’Just because you come from a mighty race doesn’t give you the right to look down on us,’

He despised the hierarchical system in this world where not all races were equal.

And what he hated the most was that the human race was one of the middle-class races.

This was the reason why his wife’s family was hunting them down because it would bring shame upon their prestigious lineage if everyone learned about Ren’s existence.

The scene began to blur, like ripples distorting the surface of a pond. The chase and shouts faded away, replaced by a quieter, more peaceful setting.

This time, the scene focused on Ren’s life as he lived with his father in Verneau Town.

Despite his father’s constant smile, he always felt guilty whenever he saw Ren because he failed to protect Ren’s mother and provide Ren with the happy life he deserved.

Of course, Ren could not understand anything at that time because he was only a kid. Now that he was no longer a kid, he could feel the sadness and guilt behind his father’s gentle smile.

After about four minutes, the memory fragment vanished, returning him to reality.

"Again, with the lowly human insult. Just what is my mother’s origin?" Ren still didn’t know the origin of his mother.

All he knew was that his mother was a princess and she came from an elite race.

Other than that, he knew nothing because the fragments of his memories shown were not many.

[Host, maybe your mother is from the Phoenix race.]

’What makes you think like that?’

He asked.

[Just guessing.]

The corner of his lips twitched.

’But he said my mother was a princess. Does that mean my mother is from a royal family?’

A question popped up in his mind.

’But isn’t there no magical beast kingdom on this continent? Does that mean my mother and her family are not from the Vlizica continent? Then what about my father’s family?’

The more he thought about his family, the more questions came to his mind.

’My family is full of mystery.’

As he let out a deep sigh, the sound of Scarlett opening the door echoed in his ears.

She didn’t lie on the bed; instead, she lay on top of him.

"Ren, I’m tired." She reviewed reports right after arriving at his house, so she was exhausted because her work had increased drastically.

"Thank you for the hard work." He could not say anything except that because he could not help her in this case.

Unlike usual, she didn’t say anything after lying in his arms.

Her mind and body were exhausted, so she didn’t have the energy to talk to him.

Of course, Ren was fine with this.

He knew how hard it was to be a city mistress, so he didn’t say anything either and only caressed her hair gently, showering her with love.

After several minutes, Scarlett could not resist her sleepiness.

She lay on the bed before finally resting her head on his right arm. "Goodnight, Ren."

He kissed her forehead softly and spoke, "Goodnight, my love."

She suddenly opened her eyes and looked at him.

"Hmm? What’s wrong?" he inquired.

Instead of answering his question, she cupped his face and kissed his lips.

She liked what he did and said, so she decided to return the affection with a kiss.

"Goodnight, Ren." She smiled happily after breaking the kiss.

"Goodnight." He said as he smiled.

Shortly after that, the duo fell asleep.

----

The following morning, Scarlett gathered her people in the city square. She said she would share the beast cores they collected yesterday with them.

The non-awakeners could sell their beast cores to her if they didn’t want them, and her subordinates would buy them at a high price.

Her people were thrilled by the good news, especially the ordinary people because they didn’t need beast cores and had much less money than awakeners.

Their houses were razed to the ground and their plantations were destroyed, so they needed money more than beast cores because they had no income.

After delivering the announcement, Scarlett headed to her temporary office, a large tent.

As Scarlett was working hard, Ren and Liam were heading to the outskirts. They had nothing to do, so they decided to help the citizens collect stones and wood.

"Liam, how is your house?" Ren asked curiously.

"I’m lucky. My house is fine. Only the backyard and front yard are destroyed." Liam answered, "What about yours?"

"The first floor is fine, but the second floor is completely destroyed." He said he needed to cover his house with tarpaulin to keep the cold air out.

"Well, at least your house is still habitable." Liam had checked the condition of the residents’ houses, so it could be said that Ren was also lucky.

"You are right." Ren responded.

"Ren..."

"Ren..."

"Ren..."

Every time the citizens saw him, they greeted him with a smile because he was their hero.

"You are popular now, Ren." Liam uttered.

"Hmm? Haven’t I always been popular from the start?" Ren said as he smirked.

"Damn you, Ren!" Liam pretended to be angry.

"Haha." Ren laughed. "Don’t worry. You will also be famous if you keep hanging out with me."

"No, thank you." Liam refused instantly.

As they were getting closer to their destination, the sounds of falling trees and chatters entered their ears.

Like before, the citizens greeted Ren when they saw him.

Some of them even stopped working just to greet him because everyone regarded him as their hero.

"Colonel Aidan!" Liam shouted as he waved his hands.

Colonel Aidan immediately approached them when he caught sight of them.

"What are you doing here?" Colonel Aidan asked as he smiled.

"We want to help you and the others." Liam responded.

"Oh! Then please join the tree-cutting group since most of them are tired." Colonel Aidan uttered.

Liam and Ren nodded their heads before finally following Colonel Aidan to the tree-cutting group.

"Everyone, Ren and Liam will join this group." Colonel Aidan uttered.

"Welcome to the tree-cutting group, Ren."

"Welcome to the tree-cutting group, Liam."

The citizens welcomed them immediately.

"Alright. I will return now." After saying that, Colonel Aidan left.

"Ren, Ace, this is your Axe." A red-haired man approached them with two axes in his hands.

Right after he grabbed the axe, Liam said, "Ren, how about we have a competition in cutting down trees? Whoever cuts down twenty trees first is the winner."

The citizens were startled.

’Competition?’

They immediately shifted their gaze from Liam to Ren, waiting for his answer.

"Sure." Ren accepted it instantly.

The eyes of the residents suddenly shone.

Their hero would have a tree chopping competition with Liam, so they could not wait to see his performance.

A green-haired man rose to his feet and approached them. "I will be the referee."

"Sure." Ren and Liam responded in unison.

The green-haired man suddenly acted like a professional referee when they agreed instantly, causing some citizens to laugh and chuckle.

"Three...two...one...start." The green-haired man shouted.

Liam wasted no time and immediately swung his axe.

Even though he fought with his bare hands, he could chop down trees easily as if an axe were his main weapon.

Ren, who saw Liam working hard to cut down the trees, smiled and shook his head.

’Not bad, Liam. But you are still too slow.’

He retrieved a sword from his space ring and swung it.

The next second, the sound of more than twenty trees falling to the ground filled the air.

"I won, Liam." Ren said calmly.

Liam stopped cutting trees and looked at Ren.

’A sword?’

He saw a sword in Ren’s right hand.

"That’s not fair, Ren." Liam roared. "Don’t use any skill or magic. And cut down the trees with an axe, not a sword."

"You didn’t say it earlier." Ren responded.

"You are cheating. I do not acknowledge your victory." Liam stated.

"Haha." The citizens laughed when they saw Liam’s reactions.
