Chapter 61: Light at the end of the tunnel

Looking at the list of five.... Four skills, Lumen went into deep thought contemplating which skill would be best for him in his current situation.

He didn’t even consider the fifth option the system gave him as a part of the list, clearly the system was in the mood for jokes with Lumen yet he wasn’t amused.

The Concussive Strike skill looked relatively simple when reading through the description - channel his body’s strength towards the tip of his spear in order to deal a devastating and powerful blow to the target.

But he also contemplated the power that he would actually achieve through this skill. The description of it didn’t go into any specifics on the actual damage it would cause, causing him to consider whether it would even be able to match up with his other spear skills like his Mana reinforcement or fire infusion skills.

If it turned out that it didn’t even deal damage equal to those then the skill would only be useful in scenarios where he couldn’t use his mana. This had rarely, if at all, happened to him through his conquest of the dungeon so far, so the skill would most likely just be rotting away on his status screen, left unused.

He had no intention of choosing a skill that he may not even use for a good while, so he no longer considered it.

This left him with the three other skills, and with a clear winner between the three of them, it was obvious which skill Lumen chose in the end.

[New skill acquired!]

[1. Shadow Blink (Rare) - Shadow Blink is an ancient variant of the original spatial spell used by spatial mages since the beginning of time. Allows for the mage to teleport to any dark or shadowed spaces around them within a range starting at 15 metres at level 1. Shadow Blink does not require the use of any external magic tools or equipment and only requires a basic affinity with the darkness element to use, but the skill’s level can be upgraded through constant use, increasing its range. Mana cost: 300 MP.]

Out of the five, he chose this skill mainly because it offered him a form of instant teleportation. Considering his recent fights where he hadn’t been able to dodge or react in time to the attacks of his enemies, he was in desperate need of a skill that allowed him to dodge or catch enemies off guard. This Shadow Blink skill was perfect for that, especially in the dungeon.

The second reason he chose the skill was that it was attuned to the darkness element, and inside his current darkness mana rich cave environment he had a feeling that the efficacy of his skill would be increased when he used it in such a place.

Overall, this skill would stay as one of his most useful skills for the foreseeable future, especially considering that it’s range increased as the skill levelled up.

With his skill selection settled, it was time for him to make his way to the other side of the never ending hallway he had been exploring for hours before he came across the Elite wolf.

His new level of 20 brought with it new stats and a new feeling to Lumen, as if his range of perception had actually doubled in size when he reached level 20. His intuition told him this was no coincidence and suspected the massive increases would continue in the future higher levels reached.

However one thing he didn’t expect came at the same moment his range of perception had doubled. With his new range of a little over a kilometre, he could barely sense that the hallway ended in around 950 metres or so. But what he also detected at the end of the tunnel gave him a foreboding feeling. He sensed something living waiting for him on the other end.

But this being didn’t give him any sense of hostility, nor any sense of power at all for that matter.

He didn’t sense a single shred of mana or strength from the being waiting for him on the other end of the hallway. Normally he would be unconcerned with this, but the fact that he was so deep in the dungeon where level 20+ Rabid wolves were common, was a tell-tale sign that something wasn’t right.

But no matter what, he had to continue onwards. He was going to continue onwards whether the foreboding feeling was there or not.

’Hopefully.... It will be something useful, maybe even exactly what I have been looking for the whole time I’ve been down here...’

Lumen continued his leisurely walk down the remaining stretch of hallway, and at his steady and relaxed pace it took him a little over 10 minutes to reach the other end.

When he reached the other end, nothing but darkness filled his vision as it took a couple dozen seconds for his eyes to adjust to the lack of light, partially revealing the room in front of him.

The cavern revealed at the end of the hallway was quite a bit smaller than the countless other caverns he had traversed through to reach this place. The ceiling only reached a total height of 15 metres in this one, with a total diameter of 100 metres from the limited area he could see.

However the moment his eyes met the eyes peering back at him from the middle of the middle of the room, all of his attention and focus was taken away from the environment around him.

Those dark yellow, piercing eyes contrasted greatly with the surrounding near pitch black environment. And when Lumen moved his eyes away from it’s eyes to it’s body, he knew this was the being that gave him the foreboding feeling.

In trepidation, he used his trusted Inspect skill that had never failed him since he entered the tutorial.

[Shadow Wolf - ?]

However it seemed that it was at this moment that the skill would fail him.

Lumen didn’t even notice the three levels he had just gained in his Inspect skill.

He didn’t need the information from the system to tell him that this was the boss of the dungeon.
