Chapter 45 - A Lady's Anger Can Turn Words Into A Sharp Dagger To Pierce Your Heart

Lady Karina nearly squashed the parchment in her hand, but she set it aside instead.

"The world I knew was filled with peace and beautiful days," Lady Karina uttered almost bitterly. "And the things you have done... you destroyed my heaven, Orpheus. You murdered... and you destroyed all that I knew."

And there it was again.

That sharp jab he'd felt in his chest before had returned. He was never a man who was remorseful about the things he'd done, yet hearing of his actions from Lady Karina had come bearing down on him like a blade to his neck.

"How could you possibly expect me to share my life with a man who took everything from me that was dear and wonderful?" She asked, her words holding pain, grief, and anger.

Orpheus was far from redemption and he knew it.

The world he knew was bloodshed and destruction.

He came away from the lancet window, emitting a heavy sigh.

Crossing his arms over his chest, he paced about thoughtfully.

"This life of terror and war is all I have known," Orpheus answered. "There has never been any other way."

"There are other ways in my world." She remarked, still not pleased with his stance. "I am not implying that I agree but if we were to marry, then you would become a part of my world, but I do not want to be part of yours."

A second jab.

What else could he expect?

His world was a constant battlefield after all.

"Your world is filled with blood and fear and I refuse to live my life that way," she added.

Orpheus stopped his pacing and turned to look at her.

"This is who I always have been, my lady," he replied with subtle sternness. "It is something you must come to accept."

"I would die before doing so," she bit back, refusing to bend and confirm to the harsh normalities of his world. "I will not live in Hell as demons do."

Orpheus fell silent.

Somehow his pacing ended up at the desk and he reached out, taking her soft hands within his own.

He studied her small fingers and inspected the nails, running his calloused fingers over her skin simply to feel the texture, which was foreign to a man like him.

She could feel his warmth and cold at the same time as he held her hands tightly.

"There are ambitions of mine left unfulfilled," he told her. "And I cannot abandon any of them, even if it is for you."

"And I have never demanded for you to abandon them."

While that was true, Orpheus still looked at her as if her statement had pierced him.

But what right did he have to feel hurt?

After a moment, he brought her hands to his lips. He kissed them so tenderly as if they were more fragile than a newborn, as if he was afraid to brush them.

It made her cheeks flush, but she did not pull her hands away.

"Is there nothing I can say or do to earn your acceptance?" Orpheus questioned, his lips brushing over her skin.

They felt against her flesh like firebrands.

She couldn't deny that the man had his charming way of making her forget everything in the moment, of draining her thoughts and from her mind until she was limp and irrational.

Impulsively, she placed her hand on his hollow cheek—the first time she had ever voluntarily touched him tenderly.

And Orpheus closed his eyes tightly from the warm, soft sensation against his skin. He wanted to savour the feeling, wishing it would never be lost on him.

Right now, he was unguarded and so open that she could see right through him.

Lady Karina's eyes couldn't resist softening when he leaned into her touch, greedily seeking more.

Why was Orpheus Van Merikh such a brute in the first place?

Was it truly because of his upbringing?

Or was it the darkness beneath his eyes that surfaced now and then that made him commit the terrible crimes that he did?

She didn't know what to make of it, but she certainly wanted to find out more about him.

Somehow, she didn't want to believe that he was completely the awful villain he was by choice.

Or was that just her way of coping with the situation?

"I have heard tales that you are an unkind beast with no mercy to show and it would be easy to believe that if I accepted the rumours of your cruelty," Lady Karina repeated the same words she had spoken to him on the day of the invasion.

His eyes flickered open, gazing upon her with bewilderment and she smiled at his wonder.

"But I believe there is mercy in every man, Orpheus, even you," she said, brushing her thumb over his high cheekbone. "I believe there is good in you and it is to that man that I would agree to marriage. But to the other man, I must refuse."

Orpheus' dual-coloured eyes glimmered, not understanding her.

"What are you implying, my lady?"

Lady Karina shook her head. "I myself do not know, but all I know is that your proposal has me...conflicted and at my wit's end."

Orpheus sighed yet again, feeling hopeless for the first time in his life and unsure of what more to say.

He kissed the back of her hands and her wrists, where she could feel his inner fire sending sparks through her.

And then, it wasn't long before he pulled her into an almost crushing embrace and slanted a fiery kiss over her soft lips.

This time, Lady Karina did not resist and instead welcomed it.

She could feel how desperately he wanted her from the way his arms engulfed her. The way his lips claimed hers, beckoning her to wrap her arms around his neck, which she did.

Gods above, it felt so wrong yet right at the same time.

Heat manifested between their bodies as their lips melded together, tasting the depths of each other's desires in that moment.

And unexpectedly, a small muffled moan escaped Lady Karina.

The sweet sound only drove Orpheus far crazier than he already was.

And it took every ounce of his will to summon his control to break the kiss before he delved any further.

He nearly left her breathless, panting now that her lips were swollen and moist.

And when he pulled back, he looked her in the eye.

"Would you truly give it more consideration if I returned your father to Moonveil?"
