Chapter 55 - It Is Only The Beginning After All

Deciding to follow through with her motives, Lady Karina dressed herself in a plain black dress with a black woollen coat featuring a hood that she pulled over her head.

Knowing every inch of Moonveil as well as she did, she knew where the blindspots were and where candlelight from the chandeliers or wall sconces failed to touch.

It had been many weeks since she last entered the beast sanctuary; hence, she knew how urgently the creatures would need her attention.

However, moving stealthily out of her chambers was no easy task.

The Van Merikh knights were always on high alert, and that left Lady Karina with only a gap of a few seconds to slip out when the knights were switching their patrol shifts.

Caelum and Gilghard were patrolling the hallway outside her chambers so she had to wait nearly half an hour before they descended the steps into the third floor to switch with two other knights.

Lady Karina, although already feeling the cold seeping into her skin, decided to abandon her shoes so that her steps would be nearly soundless against the stone floors.

She managed to pass through to the third floor, though it was not without any risks.

She was grateful she had the shadows to move in, but that wouldn't be as effective considering the Van Merikh knights were raw killers who could probably even sense if a feather settled onto a surface of water.

Lady Karina could hear Lyall's voice as he came up the stairs to the fourth floor, and she had just barely passed by him, hiding herself behind a stack of empty crates that were left at the bottom of the stairs for the upcoming harvest.

The wood from the crates creaked when she set her hand on one of them, making her recoil back slowly in fear that the man might have heard her.

Naturally, the man didn't simply continue up the stairs. He paused briefly and glanced over his shoulder, searching for any movement behind the crates.

Although it was pitch black behind the crates, there was an unmistakable figure in the dark, well at least the hood of it.

The lady wasn't accustomed to sneaking around, so no doubt her stealth skills were hardly efficient.

Normally Lyall would intercept the suspicious figure immediately, but considering they must have come down from the fourth floor where only one resident other than the empty servant's quarters lay, it could have only been that person.

'Why is the lady out of her chambers and sneaking about like a thief in the night?' Lyall thought to himself. 'She would be madly out of her mind if she's considering escaping.'

There was simply no other explanation for her actions.

However, the man simply shook his head and turned back up the stairs.

'If that is her intention, she won't manage to pass beyond the third floor either way.' He shook his head. 'Not with Orpheus sleeping in the solar that is. He'll have his hands on her before she even makes it past the room.'

Under normal circumstances, Lyall would have seized her and dragged her to his liege for punishment.

However, after Orpheus staked his claim on the lady at the dinner table and when he crushed Hendrix's heart with his bare hands, Lyall had no desire to meet his end the same way.

Lady Karina was not to be touched and so he wouldn't touch even a single strand of hair on her head.

The lady, on the other hand, breathed a sigh of relief when Lyall was out of sight, bringing a hand to her chest to calm her racing heart.

If the man had found her, he would have crushed her neck where she stood and taken her corpse straight to his liege.

Or would he?

She had no time for silly thoughts.

She shook her head and carefully made her way down to the second floor, where the solar was.

That was her destination.

To her surprise, the solar was completely empty when she peeked her head through the small gap of the door that was slightly ajar.

It was risky, considering there were chambers on this floor that were occupied by the Van Merikh knights.

She would have expected at least one of them to have taken up their sleeping arrangements in the solar.

Perhaps luck was on her side.

Why question the convenience?

Lady Karina made her way inside the room, carefully opening the door so that it didn't creak too much.

She kept her hood on in the event that she was found out; she could at least somehow make a run for it while protecting her identity.

Although, she did pray fervently that such a situation would not come upon her.

And as if on cue, Sparx had sensed her arrival and emerged from his hiding spot.

The little fennec fox bolted right for her and she picked him up to cradle him in her arms.

"Oh, Sparx, our time spent together these days has been scarce," Lady Karina said regretfully. "And now... now I would have to send you and the others away for a very long time."

Sparx tilted his head to the side, sensing the sorrow in her words.

He didn't like the sad glimmer in her eyes and brushed his furry cheek against hers to comfort her.

"Come, it is time to enter the sanctuary."

Lady Karina made her way over to the book shelf, allowing Sparx to slip from her arms.

She glanced around once to ensure that she was truly alone, still finding it odd that Lyall had let her off so easily.

She knew the man had definitely seen her.

Whether he recognised her or not was uncertain, but the fact that he didn't intercept her was still a cause for concern.

Nevertheless, she didn't have the time to worry about the specifics.

What mattered was that she was well on her way to accomplishing the goal she set out to do.

Lady Karina looked down at Sparx, nodding an unspoken order to him.

The little fennec fox moved forward, his forehead igniting with fire, which he pressed to the Moonveil insignia that was carved on the shelf.

The insignia lit up immediately with an amber glow and the entire bookshelf dissected itself, shifting apart to pave the way into a dark hidden tunnel.

It was quite a noisy mechanism so Lady Karina was aware it would draw attention; hence, she picked up Sparx and headed into the tunnel without another thought.

The bookshelf closed up behind her, returning to its original state.

With Sparx's glowing fur to light their way, she descended a long flight of stairs that led even deeper than the vault beneath the castle.

It was time to turn the tables.

The devils who crawled out of the depths of hell would be sent right back from whence they came.

came.

They might have thought they ruled the night, but Orpheus Van Merikh would soon learn that even without their beasts, Moonveil had another trump card.

One she wouldn't reveal at present, but only at the moment she needed it.

It was only the beginning after all.
