Chapter 90: Buying Spark

"Before that, can you check this?" Adyr asked as he pulled the Null Maggot from his belt. He wanted to get a sense of its general value.

"Hmm." The goat-man stroked his beard again, eyeing the Spark’s shell from a distance. Its color had clearly faded from hunger.

"You’re not taking good care of your Sparks, are you?" He said, raising an eyebrow with mild irritation. The Aqualith and Hollow Mimic he’d just sold had been in similar condition.

"I just don’t have the means right now," Adyr admitted. He knew it was his fault, but there wasn’t much he could do. Sparks were a practitioner’s most valuable assets, and he understood their importance. Still, in his current state, it felt like handing an expensive toy to a child and expecting it to stay intact.

"It’s not a rare Spark, and it’s easy to catch," the goat-man continued. "But its ability is quite popular among Nether Path practitioners. Also, it’s relatively cheap to maintain. Just give it a live host to inhabit—it’ll last for weeks. So I could offer crystals worth anywhere from 180 to 230 energy."

He paused, then added, "If you’re thinking of bargaining, 230 is my final offer. No more than that."

Adyr was slightly amused, though he didn’t show it. He gave a calm nod. "No, thank you. I’m not looking to sell it right now."

"Too bad," the goat-man said, turning away. As he walked off, he added, "Call me when you find something you want to buy." Then he vanished.

I wonder what kind of Spark he’s using—and what rank it is.

Adyr stared at the space where the goat had just been. He had assumed the man was Rank 2, but with teleportation this strong, it had to be something higher. Right?

He turned his attention back to the Sparks.

There were more than a hundred different types scattered throughout the floor, and he had 438 energy worth of crystals on hand. While browsing the first floor, he’d spotted a few Rank 1 Sparks he planned to buy—but before that, he decided to check the Rank 2 options as well.

Prices were higher than he expected.

With what he had, he could probably afford one Rank 2 and one Rank 1 Spark. He also had to reserve some energy to upgrade things inside the Dawn Land—especially to create proper habitats for Null Maggot and anything else he brought back.

Adyr walked through the aisles, searching for something that matched his needs. Some Sparks he dismissed instantly, not even sparing a second glance. Others caught his eye the moment he saw them, but, as expected, those had sky-high prices.

One in particular stood out: an Earth Wyvern. It looked like something he could use as a mount, similar to Malrik’s Frost Wyvern. But its price? A staggering 550 crystals, even more than Malrik’s.

If Rank 2 Sparks are already this expensive... I can’t imagine what Rank 3 and 4 cost. Adyr sighed. He felt like a poor man walking through a luxury store.

I should probably figure out what I actually need first. That’ll make choosing easier. Realizing the process was taking longer than expected, he paused for a moment.

He already had Null Maggot, a debuff-type Spark. As a Dawn Human, he could heal by consuming flesh, so he didn’t need a healing ability—at least for now.

That left him needing something to cover defense, movement, attack, and possibly detection or stealth.

After some thought, Adyr’s attention settled on a particular Spark that piqued his interest.

The Spark looked like it was made entirely of a mouth. About the size of a clenched fist, it hovered within a sealed glass dome, its form resembling a round, soft red head with thick lips and a wide, gaping maw. No eyes, no ears—just that open mouth, constantly trembling as if breathing in the silence around it. Despite its small size, the aura it gave off was unsettling.

Adyr glanced at the system window that appeared before his eyes.

[Name] Echo Screamer

[Path] Ignis

[Rank] 2

[Ability] Sonic Burst / Harmonic Pressure

Description: Echo Screamers are born in collapsed caverns, abandoned factories, or dead warzones—any place where silence has lingered for too long. These Sparks emit a low-frequency hum and continuously absorb ambient sound, feeding on the vibrations in their environment.

They are highly sensitive to movement and pressure shifts, becoming unstable when agitated. Despite lacking limbs, Echo Screamers levitate and rotate with eerie precision, often tilting mid-air to "listen" from multiple angles as they draw in the sounds around them.

Ability—Sonic Burst / Harmonic Pressure: Echo Screamers absorb sound and kinetic vibrations from their surroundings through their Harmonic Pressure ability, steadily building internal tension. Once fully charged, they release this stored energy as a high-speed, focused soundwave. This attack—known as Sonic Burst—can disorient, stagger, or even rupture internal organs in nearby targets. The wave travels at sonic velocity and is especially effective in confined or echo-enhancing environments.

This is good, Adyr thought. It wasn’t just an attack-type Spark—it was a ranged one. Even better, it used soundwaves as a bullet, which, as far as Adyr understood, could potentially harm spiritual entities to some extent as well.

He glanced at the small power summary next to the price tag beneath the Spark. It read 180, and the description offered some key information:

As long as the Spark was regularly fed and kept full, the practitioner could use the Sonic Burst ability continuously. The skill had two modes. The first acted like a quick-fire weapon, consuming only 0.1 energy per use and delivering a compact but effective shockwave. The second mode required a brief charge-up and released a powerful blast, similar to a cannon shot. This charged variant dealt heavy damage and cost around 2 energy, depending on how long it was charged.

It was also the first time Adyr learned that using a Spark’s ability consumed energy, but that wasn’t hard to guess. It made sense, after all.

Feeding it seemed easy, too. It only needed to be placed in a noisy environment and left to feed on its own.

"I want to buy this," Adyr said aloud.

"Oh... It’s a good choice," the goat-man replied, appearing out of nowhere and glancing at the Spark.

"It’s 180 energy worth of crystals. No discounts," he added firmly.

"Okay," Adyr agreed, and the transaction was completed swiftly.

He didn’t subdue the Spark right away. After storing it in one of the pouches on his belt, he spoke again. "I want to return to the first floor."

There was a Spark down there that had caught his attention earlier—something cheap but with a skill that could be useful.

"As you wish," the goat-man said, and in the blink of an eye, Adyr found himself back on the first floor.

He wandered between the Spark displays for a bit before finally spotting the one he was looking for.

The Spark looked like a translucent insect, no larger than a clenched fist. Its six thin, glassy legs twitched constantly, never staying still—even while suspended in the containment orb. The body pulsed rhythmically, almost like a beating heart, each throb sending a faint shimmer through its soft, veined shell.

It resembled a mutated grasshopper more than anything else, but without eyes or a mouth. Just movement—constant, nervous movement. As if it was always ready to launch itself into the air.

Its appearance was intriguing enough, but what caught Adyr’s interest even more was its ability, especially since it paired surprisingly well with his wings.
