=======================

"Today, Jaden Yuki and others entered the restricted special dorm, violating Academy rules. This is a serious matter."

Jaden and Syrus stood in the center of a large, empty room, surrounded by giant screens. Behind each screen sat a member of the Academy's top brass—Chancellor Sheppard and Professor Crowler among them.

"I'm sorry, I'll do whatever you say." Jaden pressed his palms together, sincerely. "Just give me a chance!"

Honestly, getting expelled wasn't that big a deal to Jaden. What he cared about was that, if kicked out, he wouldn't get to play cards with so many interesting opponents.

"Well, since even a slacker is begging so hard, I'll be merciful and give you a special chance, non." Professor Crowler grinned. "I'll arrange a tag-team punishment duel as soon as possible. Is that okay?"

Jaden: "Eh? Tag-team... punishment duel?"

"Exactly. Jaden Yuki and Syrus Truesdale, as members of your dorm, will participate in a dorm-versus-dorm duel. If you win, you'll be acquitted."

Jaden perked up at the mention of a duel, instantly forgetting the threat of expulsion.

"Dorm duel? Sounds fun!"

"Um..." Syrus whispered, "Isn't this kinda bad, big bro...?"

Professor Crowler: "Chancellor, as you see, he agrees."

Chancellor Sheppard pondered. "Well, if that's the case, nothing can be done."

"Wonderful." Crowler beamed. "Then just wait for the notification. I'll arrange your opponents as soon as possible, non!"

...

After the first period, Kira arrived at the Academic Affairs Office.

The tall female teacher welcomed him politely and made him tea.

The morning sunlight streamed into the office, golden spots dancing across the wooden floor like a warm carpet. Delicate porcelain cups steamed, the scent of tea mingling with the fresh air from the window.

"That's just about all I needed to ask."

The teacher smiled.

"Sorry for making you come in person, Kira-kun."

"Not at all." Kira waved it off. "Cooperating with the Academy's investigation is my duty."

"Still, you should be careful—the old dorm is a dangerous area, strictly off-limits. This time, we'll let it go, but don't wander into such dangerous places again."

"Don't worry, I won't do it again." Kira patted his chest.

"Good." She sipped her tea, smiling. "I hear you're one of the Academy's brightest new stars. If anything happened to you, we'd have a hard time explaining it."

"Thank you for your concern."

"Oh, and one more thing—"

The teacher leaned forward conspiratorially.

She lowered her voice.

"I heard you're friends with Kaiba, the President himself. Is that true?"

Kira considered. "Well, we do know each other."

To call him a friend was a stretch, but denying it outright would be awkward, considering all the favors he'd received.

Might as well roll with it.

He still had three years at the Academy, and having a solid backer couldn't hurt.

The teacher didn't say anything more, but her expression clearly said, "Terrifying!"

After all, the Academy was largely funded by Kaiba. Even if it wasn't, in this world, Kaiba's status was unrivaled. Connections in politics might not be as useful as knowing Kaiba.

"By the way, I heard the final punishment is a dorm duel?" Kira asked.

"Oh, that. Only Jaden Yuki and Syrus Truesdale, as the ringleaders, have to participate." She smiled. "You don't need to worry."

"I heard they might bring in a legendary duelist as the opponent?"

She was surprised. "How did you—oh, did Professor Crowler tell you?"

Bringing in a legendary duelist was Chronos' idea, not even finalized with the Chancellor yet. Only the Academic Affairs Office had been informed.

But the teacher remembered Kira was one of Crowler's favorites, so maybe the professor let it slip.

"If they win, won't they get a ton of credits?"

She hesitated. "Uh, well, probably."

Even though this was a punishment duel, if the opponent was a legendary duelist, they couldn't give a reward if Jaden and Syrus pulled off the upset.

Kira took a deep breath: "Teacher, I'm ashamed!"

Teacher: "?"

What are you ashamed of?

"I didn't go to the dorm with Jaden and the others. I went in on my own and just happened to run into them. So, I wasn't instigated—I was just as much a ringleader as Jaden! The others were just accomplices, so I should be punished!"

The teacher opened her mouth, then after a long pause finally said, "Well, as long as you know you were wrong... and you have a good attitude, so we'll let it go this time."

Kira raised an eyebrow.

"No, you can't let it go! Otherwise, what will other students think? What about the authority of the Academy's rules? If I get off scot-free, aren't I setting a bad example?"

Teacher: "..."

Shouldn't our lines be reversed right now?

Who fights to be punished?

"Ahem, I'm glad you're so self-aware," she said. "But the Academic Affairs Office can't change its decision once made—it's a matter of our authority. So, let's just leave it at that."

Kira put on a disappointed face.

"I see. Alright, I understand."

He got up, ready to leave.

Seeing he wasn't going to argue anymore, the teacher finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Seriously, if you went into a punishment duel and lost, could we expel you? If Kira and Jaden lost as a team, it'd look bad to expel one but not the other.

What would be the point of the punishment duel then?

Thank goodness he didn't press the issue...

Just then, she heard Kira's voice from the hallway.

"Hey, Kaiba? Yeah, it's me. So, the Academy's holding a tag-team punishment duel for entering the restricted area, but they're not letting me participate—uh, I mean, they're not giving me a chance to atone. But I feel so guilty I was wondering if you could have the Board contact the school and let me share the blame with my friends..."

"Pfft—" frёewebnoѵēl.com

The teacher spat out her tea.

She rushed out: "Wait, hold on! This can be discussed..."

Kira turned, playing surprised, and put his phone down. "Huh? Teacher, why'd you come out?"

But the moment he put the phone down, she noticed it wasn't even on.

She'd been tricked.

Kira never intended to call Kaiba over such a trivial thing.

"So, teacher, does this mean I can accept the punishment?"

She feebly waved her hand. "Fine."

Whatever, let things go however they go. She didn't care anymore.

...

That same day, in the Chancellor's office.

Chumley Huffington was confessing, "I was in the old dorm too, so please let me join Jaden's team! Punish me as well!"

"Me too!"

Alexis entered at that moment.

"I was at the old dorm last night, just didn't get caught," she said seriously. "Please punish me too."

Alexi knew Jaden was strong, but she could see that Syrus was dead weight. Pairing Jaden with Sryus was handicapping him. Alexis worried about her classmates' expulsion.

She wanted to take Syrus' spot to improve their odds.

Chancellor Sheppard smiled. "I understand how you feel. But punishment is up to the Academic Affairs Office, and once they've decided, it's never changed."

Alexis and Chumley exchanged helpless looks.

The reputation of the Academic Affairs Office was well known—they only appeared for serious situations and were famous for swift, decisive action.

If they'd decided...

Just then, the automatic door opened.

The female teacher from the Academic Affairs Office entered.

"Chancellor, the Academic Affairs Office has convened an emergency internal meeting and wishes to withdraw the punishment for the old dorm incident," she said. "We plan to reassign Fujiki Kira and Jaden Yuki as a team for the tag-team duel."

Chancellor Sheppard: "?"

Alexis & Chumpley: "??"

Wait, wasn't the Academic Affairs Office's word supposed to be final? Weren't decisions unchangeable? What happened to your dignity?
