Be Careful What You Wish For: A Zombie Apocalypse-Chapter 260: Always A Bright Side
Chapter 260: Always A Bright Side
The second I held the black box up to my face to study it, it let out a low sound, similar to a fog horn. Startled, I threw the box to Désiré even as the sound it was making started to get higher and higher until I could no longer hear it.
"Turn that shit off," growled Luca, narrowing his eyes at Désiré. Désiré, on the other hand, simply opened his own eyes wide and started to protest.
"I no was me," he grunted, throwing the box back at me. "’Attie was the one who picked it up in de first place."
Looking around, I tried to find a switch or anything that would turn it off. However, no matter how many times I ran my hands over the sides of the cube, I couldn’t find anything.
By this point in time, my ears were ringing, I had a massive headache, and I could have sworn I was seeing sound.
"That ain’t normal," grunted Ronan, covering his ears as he glared at the box.
"No shit, Sherlock," I grunted, tossing the box into my space just to get the noise to go away. "But why would someone throw this at us."
"I didn’t see that," grunted Chang Xuefeng as he studied my face. "How did you?"
"You know, just a bit of this and that," I shrugged, clearly not answering the question at all. However, no one was overly interested in the how because we all figured out the why.
"They’re comin’!" grunted Dimitri as he fired a second and third shot into the approaching zombie. Unlike the mutated zombies from before that almost seemed to swim on land, these ones were running at us like a wolf on all fours.
Their heads seemed to be nothing more than a shrunken skull covered in greenish-blue skin.
"It’s like the stupid zombies fucked the mutated ones, and these babies popped out," snarled Ronan right before he tossed his rifle at me. "Guns be useless. We need de cold shit now."
I looked at him blankly, not at all sure what exactly de ’cold shit’ was.
"Knives, Sweetling," purred Désiré. "We need blades, not guns."
Shrugging my shoulders, I pulled every last blade out of my space and dropped them on the ground in front of us. "Take what you need," I smiled at them as the first zombie sprung up from its back legs and flew at me.
Letting out a growl of challenge, Dimitri jumped into the air and plucked the zombie out of it mid-flight. Twisting his body so that he landed on top, Dimitri transformed his entire right hand to metal as he started pounding in the zombie’s head.
"Fucker’s not dyin’," he grunted right before he ripped the zombie’s head off. The second it was decapitated, it stopped moving and seemed to sink into the earth.
"Decapitation," nodded Salvatore. "Done."
It was cute how the guys fell back into single-syllable words when I was threatened. I almost wanted to make it a daily thing, just to see them turn into cavemen, but I was almost sure that they would hate that.
"Found you," hissed a voice from right behind me.
Chang Xuefeng spun around, his scythe cutting off the head of the zombie that appeared behind me.
And spoke.
"Fucking Christ," growled Dante, his eyes becoming nothing more than orange flames as the man became engulfed in Hellfire. "They talk now."
"De do more dan that," replied Dimitri. "De coordinate. Dat was an ambush. De sendin’ out the scouts ta test us out."
"How do you want to play this?" asked Luca, turning to look at Dante.
"If Hattie wasn’t here, we could play a bit," replied Dante, his eyes narrowing on the zombie still hiding near the crumbling buildings. They were surrounded on all sides by creatures that they had never fought before.
If this was before the end of the world, he might have wanted to figure out exactly how they ticked, but not now. Not here.
"No takin’ dat chance," snorted Dimitri, looking down at his hand. Melted metal started to pool in the center of his palm before forming itself into a thin blade. The thing was incredibly sharp but small. "Kill first, ask questions later."
"Do I get a say in the matter?" I asked with a sigh. As much as I loved the caveman aura, the incessant need to protect me from absolutely everything was starting to grate on my nerves. I had survived a gunshot to the head. Not much was killing me.
"No," replied Tank, tilting his head from side to side as he studied the enemies. It was like there was a DMZ between where we stood on the road and where the zombies were waiting for us. Each side was just waiting for the other to do something stupid... and that annoyed me.
"I can’t even take credit for this new zombie," I said suddenly. "The government made the mutated zombies, One Nut wished for the dumb ones, and then there were Killer Clowns. Now, there is a third cousin twice removed coming out of the woodwork, and I don’t know how smart they’ll be."
Dante shrugged as he picked me up and physically tossed me at Chang Xuefeng. "Don’t let go of her," he grunted at the angel as lightning surrounded the outsides of his fists. "We go with Dimitri’s plan. Kill first, ask questions later."

Commander Alistar ’Al’ Raines lowered his binoculars as he watched the scene unfolding beneath him.
"We got movement," said the man beside him as he leaned against the crumbling wall of the high rise they were standing on. Well, high rise was a matter of perspective since it was only ten floors up, but it was the highest point in this section of L City.
"I see that," replied Alistar. There were nine figures, all of them well-equipped with at least one space user in their group. The moment they moved, it was easy to tell that they had worked together forever, probably long before the world went to shit.
The only problem was that they were rushing at the Z-Pack like they were any other type of zombie. One of the men behind him scoffed when he saw this. They had potential, but now they were just going to die like everyone else who confronted the Pack.
At least when the space user died, they could scavenge all the supplies that would be released.
There was always a bright side to every confrontation.
