Chapter 261: What We Always Do

A bolt of lightning flashed through the sky as Dante brought it down on the back of one of the zombies charging toward him. The strike was enough to cause the zombie to yelp in agony, like an animal, before shaking off the pain and continuing to race toward the demon.

Drool floated in the wind behind it as its tongue hung from between the four-inch, razor-sharp teeth. Shifting to the side at the last second, Dante brought his knife down at the back of its skull, separating the head from the spine.

Just like the first zombie, it collapsed right away before melting into the earth in a puddle of goo.

"I’m going to need a shower after this," murmured Dante, wrinkling his nose in disgust as he briefly looked over at me. Unfortunately for him, his break didn’t last long until the next zombie approached.

"They are creepy," I grunted as I shuddered in Luca’s arms. "Like a weird human/wolf hybrid. I really want to open the brain of whoever managed to create these things cause nothing about them screams natural."

Luca hummed in agreement as he dropped his chin on top of my head. "I wonder if those watching this fight are the ones who created them," he said softly before moving his head until his cheek was resting where his chin once was.

"I mean, we can always go up and ask them," I replied, happy that I wasn’t the only one who could feel the eyes practically burrowing into the guys around me.

"They can come down," sneered Luca, his words clearly visible even if they couldn’t carry all the way to the top of the tallest building. "We’re nobody’s bitch." fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

I could feel him vibrating behind me, and I clung to the arm he had around my shoulders. "They set a trap for us and now are watching to see where the chips fall."

Humming, I couldn’t help but laugh. "At least we know that no matter how much time has passed, some things still remain the same."

"Oh?" murmured Salvatore as he came to stand beside Luca, his eyes scanning the situation in front of us.

"Mmm," I hummed, looking up to where I knew the people were watching us. "The weak still kneel, the stupid still die, and the cowards still watch from the shadows, hoping they won’t be next."

Smirking slightly, just in case one of them could read my lips, I turned my head to look at Salvatore. "The weak envy the strong, and everyone wants to be a Sin."

My Envy demon tilted back his head as laughter poured out of his mouth. The sound was so inviting I couldn’t help but chuckle with him.

"Well said, Little Star. But might as well let them watch. There isn’t a damn thing more fun than showing an audience why they should’ve stayed home," purred Envy. Holding out his hand, the creatures stopped suddenly.

"You don’t want to fight us," called out Envy, his voice echoing around us. The zombies all turned their heads to look at him, utterly unable to do anything without his permission. "Fuck off. If you see us again, run in the other direction. However, anyone else you see, kill them on the spot."

"We’ll remember," grunted one of the zombies toward the back. I think he was the leader or something because he was the only one who spoke while the others were still focused on Envy.

"Hive mind," whispered Dante as he walked over to where I was. "I was inside their heads, and it’s like their minds are all connected to each other. There are no words, only thoughts and feelings. But the Alpha has complete control over the pack."

"Pack?" demanded Dimitri as Envy waved his hand and the zombie in front of us turned around and raced away. "Like a wolf pack?"

Dante shrugged his shoulders. "How the fuck do I know? All I am saying is that concepts apart from eat, kill, and fuck are going around in their empty brains. And you really don’t want to know what they are thinking about when they think about fucking."

Désiré grunted and wrinkled his nose. "Remind me not to push lust on them next time we fight then," he said smoothly as everyone turned their attention to the tallest building. "Them, on the other hand..."

"We know nothing about them," reminded Chang Xuefeng as he came to stand in front of me. "They might make a good ally."

"The only good ally is a dead one," grunted Luca as he pulled me in even closer.

"I don’t think that’s how it works," I muttered, even as the men around me chuckled.

"Naw, Sugar," smiled Beau as he leaned down to kiss my cheek. "But dat don’t make ’im wrong. After all, you should be willing to trust your ally to protect what is important to you. And I don’t trust nobody to protect you other than us."

"Dude’s got a point," agreed Ronan, letting out a long yawn. "With all our luck, they are gonna try and take you from us and den we be gonna have ta destroy de world. And frankly, dat seems like a lot of energy."

Shaking my head, I let out a soft laugh. "Well, nothing is going to be done if we just keep standing here. Let’s go play a bit. It seems like it is going to be nightfall soon; I’ll need a place to set up the house."

Luca raised his head to look at the sky. "This is fucking trippy as hell," he complained. "It was midnight when we left the circus, and then it was the middle of the day when we walked out of the forest."

I simply shrugged my shoulders. "Not my circus, not my monkeys. Day and night will come when they come, and that’s the end of it. Besides, in the grand scheme of things, what is a day or two anyway?"

"Cause we’ve clearly been gone a lot longer than a simple day or two," grumbled Luca. It wasn’t his fault that he needed some type of schedule to function. At least he used to understand the concept of 24 hours. Now it’s all gone to shit.

"Well, when the watchers decide to grow a pair and confront us, then we can ask them," grunted Tank, clearly just as done with the subject as I was. "Until then, we do what we always do."

"And what is that?"

"Protect Hattie."
