Chapter 108: Dealing With Kian
Crimson Leaf Cafe.
Ten minutes before her shift, Abigail arrived at the café. She was surprised to see that it was not as packed as usual. Only a few tables were occupied on the first floor, and there was no line at the cashier.
As she walked quietly toward the staff lounge, hoping not to be noticed, she spotted Kian and Tanya talking behind the counter. However, before she could pass by, Tanya caught sight of her.
"Oh, Sister Abigail, you’re here early," Tanya said, moving away from Kian to approach Abigail with her trademark wide smile.
"Sister Abigail, we don’t have many customers right now. You can take your time in the staff lounge. Plus, we have Brother Kian here, who will be working until night to keep you company," Tanya giggled happily, which made Abigail smile in return.
"Has Boss Lana returned? I haven’t seen her." Abigail asked, beginning to worry about having to work with Kian until the evening. Even now, she could feel Kian’s intense gaze on her, which made her uncomfortable.
Abigail tried her best to ignore him, even though she knew she couldn’t avoid him until the evening.
"Yeah, she told me she has some personal errands and would only return after we close the café," Tanya explained.
Abigail chose not to say anything else. She walked inside to get ready, trying to think positively about Kian, hoping he wasn’t as bad as she thought and that all her suspicions about him were false.
When Abigail entered the staff room, her smile brightened her face as she saw Erica getting ready to start her shift.
"Erica, I’m so glad to see you on the same shift as me!" Abigail said, standing beside her as she put her bag in the locker. After hanging her light outerwear on the hook, she put on her apron and tied her hair back into a ponytail.
"Sis Abigail, me too. How are you today?" Erica smiled back at her, but when she noticed something, her smile faded. "Why do you look so distressed, sister? Did something happen to you?" she asked with concern.
Abigail was taken aback by Erica’s worry. She tried to adjust her expression and smiled as casually as possible, not wanting anyone to see how she truly felt.
"Do I...?" She pretended to be confused as she turned to look in the mirror in the corner, cupping her face with both hands.
When she saw her gloomy expression, she silently sighed deeply, suppressing her worry about working with Kian, which clouded her mind.
"Yeah, you look pale and stressed. Is something wrong with your grandma?" Erica asked again. After several weeks working with Abigail, she had never seen her look this stressed.
"I’m doing well, and my grandma is also fine. Thank you for asking about her, Erica," Abigail said as she returned her gaze to Erica. "I think I’m just tired. I have a lot to do at home and didn’t get much sleep last night..."
Abigail found her excuse amusing, but it wasn’t a lie. She talked with Sawyer until almost midnight, and not long after that, she continued her conversation with Lana about work.
"I’m glad you and Grandma are okay. Well, it looks like we need to go outside now," Erica said. Excitedly, she linked her arm with Abigail’s as they walked outside, ready to work.
...
As Tanya’s shift ended and she left, Kian remained busy processing several customer coffee orders. Abigail quickly joined him and started working casually alongside him.
Though Abigail tried not to engage in conversation, Kian couldn’t help himself. He began talking about Lana and shared a few exciting things at the café that day. Abigail had no choice but to respond briefly or with light remarks; she couldn’t completely ignore him.
As the evening approached and the café became livelier, Kian unexpectedly stepped closer to Abigail while she was processing an order. Their eyes met, and Abigail’s surprised expression made Kian smile faintly.
Hurriedly, Abigail moved aside, continuing to ignore him. From how he looked and got closer to her, Abigail knew he was intent on flirting with her.
Minutes passed, and Abigail continued to ignore Kian. To spark some light conversation, he asked, "Abigail, I heard from Tanya that you always work alone during your entire shift. Is that true?"
"Yes," Abigail replied curtly, focusing on finishing the coffee she had just prepared. "When Lana has personal matters to attend to, I end up working alone," she said without looking at him.
’Gosh! Why is dealing with this man tiring? I feel exhausted now...’ She silently vented her frustration inwardly.
"You work so hard, Abigail. That’s why I asked Lana to help you today, even though I have a personal matter to attend to. I canceled because of you..." Kian’s concern caused Abigail to frown, but she didn’t look at him or say anything.
She thought that by ignoring him, he would stop talking, but this persistent Kian moved closer, standing so close to her that their arms brushed against each other.
Despite Abigail’s best efforts to avoid him, she continued making coffee until the last order.
Finally, she turned to him and said, "Kian, if you have a personal matter, you can go home now. I can manage here alone. We’ll be closing in a few minutes, and it seems like there aren’t many customers left."
However, Kian didn’t seem inclined to leave the café. He remained next to Abigail, continuing to watch her. She was left utterly speechless.
Before long, the café’s closing time finally arrived.
As usual, Abigail didn’t linger and began preparing to leave.
Suddenly, Kian entered the staff lounge just as she was about to open her locker.
"Abigail, Lana wanted to talk to you in her office," he said.
"Oh, she’s coming?" Abigail’s eyes lit up at the news that Lana had finally arrived. She wanted to greet her before heading home.
"Yes, she’s waiting for you," Kian responded with a sly smile slowly spreading across his lips, which Abigail overlooked.
Abigail walked toward Lana’s office, with Kian following closely behind her.
"Huh? Where is she...?" Abigail turned to look at Kian at the door and was shocked when she saw him smirk while closing the door behind him.
