Chapter 131: Dud

With the bright light illuminating the area, the battle progressed faster.

Now, the experienced A-rankers from the Lin family could see the beast’s muscles move, allowing them to predict its attacks. As a result, dodging stronger attacks and maintaining control became much easier.

Meanwhile, the flood dragon tried every trick in its book. Its giant serpentine body swirled and turned in the air, closely following its enemies, attacking from all sides. But it couldn’t land a single hit.

*Roar*

The beast cried out in pain as multiple attacks landed on its body, ripping off the dark scales covering it.

Oliver and Root watched everything from afar while munching on potato chips. Although a fearsome battle was taking place before them, they weren’t concerned at all. Oliver’s unconcealed confidence was like a contagious disease, spreading to Root.

*Roars*

As time went on, the Lin family warriors gained the upper hand. The three elders worked together to trap the dragon in the large vines released by one of them, while the other two blocked its tail and the tiny claws attached to its body.

The flood dragon felt the mana in its body scramble. It felt like it was losing control over its mana. The vines the elder released were disrupting the flow of mana in its body.

"Young lady, this is it," the old man who released the vines screamed.

The giant body of the flood dragon, almost twenty meters long, struggled in the hundreds of vines holding it. Although it temporarily lost the ability to control mana due to the special ability of the vines, it could still break free. They had, at most, a few seconds to kill it.

The elders’ voice traveled to Lin Yue, who was floating nearby.

The elders held their breath.

Root’s drone flew up excitedly to get a better look.

Oliver clutched the bag of potato chips.

While everyone wished for the dragon to die, Oliver wished the beast would bite off Lin Yue’s head. He silently prayed.

Luck had never been on Oliver’s side in his life, but still, he wanted it to be with him today.

At that moment, Lin Yue, who had been preparing for something for a long time, shot her hand forward. From her open palm, a red crystal flew out. The crystal was the size of a ping-pong ball, but it traveled with the speed of a bullet.

"Ting!"

Within a second, it lodged itself between the flood dragon’s horns. However, the dragon didn’t feel any pain or discomfort. Its thick skull and scaly body protected it perfectly. The crystal couldn’t pierce its body, so it deformed and stuck to its head.

"It seems like luck is not on my side, again," Oliver muttered half-heartedly. He knew what the crystal was, and the real attack was about to begin. He looked at the dragon with pity.

’In my past life, I died four times because of that damned crystal. We were both unlucky today, dragon brother.’

His gaze turned soft.

Immediately, he saw the crystal attached to the dragon grow. Taking the red crystal on its head as a nucleus, many small crystals began to sprout from its sides. The mana Lin Yue had stored inside the crystal was expanding and covering the dragon’s entire body. With this, the crystal growth sped up.

The dragon sensed the danger and tried to move. The elders tightened the vines around its body, sealing its movement. The crystal continued to grow, covering the dragon’s entire body in shiny red shards, a couple of inches thick. It even spread to the vines, making it harder for the dragon to move.

Finally, the crystal-encased dragon stood still. It only took a few seconds from launching the attack to sealing the dragon. The floating body trembled, some of the crystals breaking and falling from its body.

’She did it, huh!’ Oliver was surprised that Lin Yue, an A-ranker, could do something like that.

"Everyone, move back," Lin Yue suddenly said.

Her voice was soft and sweet. Like everything else about her, it was beautiful to hear. The elders responded and jumped back.

Oliver noticed Lin Yue’s graceful body tremble.

’Oh! It was not as easy as I imagined.’

As the dragon’s body trembled, trying to shed the crystals covering it, Lin Yue was also trembling. She seemed to be using a lot of mana to control the form and shape of the crystals. And each crystal shard that peeled off sent a backlash to her.

’That’s right. The red crystals she produces are not meant to seal objects. She would have used a colorless one if she had to seal it.’ Oliver thought back to his crystal prison.

The colorless crystals she used were strong and durable. That’s why it took him years to grind them away and escape.

’If my guess is correct, she can’t use the colorless crystals that look like diamonds, yet.’ Oliver smiled. ’Anyway, that won’t be a problem.’

Oliver gazed back at the red crystal. Once everyone retreated, the crystal attached to the dragon began to glow. Along with the reddish light, it produced waves of heat.

Then...

"ZzzzzzzZzzzz"

Like a matchstick being lit, it burst into flames. Some of the crystals exploded, sending burning fragments across the forest. Oliver watched the scene in doubt.

’What the heck was that?’

’Is that a dud?’ He raised his eyebrows.

’That’s a dud, right?’

From his experience in tanking the ability, it was supposed to instantly turn into pure light and heat, creating a giant explosion.

’But it burned like a soaked match!’

’She made a mistake!’ He smiled.

’Lin Fucking Yue is weak!’ The realization struck Oliver like a twenty-ton truck. He stood there for a couple of seconds with his mouth wide open.

’I overestimated her abilities.’ He realized that Lin Yue was not really a threat as she stood.

’No wonder her sister was dead in her past life. They must have failed to catch the dragon.’

Oliver noticed the charred figure of the flood dragon emerge from the blaze. While its body was covered in black soot and many of its scales were burnt, its body was still safe. The water elemental’s ability, along with its absurd defense, seemed to allow it to survive.

’The lousy crystal immolation was not enough to take it down.’

*RAAARRR*

The shrill scream of the dragon reverberated outwards. This time, the beast’s bloodshot eyes showed rage far surpassing anything it had shown before. The charcoal-black body of the flood dragon turned to face Lin Yue. It curled up in the air for a second and launched itself forward.

*Boom*

It created a sonic boom.

Oliver picked up his chips and ate with a smile. It got ten times more interesting. It was better than watching an action movie.

Before he could bite down on the chip, the dragon’s huge body clashed against an elder.

*THUMP*

He was thrown away like a ragdoll. Although the sword he carried was plunged deep into the dragon’s body, it didn’t care at all. The enraged, wounded dragon was behaving like a total maniac. It didn’t care about its safety anymore. It wanted to rip out and eat the flesh and blood of its enemies.

High-ranked mana beasts can accelerate their healing by eating other high-ranked beasts. An A-ranked human was also considered a good supplement. But the beast wasn’t thinking about it at all.

No, it wasn’t thinking at all.

After slamming down the first elder, it moved to Lin Yue. This time, the vine-releasing elder tried to block it.

Large and thick vines, the largest he could create, flowed out from his body and grabbed onto the dragon, tying themselves to the trees below. However, instead of stopping, the dragon uprooted the trees and continued to move forward. Even the elder was pulled forward until the vines broke.

Large gashes appeared on the dragon’s body. The tiny claws attached to the underbelly of the beast were almost ripped off in the process of escaping the vines.

Now, between Lin Yue and the flood dragon, only one elder stood. He was the only one who had talked with Oliver and agreed to compensate him.

The good-natured elder created a giant stone shield in front of him to block the dragon’s assault.

The fast-moving body of the dragon glowed pale blue. It crashed against the stone shield.

*Thump*

Like a bullet, it pierced through the shield at the cost of breaking one of its horns and continued to fly forward. The elder who stood in front of it was smacked away.

*RAWRRRR* ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

With a victorious roar, the dragon beelined towards Lin Yue. Lin Yue was tired. The mana in her body was barely enough to hold herself up. Dazed, she gazed at the dragon. Only a dozen meters or so separated them.

Lin Yue felt the breath of death creeping up behind her. She could die. Really die. The thought grasped her mind as life flashed before her eyes.

Her sister.

Her father.

The elders.

...

She saw everyone she knew and everything she had experienced. There was no escaping it... She was about to accept fate.

"Guild leader, help her." Suddenly, a voice spoke in Oliver’s ear.

Oliver ignored it. It was too risky. It could cause a lot of problems in the future.

So, why should he help his future enemy?

"I will join the guild if you help her."

But the next few words changed his thoughts entirely.

Suddenly, the light went off.

Darkness once again returned to the forest. Oliver, who was sitting peacefully, stood up.

That was an offer he couldn’t reject.
