Blood Nemesis-Chapter 65: Registration 1
Chapter 65: Registration 1
The Superhuman Monitoring Bureau(SMB) has many of its branch offices all across the city.
However, only their main building in the city centre could register new individuals.
So, Oliver dragged his lazy ass across the city to reach their main office.
The bus he was riding stopped near the front gate of the building. Oliver walked out along with dozens of other people who were riding the bus.
Just like him, there were many youngsters inside the bus.
They must have come to get themselves registered.
It was mandatory for all individuals above eighteen to get their abilities tested and verified by SMB.
Thus, Oliver was not surprised to see the crowd of youngsters walking along with him to the office building.
’Huh!’ He sighed, looking at their excited faces.
The kids were excited because when registering themselves, they could also see their potential score.
The potential of a person was measured by the mana response signature of their body.
For example, a person with high potential usually has high mana resonance. This allows them to control, store, and utilise mana effectively.
Hence, the chance of their abilities evolving and growing stronger was also high.
The potential score dictates most of a person’s life.
The people present before him were about to choose their future path based on their potential score.

Oliver sighed again.
In his past life, he must have also looked like one of those excited kids, he thought.
He could see his reflection in them.
’The excitement would die down soon. Most of them would be disappointed with what they hear.’ Oliver silently thought.
He was one of the disappointed kids.
He knew how it felt when somebody said you would never be enough.
His body, which was incapable of using mana, meant that his ability would never evolve. That was the judgment handed over to him in his past life.
At that time, he felt like it was a death sentence.
Although he expected to hear bad news, he still couldn’t bear it.
’Ah! The past.’
His memories resurfaced as he walked closer to the testing area.
All the kids, he included, were being guided to a room at the end of the hallway.
When they reached there, Oliver took a seat in the waiting area.
Their names were being called according to their token number into the room to test.
Oliver’s token number was 68.
It would take a while for him to be called in.
’Ah! This is a time sink!’ Oliver complained in his heart.
The excited kids near him were also making him uncomfortable.
He preferred a quiet atmosphere.
"Hey, is this seat taken?" Someone suddenly came by and asked.
It was a teenager similar in age to Oliver.
"..." Oliver glanced over without saying anything.
"Anyway, my name is Leon."
The kid named Leon didn’t care about the cold stare of Oliver and sat next to him and asked, "Hey man, are you excited?"
*Sigh* Oliver sighed.
"That’s the fifth time," Leon said. He had noticed Oliver sighing repeatedly.
"..."
"Do you want to know what?"
"..."
"Are you mute?" Suddenly, he showed embarrassment and asked.
Leon was scratching his head, looking at Oliver, who was sitting like a statue.
"Anyway, it doesn’t matter. I know sign language. You can sign for me."
*Sigh*
Oliver was doing his best to keep it together. The damned kid was getting on his nerves. He was convinced that it would be hard to find someone as annoying as Leon in the entire world.
"Oh, it seems like you don’t want to talk." Finally, a light bulb went off in his head as Leon realised what was happening.
"You are the silent type, right?" He nodded again and again in an understanding manner.
"Anyway, sorry for disturbing you." He said and leaned back onto the chair.
Then he flipped open the brochure in his hand and began to read.
The brochure had images of famous heroes like Fist King, The Sorcerer, The Beast, The Phantom, The Blaze, etc.
All of them were S-ranked heroes who were from different parts of the world.
The Fist King was a martial arts-focused S-ranked hero from the federation.
The Sorcerer was a manipulator-type superhuman with the ability to control matter and energy. He was a Continental Republic Citizen.
The Beast is another hero from the Continental Republic.
The Phantom was from the Eastern Alliance, and the Blaze was from The Sol Empire.
Although all of them held different nationalities, they were considered heroes who protected the world.
So, they were popular across the globe.
Oliver noticed the kid named Leon flipping through the brochure while reading the information in it.
It was an advertisement from the Hero Union given to the youngsters who were being registered.
Hero Union wanted talented youngsters to join them. This was a place to snag a few.
That was why the brochure was showing the images of some of the best heroes in the world.
Oliver smirked when he saw it.
The kid was immersed in reading it and didn’t notice the smirk that appeared on Oliver’s face.
’They sell dreams at the grave of dreams.’ Oliver found it amusing.
Most of the teenagers around him were about to get a reality check. While he didn’t entirely agree with the methodology to measure potential, he agreed with the result that if you are not able to handle bad news, it is better to quit.
’Fortune favours the fortunate.’ He said in his mind with a sly smile.
According to Oliver, the saying that fortune favours the bold was a lie.
It doesn’t matter if you are bold, brave, or courageous. Your actions have no control over the fortune you receive.
Thus, it was better to take it out of the equation once and for all.
’The entire theme of measuring potential was a big luck testing contest. It was not something you should take seriously. And when you think about it, not all people with good potential turn out to be heroes, nor do they become someone great. So, the process of measuring potential was in itself meaningless.’
’Why be part of this meaningless test.’
Oliver thought and leaned back into the chair.
If only he had known about it in the past.
Maybe something might have changed.
’Some lessons can only be learnt through experience.’ Oliver thought.
The kid named Leon, who was excitedly looking at the brochure, was the same. He had to experience it to learn the lesson.
