Chapter 89: Snakes

In the grand scheme of the world, Oliver’s death was soon forgotten. Only Achara seemed a little gloomy about his death.

She sat alone in a far corner of the plaza, waiting for the gate to open, mulling. Her graceful legs that could kick away a car was tightly tucked close to her as she thought about the past.

’The demons need to know that the city is out of their reach.’

Achara remembered the last conversation she had with him.

She remembered how he had proudly declared that he would take down all the demons in the city and protect it. She remembered the unbreakable fighting spirit burning in his eyes when he said that.

’And yet... He died before fulfilling any of his promises.’

’That...’

She couldn’t find a word to describe Oliver.

Was he a fool?

An idiot of massive proportions?

He had no reason to personally jump into the sewers and search for the demon. If anything, it was her job. Though his presence saved her, she wanted to scream at him for his stupidity.

Besides that, she wanted someone to scold her, too.

Oliver was an eighteen year old kid with bright future. If she was a little more careful, this tragedy wouldn’t have happened.

"Sigh!"

Achara sighed while lifting the towel covering her face. She used it to wipe her dirty face and uniform before placing it nearby.

Although an awful incident happened, she was not going to give up, she said in her mind.

Placing her leg gently on the ground, she lifted herself and looked towards the sewer entrance in the middle of the plaza.

The manhole cover was removed, and waves of mana and electromagnetic fields were coming through it to the outside.

The gate was about to break open.

Fortunately, the poison in her body was suppressed and forced out. She could join the battle that was about to commence.

Oliver was part of their organisation. Although he joined recently, his importance was no less than that of the core members. Thus, she had to avenge his death.

"Ah!"

She let out a deep breath, dejected, thinking about the fact that she would have to inform his death to his family and her commander.

While her mind spun around, moving from one thought to another, the plaza trembled slightly.

In the cups of water placed nearby, she saw waves forming due to the seismic activity.

Achara quickly turned to look at the center of the plaza.

Whatever the demons were doing, it was happening right under the plaza.

"Everyone, back up. Keep formation and surround it." The squad leader commanded, moving the soldiers, his team memebers away from the plaza.

The entire area had already been evacuated, and no other people except those from the military remained there.

Meanwhile, Achara walked to him and asked.

"When will they reach?"

"In a few minutes." He replied.

Before they went into the sewers, Achara had sent the information to her commander, Thunder Emperor, and asked for backup.

Although it took a second to convince him, the backup was sent shortly after. However, it would take some time for them to reach the location.

"What about the Hero Union, Hunter Association, and SMB?"

"They will send their people once the official gate break warning is issued."

"Why are they delaying?"

"Well, it’s an unexpected situation." The squad leader wiped his visor and said.

Gates were not supposed to break open near the permenent ones. It was supposed to be basics knowledge. And yet, something that overturns this rule was about to happen. It indeed was a difficult to convince them.

"But the EMP and Mana waves can be detected."

"SMB is already monitoring it. They will send their people the moment the gate-break happens...if it happens." The squad leader emphasised the last few words when he spoke.

Achara nodded.

There was not much she could do about that. So, brought her attention back to the trembling ground and said.

"We don’t know what kind of gate it would be or the creatures that come out of it. We have to assume the worst and prepare for it."

"Yes. I hope the demons fail."

"They won’t."

"How can you be so sure?"

"I have a feeling they won’t."

While they spoke, the intensity of the trembling increased. The ground slowly began to shake like an earthquake.

"This?" The fully armoured squad leader, along with the members, took a step back.

The barely visible eyes of their were showing worry as time went on.

"We should move back," Achara suggested.

"That’s a great idea."

The squad leader tucked the weapon close to his body and immediately asked the team to move back.

With steady footsteps, the soldiers moved back, their eyes not moving away from the center of the plaza.

Just as they moved a dozen meters away, they suddenly saw the ground crack. A fissure wide enough to swallow a person soon spread outwards.

The intense shaking of the earth split the sewer tunnels and swallowed the earth above. The manhole caved in as the plaza sank a few meters. The entire area was collapsing inwards.

Fortunately, the soldiers were far away, so it didn’t affect them.

Suddenly, the undulating EMP and Mana waves intensified. The light in the whole area went off. Soon, the darkness of the night crept back to consume everything.

The ground shook violently in that exact second, creating thunderous noises.

The soldiers were prepared for the situation and quickly activated the mana lighting around the plaza.

Once the light came back, the scene that appeared before them, shocked them to the core. The entire plaza, about 50 meters in diameter, with many small fish shops had seemingly disappeared in a instant.

In their place, there was a crater, just as wide as the plaza. And in the middle of it was a undulating, circular opening that was ripped out of the fabric of space, shining in radiant rainbow colors.

’Gate.’ Everyone thought simultaneously.

The colorful gate seemed to have swallowed the entire plaza and everything on it because of it openning under the ground.

Other than the broken part of the sewage tunnels and some debris of wood and concrete flying around, there was nothing else in the conical crater that was embedded into the ground.

Immediately, they began to hear warning sirens from all around the area.

The gate break warnings were being broadcast across the city.

Achara squinted her nose as a cloud of dust flew over to her. She then focused her eyes and watched the colorful gate.

It was about 10 meters wide, looked like a disc, and stood vertically over the ground.

There was no presence of a demon near it.

Even if there were, they would have been swallowed up by the gate when it swallowed the plaza.

Now, the real concern was not the demons, it was the creatures that was about to come out of the gate.

Achara’s eyes finally caught glimpse of something small and dark poking out of the gate.

It was tiny compared to the towering gate.

"A tail?"

"No, it’s the head." The squad leader said.

Through his visor, he could better block out the light from the glowing gate and see the creature.

Two small beady eyes were deeply implanted onto the slender object that peeked out of the gate.

"That’s a snake." The squad leader added after careful consideration.

Immediately, the slender creature with black scales, narrow head, and two black diamond-like eyes came out of the gate.

It was about six feet long and was as thick as a normal snake.

"That’s a lot of snakes." Achara nodded and said when she saw hundreds or maybe thousands of similar creatures coming out of the gate like a gushing tidal wave.

The snakes were twisting and turning around each other’s bodies as they slithered out of the gate in bulk.

Those who witnessed the scene felt like something was crawling up their back. The natural disgust and fear towards snakes that any person would have were working in overdrive in their mind.

Within seconds, the number of snakes filling the crater had come to a staggering number. Now, thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of snakes were swimming in the pool of sewer water spilling into the crater.

"Can you guess their rank?" The squad leader asked Achara, knowing she could sense mana better than he could.

"They don’t have any. They are not mana beasts. The real terror has yet to come out." Achara replied.

The snakes that just appeared were normal creatures with barely any mana. But she could sense a dreadful mana wave coming from the gate.

The mana was heavy, noxious, and suffocating. The real terror was still hiding inside the gate.

"The monster is A rank or something close to S rank. I can feel many smaller mana signatures, which are around C rank." Achara said gloomily.

The size of the gate determines if the S rank creature to come out of it because most high ranked creatures were huge. And the one just created was not as big as an S-rank gate.

But, adding ’snakes’ into the equation, it could change everything. The slender body of the snake might allow it to come out of the gate.

Achara’s heart felt a little cold.
