Chapter 49: Chapter 49.Arrie’s past 2

Kailen sighed deeply, then told Arrie to continue.

’’After leaving New York City, I found out that the woman who I had decided to follow was Helena Hall, a great researcher in the Federation and an S class healer. I was wary around her at the beginning. However, after a few months of living with her, she expressed the desire to adopt me as her own daughter.

To be honest we rarely communicated because I had been avoiding her. However, I had nothing to lose by being adopted by her, so I agreed. After adopting me, she later found out I was 16 years and asked me if I had awakened. I told her I do not recall anything of the sort. I was taken to the awakener’s center in the university for a routine check and found out that I was a dual awakener, having awakened the metal and healing affinity. I then recalled the connection I felt my weak hand movements make with the metal of the car door that day in New York City, having realized it was the metal affinity at work. From then on, I enrolled in the university. She helped me with the healing process and bonded with me , proving to me everyday with her actions the world I lived in may have been unfair and full of wicked people, but not everyone is like that, and here I am’’

Kailen sighed deeply, again as she continued ’’ The reason why I shared this with you is because I want you to know that it’s okay to trust again. Trusting Helena Hall is what has changed my life. Everything we do in life is a risk we take. Waking up and even stepping out is a risk we take, in a world plagued by monsters, humans and bests alike. Even sitting here and talking is a risk we are taking. What if as we sit here, a diabolic beast that has never been seen before, monstrously strong and one that not even the S rank powerhouses at the pinnacle of human society cannot defeat suddenly appears and ends our lives? We are always taking a risk in life, whether we consciously or subconsciously take that risk. Trusting is one of the many risks we take anyway. I’m not saying naively trust anyone you meet. However forming a preconceived notion about people just because of how you were treated by someone else in the past may not be a good thing too

I do not know of your past, but the way you looked at me that day I met you when I was in the private jet, caused me to see a reflection of my past self in those eyes of yours. I decided to help you because someone helped me come out of that place you are currently in now. So yes, I have a reason for drawing close to you, you can call it selfish even, however my reason is simple, I want to prove to you that not everyone will treat you like trash or approach you with malicious intentions. Good people exist. My adoptive mother is a perfect example of that’’

[She genuinely cares about you and has no evil intentions towards you. It’s called empathy. Due to having a past of maltreatment and unfairness similar to and even worser than yours, she was able to resonate with your past just by looking into your eyes and exchanging a few words with you. She genuinely wants to help you come out of the hell you are living in. I have been observing you, especially in the area of emotions for a while. I can honestly say you are a wreck that needs help. If you keep shutting people out and keep going down this road, you may become like some of the powerhouses in the universe who are living an extremely lonely life because they didn’t pursue and value relationships as equally as pursuing strength. As powerful as they are, they are extremely depressed. Sentient beings need relationships, friendships and bonds even, as much as Strength is king in the universe]

Kailen’s eyes widened at her words, at the time dilation artifact’s evaluation the dainty lady and the rebuking words of the time dilation artifact.

’’I have been stupid’’ He sighed inwardly. ’’Why did I never see this? If my parents had the capacity to be good to me, why can others not have the same capacity?’’ Kailen berated himself inwardly.

’’Thank You’’ Kailen’s voice was not cold. It was full of warmth.

’’Mmmm. I have learnt to not judge people in the lens of my past experiences or preconceived notions about people, but by their current actions. I may seem like someone who easily trusts people and even look naive on the surface. However, I’m not like that. I lend a helping hand to people who are injured because it’s my code as a Healer. However, it’s different for those I decide to trust and make sacrifices for. After all, I may have healed from my past, but I have learnt lessons from it. So I do not trust easily’’ Arrie’s demeanor had returned to the usual bubbly one.

’’You treat people solely based on their actions and how they treat you’’ Kailen voiced, realizing he had been wrong about this lady being naive and too goody two shoes. People had to earn her trust based on how they treated her.

’’You only made an exception for me, deciding to ignore my cold, cynical and rude treatment towards you because you discerned, I had a similar past to yours and wanted to help me heal?’’

’’You are quick to catch on hehe’’ Arrie giggled as she clapped her hands.

’’Here’s my number. I have to go to the research department asap. Let’s hang out when you are free’’ She wrote her number on a piece of paper, then left the lecture hall, leaving Kailen to his thoughts.

’’Not judging people in the lens of your past or preconceived ideologies about people, but by their current actions. That’s the opposite of what I have been doing all along. Everything she said struck a chord in me, however those words, sealed the deal. The time dilation artifact also warned me that the path I am heading towards will not help me. It seems I need to reorient my mindset. I have been living in bitterness towards everyone I’ve met due to how people treated me in the past?. How naive of me. To think I did not even realize how pathetic I have been. But what if I get hurt and betrayed again by even the people, I have judged worthy of my trust?’’

[It would be their loss. They did not deserve you, so you cut them lose or if you have to eliminate them do so and move on with your life. The hearts of sentient beings are very complex. A friend today may be a foe tomorrow. If a friend turns a foe, treat them as you would treat your foes, and move on with your life. Instead of worrying about who will betray you or stab you in the back tomorrow, focus on treating people based on how they treat you, and if you think someone has earned your trust, consider opening your heart to them, and if that same person turns a foe tomorrow treat them like you will treat a foe. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth

I will grant you a skill that allows you to discern whether or not the motivation behind people’s actions is pure or evil. This skill can also let you know when someone is telling a lie. This will make things easier for you. That way you won’t treat me like some lie detector too Tsk!]

Kailen’s thoughts became clear now ’’That’s it. To judge people based on their present actions and motivations not based on preconceived notions or ideologies about how people from my past treated me. To repay good with good, and evil with evil. An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. From now on, this is how I will evaluate people. Also, even if someone’s motivation for doing something evil to me is good, for instance attacking me because I’m a threat to someone they love, it still will not change the fact that they are trying to harm me, therefore, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth’’

[You have received the skill, Detective’s Gimmick]

’’I don’t feel like I’ve received any skill’’

[ Say ’’yes’’ to assimilate with it idiot! Tsk]

Sighs , ’’Yes’’

Kailen felt some sort of sensation wash over him. That was all. He felt nothing else.

’’Did it assimilate?’’

[It did. When you encounter people, you will instinctively know when someone is telling a lie or telling the truth, the same applies for the motivation behind their actions and words, whether good or bad]

’’I see. thank you, my golden finger’’

[tsk!]

’’I didn’t even ask her name’’ Kailen’s gaze lingered on the sheet the lady had left behind.

’’Her name is Arrie Hall huh, perhaps the next time we meet, since she shared her story, I can feel free to share mine with her. To think she was part of the victims of the incident that killed my parents . Also , she said it happened on her birthday, does that mean... we have the same birthday? Interesting? I suppose she’s a year older than me ,because at the time of the incident she was 16’’

Reaches for his phone ’’How should I store her name’’

[Why don’t you store it as lovergirl, you lovesmitten fool]

Kailen ’’.....’’
