Chapter 128: Princess in Disguise ( 128 )

In the royal castle...

The first light of dawn slipped through the tall windows of the Beastkin Royal Palace, painting the marble floors in golden hues.

Inside her chamber, Ellyn—or rather, Princess Ellyna—had already sprung out of bed before the maids could even knock.

She was humming happily, twirling around with bare feet on the polished floor.

"Hehe~ today’s the day~"

Without waiting for assistance, she darted toward the bath chamber, rushing through her morning shower with the speed of someone on a mission.

Moments later, towel-wrapped and dripping, she sprinted into the grand walk-in wardrobe, eyes scanning the endless rows of dresses and outfits arranged by color, occasion, and formality.

She stopped.

And pouted.

"Ehhh!? All these fancy dresses again!?"

Her tail flicked behind her in frustration.

She tugged at a velvet gown with jeweled embroidery.

"Ughhh, if I wear this, Uncle will definitely say something about the price."

She mimicked Hazuki’s voice with an exaggerated frown.

"’Whoa, kid, you wearing someone’s mortgage!?’"

Ellyn giggled, shaking her head. freewēbnoveℓ.com

"Nope! I need my casual clothes. Where are they?"

Knock knock.

The door creaked open.

Faria stepped inside with her usual composed demeanor—only to pause at the sight of Ellyn, dripping wet and wrapped in a towel, digging through her wardrobe like a raccoon in a treasure chest.

"Princess?" Faria blinked. "It’s... unusual for you to be awake this early."

"Faria!!" Ellyn spun around, tail flicking. "Where are my casual clothes!?"

Faria raised an eyebrow. "They’re in your wardrobe."

"These are all fancy dresses!" Ellyn whined, holding up a silk gown with disgust. "And—wait—why is your armor and sword out!?"

Faria adjusted her gauntlet calmly. "The Royal Elite Assassins will be tailing you from the shadows. I’ll be standing by as well."

"Ehhh!? Not with that clunky full plate armor!!" Ellyn groaned.

"My, my... why so eager to meet your fiancé?" Faria said with a small smirk. "I thought you weren’t serious about him."

"I am serious!" Ellyn huffed. "A pinky promise isn’t something to take lightly!"

Faria chuckled. "Well, you certainly didn’t take it lightly when you trapped him."

"Don’t dodge the question!" Ellyn pointed dramatically. "Where are my casual clothes?"

Faria sighed, stepping toward the rack. "Just wear this one. It’s simple."

Ellyn looked at the offered dress.

It sparkled.

"Too fancy!!" she shouted again.

Faria shook her head, smiling faintly. "Haaa... what a troublesome princess."

Faria calmly stepped toward the wardrobe and picked up the shimmering dress Ellyn had rejected.

"We just remove this layer here... and take off this accessory..."

With swift, practiced hands, she adjusted the outfit, slipping off a few embroidered brooches and untucking some decorative lining.

"See? Now it looks like a casual dress."

Ellyn squinted at it. "No!! I’ll still look like some noble kid trying to act ’normal’!"

Faria sighed. "No can do, Princess. You have to wear this."

"Why!?"

"All of your current dresses—this one included—are enhanced with protective enchantments. And they allow us to track you in case you’re kidnapped again."

Ellyn paused, her ears twitching.

"Ugh!! Fiiiiiine..." she grumbled, snatching the dress from Faria like it had personally insulted her.

"I just wanted a normal dress..." she muttered under her breath, pouting as she turned away.

Faria smiled faintly.

Just as Faria was finishing one last adjustment to the dress, the door creaked slightly.

Soft footsteps echoed through the corridor, followed by a familiar, gentle voice.

"Ellyna~"

Ellyn turned, ears twitching. "Mother..."

Standing at the doorway, already dressed in her morning gown and radiating grace, was Queen Meira. Her hair flowed neatly down her back, and her eyes, though calm, had that unmistakable sparkle in them.

She stepped into the room slowly, glancing between her daughter and Faria.

"What’s with all the fuss this early in the morning?"

Ellyn stomped once and pointed at the wardrobe. "Mother, where are my casual clothes!?"

Queen Meira raised a perfectly shaped brow. "Hmm? Oh... those were already thrown away."

"HUH!? WHY!?"

Meira’s tone remained composed. "Not suitable for a princess like you."

"But Mother!!"

"No ’but,’ Ellyna." Her voice sharpened just slightly. "And you do not raise your voice to your parent like that."

Ellyn’s ears dropped instantly. "...Umm... I’m sorry."

"Good."

Queen Meira walked over, inspected the half-altered dress in Faria’s hands, and nodded in approval.

"Now wear the dress Faria picked for you," she said with finality, "or you won’t be going anywhere today."

Ellyn stood frozen for a second.

Then gave a dramatic sigh. "Fine..."

Queen Meira turned with a gentle smile, walking toward the door.

"Now now, go have breakfast first."

Ellyn hesitated. "But..."

Her mother stopped, glancing back. "What?"

Ellyn twiddled her fingers, her tail curling shyly behind her. "It’s just..."

Meira raised an eyebrow. "Just what?"

"I was... planning to exto—" Ellyn caught herself, eyes darting. "—umm, ask Uncle to treat me to breakfast, lunch, and dinner."

Faria covered her mouth, shoulders shaking.

Queen Meira’s smile didn’t waver. "Oh? That poor boy."

Ellyn pouted. "He owes me!"

"For what, exactly?"

"...For existing?"

"Mmhmm." Meira walked off, her voice floating behind her like silk. "Just don’t bankrupt your fiancé before the wedding."

"MOTHER!!"

"And you will come home before dark."

"But—"

"No. No." Meira’s tone turned razor-sharp for just a second. "Don’t you dare."

Ellyn groaned, shoulders slumping. "Ugh... fine..."

Meira gave a slow nod, then softened her voice again.

"Now be a good girl and behave. At least drink some milk and eat something before you go on your date across town."

Ellyn mumbled something inaudible while tightening her towel around her.

"And," Meira added, eyes narrowing ever so slightly, "how long do you plan on pretending to be a child in front of your pinky promise fiancé?"

"Err... umm..."

Ellyn looked away, her cheeks puffing out, her tail twitching behind her.

Meira sighed and shook her head, finally walking away.

"This stubborn girl..."

"Let’s head to the main dining hall, Ellyna," Queen Meira said firmly, already turning down the corridor.

"Fine..." Ellyn muttered, dragging her feet a little as she followed behind, the "casual" royal dress still fancier than anything Hazuki had ever seen.

"I’m sure your brothers are already there," Meira continued. "And your father too."

"Umm... okay." Ellyn’s ears twitched as she picked up her pace slightly.

"Now faster." Meira said, glancing back with a calm smile that somehow still meant "or else."

Ellyn sighed under her breath.

"Milk first... chaos later..."
