Chapter 153: Loss and Obsession ( 153 )

"WHATTTT!!!"

The furious roar shook the lavish room, rattling the glassware on the nearby table. Marquis Reynard, his face twisted in rage, slammed his heavy fist against the ornate armrest of his seat.

"The people we sent to kidnap Princess Ellyna... they failed!!?"

The butler bowed deeply, his voice smooth and unwavering.

"Yes, my lord. Due to that incident, Princess Ellyna is now heavily guarded."

He paused slightly before continuing.

"And according to our informant, the black-haired human was seen in the capital city before, having a... ’date’ with Princess Ellyna in the capital city."

The marquis’s eyes bulged with fury, veins throbbing at his temple.

"HOW DARE THAT HUMAN TOUCH MY ELLYNA! SHE WAS MINE!!!"

He leapt to his feet, pacing back and forth like a wild beast in a cage.

The butler remained bow, unfazed.

"My lord, please calm yourself."

He spoke with the precision of someone accustomed to his master’s tantrums.

Reynard snarled, snapping his head back toward his servant.

"WHAT ABOUT THE ASSASSIN UNIT WE SENT!!?"

His voice cracked with pure rage.

The butler closed his eyes briefly.

"I am sorry, my lord," he said solemnly.

"Due to the princess having been captured previously, the royal assassin unit was deployed immediately after her return. They exterminated all the assassins we had sent to shadow and eliminate the black-haired human. None survived."

The marquis’s breath heaved in sharp bursts.

"How can you be sure they all died!?"

The butler calmly continued.

"After the black-haired human left the capital city, we dispatched scout teams to find any surviving members of our assassin squad."

He shook his head slowly.

"However, they found no bodies, no lingering magic traces. Everything was wiped clean."

The marquis collapsed back into his seat, seething.

"Those damn royal dogs... how dare they...!!"

"CALL JUNNA HERE!!!"

Marquis Reynard roared, slamming his fist down again.

The butler, still bowed calmly, simply responded,

"She is already here, my lord."

"WHERE!!??"

Reynard snapped, his head jerking around the room wildly.

From the shadowed wall beside the grand hall, a figure materialized quietly—almost like mist dissolving into shape. Junna, the slender rabbit beastkin dressed in dark, black clothes, stepped forward silently. She knelt gracefully without a sound.

"I am here, my lord."

Reynard’s eyes burned with fury.

"JUNNA! WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR SHADOW UNIT!!??"

Junna lifted her head slightly, her eyes sharp but respectful.

"I apologize, my lord," she said, her voice composed.

"It was not only our forces hunting the black-haired human. Duke Belard’s private assassin unit was also pursuing him at the same time."

Reynard gritted his teeth, veins bulging along his temples.

Junna continued, unfazed.

"Furthermore, I refrained from deploying my main elite units."

She lowered her gaze slightly.

"Several of my preliminary shadow operatives were easily eliminated by the Royal Elite Assassin Unit. If I had sent more, they would have been wasted needlessly."

Reynard’s nails dug into the armrests of his chair.

"THEN WHY DIDN’T YOU FOLLOW HIM WHEN HE LEFT THE CAPITAL!?"

Junna responded smoothly, almost coldly:

"We did send several of our agents, my lord."

"However, when we intercepted the carriage he was supposedly riding"

She paused briefly.

"the black-haired human was no longer inside."

Reynard’s eyes narrowed dangerously.

"What do you mean?"

Junna answered without hesitation.

"The carriage was empty. No signs of battle. No traces of magic inside. It was as if he vanished into thin air."

Reynard slammed his fist down again, his fury reaching its peak.

"VANISHED!?"

Junna remained kneeling, unmoved by the explosion of rage.

Deep inside, she wondered too,

How could a mere human escape both their pursuit and the traps laid by two major noble families?

Unless...

Unless he wasn’t as simple as they thought.

"ARRRGGHHH!!!"

Marquis Reynard roared again, the veins in his forehead bulging with rage. He leapt up from his seat, pacing furiously across the grand hall, his cloak swirling behind him like a storm cloud.

"If we kill him—" he snarled.

"My Ellyna would no longer be bound to that cursed pinky promise!!"

He spun around, glaring at everyone present.

"Then I could finally ask for her hand in marriage openly if we failed to kidnap her!!"

The butler remained kneeling, silent as stone. Junna stayed as calm as ever, her sharp red eyes never leaving the floor.

Reynard slammed his hand against a column, cracking the fine marble slightly.

"She is special!!" His voice dropped into a hoarse, hungry whisper.

"The one who can learn any skill... copy any skill... and even... give it to others."

His fingers dug into the column’s surface as he ground his teeth.

"You all understand NOTHING," he hissed.

"With her... I could become invincible! Gain what no other bloodline, no other kingdom could even dream of!"

His breathing came in heavy bursts, anger and greed eating away at his composure. Junna remained kneeling silently, watching, waiting.

The butler finally spoke, his voice low and careful.

"My lord..." He bowed even deeper.

"We understand the importance of Princess Ellyna. We will prepare accordingly."

Reynard turned, wild-eyed.

"THEN HOW!? HOW WILL YOU FIX THIS!? She’s under heavy guard now, and that black-haired human is wandering free!!"

The room fell silent for a tense, heavy moment. Junna slowly lifted her head, her calm voice cutting through the fury like a cold knife.

"...We adapt."

The marquis stared at her, breathing hard. Junna continued.

"If we cannot strike openly, we move from the shadows. Information... pressure... indirect attacks. We make the black-haired human’s life miserable. Exhaust him. Corner him. Until the opportunity presents itself once more."

Reynard’s breathing slowed slightly. His lips curled into a thin, cruel smile.

"Good." He rasped. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

"Very good."

He sat down again, drumming his fingers against the throne-like armrest of his chair.

"Then start now. Begin gathering information. I want to know where that black-haired trash moves, who he speaks to, where he sleeps, what he eats. EVERYTHING."

Junna bowed deeply.

"As you command, my lord."

Without another word, she melted back into the shadows—already vanishing from sight.

Reynard leaned back in his chair, eyes gleaming with a hunger that would not be easily satisfied.

"Soon... Ellyna. You will be mine. And no one—not that filthy human, not even the Royal Family—will stop me."
