Chapter 154: A Quiet Town, a Coming Storm ( 154 )

After Junna disappeared into the shadows, the grand hall sank into a tense silence.

The old butler stepped forward calmly toward the furious Marquis Reynard. He bowed slightly.

"My lord."

Reynard, gripping the armrest of his chair tightly, growled.

"What?"

The butler straightened, smoothly adjusting his gloves.

"According to our informants... it’s no longer only Duke Belard who seeks Princess Ellyna."

Reynard’s eyes narrowed dangerously.

"What do you mean?"

Without hesitation, the butler continued.

"King Aswand of the Human Kingdom has also taken action. He’s sent agents to hunt for the black-haired human."

He paused, letting the implication sink in.

"And... our sources indicate that King Aswand himself has issued a royal decree—proposing marriage between himself and Princess Ellyna."

"WHAATTTT!!!!"

Reynard roared, leaping to his feet so violently that his chair scraped loudly against the marble floor.

"WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN!!?? I DIDN’T HEAR ANYTHING ABOUT THIS!!!"

The butler bowed again, utterly composed despite the outburst.

"Do not worry, my lord."

He spoke with smooth certainty.

"According to our inside sources, Princess Ellyna rejected the proposal immediately. And King Lioness—the current ruler of the Beastkin Kingdom—has already sent an official reply to King Aswand, refusing the marriage."

Reynard’s breath was ragged now, his eyes burning with hatred and frustration.

"Tch... that old fool Aswand..."

He spat on the ground.

The butler’s voice remained low and even.

"However, my lord... it’s unlikely he’ll give up so easily."

Reynard’s fist clenched even tighter.

He knew the kind of man King Aswand was—a ruthless conqueror, one who crushed obstacles without mercy.

And if Aswand had set his sights on Ellyna’s rare gift...

He wouldn’t back down just because of a royal rejection.

Reynard ground his teeth so fiercely that a faint crack echoed in the silence.

The game for Princess Ellyna was no longer just within the borders of the Beastkin Kingdom.

It had become a dangerous battle among kingdoms themselves.

The stakes had risen beyond simple noble politics. It was no longer a quiet hunt—it was a war behind curtains.

Marquis Reynard slammed his fist down again, snarling.

"Damn it all!!"

He paced furiously across the marble floor, the ornate carpet wrinkling under his heavy boots.

"How many do you think will come after my Ellyna now!?" His voice was hoarse with rage.

The butler knelt silently, bowing his head with respect.

"We are still gathering that information, my lord." He spoke smoothly.

"For now, only King Aswand of the Human Kingdom... and your friend."

The word friend carried a subtle, almost mocking edge. Everyone present knew the truth.

That "friend" was nothing more than a secret rival, waiting for a chance to snatch what Reynard coveted most.

Reynard’s face twisted in disgust and fury.

"Shit, shit, shit!!"

He kicked the side of a nearby table, sending an expensive vase crashing to the ground.

The butler remained unmoving.

Reynard bellowed, spinning wildly.

"We need a plan!!"

"I won’t let anyone—ANYONE—get my Ellyna!!"

The flames of obsession burned in his eyes, hotter and more desperate than ever.

In the human kingdom’s royal palace, King Aswand paced anxiously in his lavish throne room, eyes narrowed like a caged lion. His crimson cloak dragged across the polished floor as he barked sharply:

"What about the black-haired human? Have any of our units managed to track and kill him yet!?"

One of his military advisors, dressed in ceremonial armor bearing the royal crest, bowed deeply but stiffly.

"No, Your Majesty."

"According to our informants, he was last seen in the Beastkin Kingdom’s capital city."

Aswand’s eyes flared with fury.

"And!!?"

The advisor swallowed hard.

"After that, we’ve received no further confirmed sightings. No trail. No destination. He vanished."

The king’s voice exploded across the chamber like thunder.

"STUPID! IDIOT! PIECE OF TRASH!!"

He threw a golden goblet across the room, which shattered against a stone pillar, wine splattering across the marble floor like blood.

"You let a single low-class foreigner slip from our grasp?!?"

Another advisor, trembling, stepped forward with a scroll in shaky hands.

"Your Majesty..." he bowed deeply. "According to our intelligence unit, several other nobles within our kingdom—"

"—and certain Beastkin nobles as well—"

"—have begun moving against Princess Ellyna."

"They are now sending their own units to locate the black-haired human."

Aswand’s face twisted in rage.

"ARGHHHHH!!!"

He gripped the edge of his throne so tightly that the polished wood cracked beneath his fingers.

"Useless. All of you are USELESS!"

He swung around with a roar.

"CALL THE HERO PARTY HERE!!"

Every nearby knight and court officer jolted at the command, sprinting through corridors as royal messengers scattered in all directions.

The hero party—the gifted foreigners brought into this world with mighty powers—would now be dragged into this kingdom’s deadly game.

The hunt for the black-haired human was no longer a secret or quiet affair. It was about to turn into a crusade.

Meanwhile, in the peaceful center of Macia Town, the morning sun filtered softly through drifting clouds. Birds chirped happily. Merchants opened stalls, and townsfolk bustled about, beginning their day, unaware of the brewing storm.

And amid the calm, Hazuki sprawled lazily on a wooden bench, hands behind his head, eyes half-closed as he gazed up at the clear blue sky.

"Haaaah... this is good," he muttered, exhaling with contentment.

Beside him, Ridan floated down like a grumpy raincloud, plopping next to him, arms crossed and annoyed. He hovered just above the bench.

He sighed heavily.

"I still can’t believe... instead of finding an inn, you just slept out here."

Hazuki lazily turned his head.

"Oi! Not my fault, okay? I couldn’t find any inn."

Ridan glared.

"No, dumbass."

"You sat here, said ’this spot is comfortable,’ and then just fell asleep like a damn rock."

He flailed his misty arms.

"You already have a ton of money now! Go rent a bed, you idiot!!"

Hazuki shrugged, unfazed.

"But this bench was free."

He grinned mischievously.

Ridan groaned loudly.

"You’re hopeless. I swear, if someone mugged you in your sleep, I’d have to float your stupid corpse back to the guild just to claim your death benefit."

Hazuki stretched like a lazy cat.

"But they didn’t, so it’s fine."

Ridan muttered under his breath, annoyed.

"I hate that your dumb luck actually works."

They sat in silence, watching the morning hustle of life around them, blissfully unaware of the web of assassins, nobles, and heroes converging just beyond their peaceful view.
