Chapter 165: Auditions for mascots.
At work, Mei Mei had no idea what tragedy had befallen Mo Jiu. She was too busy handling auditions for the camp mascots. Eight people had turned up for the job interview, including Han Rui.
Mei Mei and the mascot related team had chosen to use the gravity playground room. The plan was for the mascots to show off their skills on the ground, like singing, dancing and exciting a crowd. The second part of the interview involved entering the playground where children were to show off their interaction skills.
The eight contestants that had already been squeezed into fat, soft costumes were waiting outside, each ready to prove that they were the right person for the role.
Mei Mei was opening a bottle of water when the first contestant entered the room. As soon as he appeared, the children and a few adults that were playing paused their games. It was not surprising because a big red creature with four arms and four eyes was very outstanding.
One little girl even started to cry and a camp counselor had to rush in to comfort her.
"Take the head off." Mei Mei instructed.
The person in the costume too it off and immediately, the jaws of the mascot team dropped.
"Zhou...Zhou....Zhou...." Lin Jianwei stammered.
"Zhou Zemin." Mei Mei leaned her head towards him and reminded him of the full name just in case he had forgotten it.
Zhou Zemin was a former basketball star. He had not just played locally he had played with international teams of other empires. He even had one of those famous championship rings. He had been a national star until he broke his knees back to back and age caught up with him.
A combination of injuries, physical decline, competition and aging had led to his retirement. He had returned to the empire, hosted a few sports shows but nothing was permanent. Eventually, he just faded from the lime light completely.
Mei Mei looked scrolled through the hologram projection coming from the computer tablet in front of her. "Mr. Zhou Zemin, as excited as we are to see you, I don’t see your name on the list." She said.
"I registered under a false name, Ou Min." He replied.
Mei Mei’s mouth parted a little. She had wondered who had such a weird name with no personal details attached to their application. Seven contestants had been sent by the government office so she had not questioned the list because their screening was even more thorough than hers.
"Why did you pick four arms?" He Zhenyu asked him.
This was because all the contestants had been given an option to choose which mascot they wanted to be.
"He is tall and strong." Zhou Zemin replied.
There was a lack of enthusiasm in his responses which made the mascot team of judges frown.
"Uhm, Mr. Zhou, I hope that you understand that this job will require enthusiasm. You must interact with children, high five a lot, roar, run around a little. You have to boost morale. You don’t seem to have a lot of energy right now." Mei Mei commented.
Zhou Zemin smiled tensely. "I am sorry, I am feeling a bit awkward honestly. I used to be the guy that gives the mascot a high five and now I am the mascot."
Lin Jianwei nodded. "You used to be a superstar....no...you are a superstar. You are still a hero, having you here will be a dream come true."
Mei Mei leaned forward, looked at Jianwei and raised her eyebrows curiously. When had they decided that he was hired?
Lin Jianwei blushed and looked down. Obviously, he had overstepped his bounds and he was being unprofessional.
Wu Qing, with a soft smile on her face tried to make Zhou Zemin feel at home. "Mr. Zemin, this job is not complicated. The biggest requirements are enthusiasm and love for children. So far, they are our largest customer base. Some of them will beg you to pick them up. One might stick to you and refuse to let go. Another might rub snot on your trousers or shirt. You cannot lose your temper, scream or harm the child."
Zhou Zemin nodded. "I like children, I read the job requirements and duties expected of the mascot three times. I know that I am not the sunniest guy but I believe that I can do this job."
"Show us what you have then." Mei Mei played the music, ready to see how he could boost morale.
Zhou Zemin begged to be excused. When he returned after ten seconds, he had a ball in hand and he performed some tricks. Then he tried to do the worm but the costume was not very flexible and neither was he.
He had to be helped up by Jianwei and Zhenyu and he moved to the zero gravity playground. The children got a kick out of seeing the red monster as they had started calling it.
Some floated away from it and others towards it. Everyone wanted to touch the costume. Away from the judgemental eyes of the mascot committee Zhou Zemin came to life. He played with the toddlers, lifting them high, playing hide and seek and making loud villain kind of laughs.
In the end, he was not so bad.
A second contestant entered the room, it was Han Rui and he was the dragon blast. As soon as Wu Qing saw his face, she gave him the same pass that Lin Jianwei had given Zhou Zemin. She was blushing when he did a five minute traditional classic dance.
After Han Rui entered another shocking individual, the former songstress Haena. She had not bothered to hide her face and her mascot costume was very tight. It was a bodysuit so she moved with ease.
Haena had achieved all there was to achieve in the music industry and then she retired. Over the years, Mei Mei had seen her on various occasions at her ancestral home or some parties for the elite.
"Aunt Hyena..." she blurted out in shock.
Haena frowned, she approached the desk, walking like a cat that was modeling in high heels. "Haena, it is Haena. Mei Mei, why do you still call me Hyena?" She turned around to show off the tail that was attached to her costume. "I am here for the role of Xylene."
"It is not a role." Lin Jianwei chimed in.
Wu Qing kicked him on the leg. She was a Haena fan, and given the relationship between their boss and Haena, obviously she was going to get the job.
"I am old enough to play the role of Huzi Whiskers mother."
Lian Jianwei opened his mouth to correct her and he earned himself another kick from Wu Qing.
"I will go play with the kids now, I brought my granddaughter to play in your pool. I cannot believe that you did not send me an invitation to your baby gym." She sashayed away, hips swaying from side to side.
"We are going to have to make adjustments for her in the script, aren’t we?" He Zhenyu mumbled.
Suddenly Wu Qing hissed, a frown dotted her face. "Am I the only one that thinks the contestants are weird? Two former celebrities!! Do people like that upload their resumes on the government website?"
