Chapter 219: Form a Mate Bond

Aware that their bodies wouldn’t disappear unless they were burned or the sun came up and shone on them, turning them to ashes, Vazer stood frozen. He had never felt so dizzy; his mind felt like it wasn’t his own as he shifted his gaze from the bodies on the floor to the one hung at the entrance—his sister, Dinari. freewebnøvel.com

Understanding that one of his twin sisters was missing, a faint ember of hope ignited in his heart. He was about to dash upstairs and look for her, clinging to the slight hope that she was still alive, even if terribly injured, when he paused. His gaze caught a piece of paper stabbed into the center table on the first floor.

He instantly dashed forward to grab the piece of paper. The knife on top of it bore werewolf symbols—ones he was vastly familiar with. He ignored the bloody knife, though it made his gaze darken and filled him with the urge to lash out in anger. The possibility that Tinari was still alive was the only reason he hurried to read what was written on the paper.

’If you want her to live... you’ll do exactly what I say!’

He didn’t recognize the handwriting, but who else could be behind it but Javi, whom he had met earlier that night? Vazer realized that not only had Javi used the fake survivor and Laurel’s betrayal to confirm that Vazer was behind Masdaw’s attack, but he had also gone ahead to attack everyone Vazer cared about.

Vazer’s expression was blank as he stared at the air in front of him, holding the piece of paper. His red eyes seemed even redder, so much so that no white part of his eyes could be seen as he squeezed the paper in his hands and simply stood there.

At that point, even thinking was something he found hard to do. All he felt was undiluted rage—something he logically knew he shouldn’t feel, as it would only mean playing into Javi’s hands. But regardless of how hard he tried, he couldn’t help it. All he felt was nothing but rage.

It would be a lie for Violet to say that she wasn’t scared.

She had just shouted "NO" at Cain, who, instead of reacting, simply stood with his hands in his pockets, staring at her without doing anything else. He didn’t even open his mouth to speak, which worried her even more, considering the fact that the new personality she had met had almost strangled her to death.

"If you truly see me as a lover, then you’ll compromise! You can’t always have everything your way..." Violet began, her voice trembling with anxiety.

"I’m your mate, and my presence helps your beast... I understand this! I even read about it... but what do I get?" Violet asked, on the verge of panic.

"What if I get kidnapped again or something worse happens?" she pleaded, her expression desperate as she continued to speak, about to go on when Cain interrupted her with a question that surprised but elated her.

"...So what form of magic would you like to learn?" he asked, his voice soft, as if he was indeed considering allowing her to learn from Uva. It sounded like he had listened to all the points she had made and had been convinced.

"Go ahead... TELL ME..."

Violet didn’t hesitate or think too much before responding.

"I saw Uva walk through walls when she delivered food to me! It could be useful!" she said, wanting to add the ability to change her face too but entirely confident that Cain would refuse the moment she mentioned it.

"Really? Just that?" Cain asked, walking closer to her. But instead of moving toward the bed, he headed toward the study and leaned against the table, increasing the distance between them again.

The temptation was there to ask for more, but Violet simply shook her head.

"No! Just that!" she responded, but the words were barely out of her mouth when Cain raised his arms and folded them in front of him.

"You escaped once... what’s the guarantee that you won’t do it again?" he asked, his gaze intense, showing just how much attention he was giving her as he waited for her answer—one that Violet couldn’t quickly give.

...Indeed, there’s no guarantee. Once I can walk through walls, no room or cell could hold me.

"I-I promise," Violet responded in a shaky tone as she stepped closer to him, placing her hand on his chest until they were barely a few inches apart. She was aware that if she wanted to get what she wanted, Cain had to get what he wanted.

"I-I’ll be good! Our relationship would be even better," she continued.

"...Moreover, it’s not like I have anywhere else to go!" The thought of her parents flashed in her mind, and it was enough for Cain to see how sincere she was. For a second, his mind began to change.

He was aware that once Uva taught her how to use the magic in her blood, it would only take a matter of time before she created innovative ways to do other things—like passing her hand through objects or, worse, turning her body invisible for brief moments if her bloodline was strong enough. It was something he wasn’t sure he could risk.

Violet waited patiently for an answer, only to see a huge frown appear on Cain’s face after a few seconds of silence. She wasn’t too happy about it.

Leaning her body into him even more until her entire body was plastered against his, she raised her eyes to look at him, misty with tears as she pleaded.

"Please... you can trust—"

But she didn’t finish before Cain shook his head, cutting her off.

"...I can’t!" he said, ignoring the way she jerked back in shock at his frank statement as he continued speaking. "If you want me to trust you, then we should complete the mate bond..."

At this point, Violet was so alarmed that she couldn’t help but take a few steps back, regardless of the way Cain’s gaze darkened with disapproval as she moved away from him.

Violet was well aware of what the mate bond was—she had read about it. She was also aware that once the mate bond was finalized on both ends, she might as well completely forget ever being able to get away from Cain.

Yes, she was attracted to him, and every time he touched her, she felt her entire body melt. But at the same time, she was aware of how dangerous he was, even to her. She had feelings in her heart, but how could she ignore the warning signs in her mind?

"This! Isn’t it too early to—" she began, but she didn’t get to finish.

"You’re not willing!" Cain said in a colder tone than he intended, staring at her, shocked at the rage swelling up from deep in his chest. It was a feeling he had felt toward others but never toward Violet.

A mate bond was a commitment he knew about and one he was willing to make... but not Violet. This made him feel like while he cared about her enough to do so, she didn’t feel the same way. His displeasure increased as thoughts began to flash in his mind, wondering if the way she had been acting for the few weeks since she got back had been nothing but pretense.

Violet, again, couldn’t stop herself from stepping back at the sight of Cain’s completely darkened gaze. His eyes were still golden brown, but the aura around him might as well have been red.
