Mated to the Mad Lord-Chapter 229: Blurred Truth
Chapter 229: Blurred Truth
She had just been silently hoping and praying that she would be too small to be seen and would be overlooked.
Hopefully completely ignored as he concentrated more on the door and breaking it down, even as the sound of breaking bones echoed in her ears.
But just when all her attention had been on waiting for her hopes to come to pass, she suddenly heard silence.
Where previously there had been loud groans, growling, and shrieks, suddenly there was nothing—so quiet that she would have believed she was the only one in the room if she wasn’t certain she wasn’t.
Hesitant at first but unable to hesitate any longer after a few seconds, and not knowing whether the silence was a good thing or the direct opposite,
Violet slowly raised her head only to freeze, her hands tightening and squeezing each other as her heart began to pound in her chest. She watched the beast, who stood on four hind legs, its midnight fur gleaming and completely red eyes staring right at her.
It was the afternoon, and the sun was shining brightly through the windows, allowing her to see the frightening beast in front of her clearly. He simply stood there, watching her, even as she stared right back.
’If Cain is the one in control... I’ll survive!’ she realized with a sinking feeling in the very depths of her heart.
’...But if it’s the one that broke my legs, then I’m dead—nothing more than a bone he could use to pick his ginormous teeth!’
At first, all Violet could do was shake, trying to evade its gaze and hoping that it would ignore her, only to change her mind the very next second as she locked her gaze on him.
At that point, she still felt an enormous amount of pain, coupled with bone-wrenching exhaustion.
If she was going to die, instead of trying to avoid something that could clearly not be avoided, she simply decided to accept her fate even faster than usual.
But just as the thought popped into her mind, her gaze fixed on the beast, her heart nearly leaped out of her chest as she watched it take a step forward toward her.
One step, and the entire room trembled, making her heart leap into her throat as she scrambled off the ground, whatever courage she had been holding onto disappearing in the blink of an eye.
It didn’t help when it took another step. By then, Violet was already stuttering aloud, falling back onto the bed when she couldn’t bring herself to stand too long on her sprained leg, while the other hurt enough to bring tears to her eyes.
"Ca-Cain?" she gasped, even as she watched the beast slowly move closer. The way the room continued shaking terrified her, making her think it was about to collapse.
A few seconds later, she watched with a shocked look on her face as the beast walked closer, shrinking bit by bit with each step. The sight made her relax more than before, though she still wondered why it kept advancing toward her.
Although no longer the size of a small house, it was still much bigger than even the largest wolf she had ever seen by the time it reached her.
The red eyes, a reminder of the trauma she had experienced, made her want to shift her gaze, hoping she wasn’t about to be gobbled up, only to watch the beast lie down in front of her. Its tail wagged excitedly, and its red tongue lolled out in a way that would have made it seem like a dog—if not for the teeth and mouth, which served as a reminder that two bites would be enough to swallow her whole.
Violet’s eyes widened further in curiosity the longer she stared and was stared at. The way the beast kept nudging its head forward while licking at her legs, tickling slightly, made her recall something she had forgotten.
It can heal!!!
The thought had just occurred to her when she immediately and tentatively stretched her face forward to be healed, even though she knew that her dislodged teeth wouldn’t grow back from the hole left behind.
The pain in her leg surprisingly reduced to the barest minimum just before her face was also licked, though the memory of what had happened remained.
"Ca-Cain!" she softly called out, aware that it had to be the one that didn’t want her dead who would bother to heal her, only to watch the beast immediately shake its head as he watched her with intelligent eyes that clearly understood what she meant.
"You’re not Cain?" she asked, about to slap her cheek for expecting a reply, especially since he was in beast form, only to be even more surprised when she watched the beast nod its head again, a response that both surprised and astonished her.
Beyond that, it made her realize that Cain’s problem was much worse than she had previously thought.
’He’s not Cain and definitely not the one that wanted to strangle me,’ Violet thought, considering the soft gaze that stared at her, desperately begging for attention.
Almost as if understanding what it wanted, she stretched out her hand and touched its head, shocked by how soft its fur was, and even more surprised by how excited it seemed at the touch.
Leaning in even more, almost like it was begging for more, which Violet willingly gave, stretching out both hands as she scratched its fur and rubbed her fingers into it.
’As long as you’re not as two-faced as your human body... we’ll get along fine,’ Violet thought to herself, aware that the worst thing that could happen was if the beast suddenly turned feral and bit her hands off.
"Good boy!" she mumbled under her breath, smiling from ear to ear as she rubbed against its fur even more, a hint of a bittersweet expression on her face.
’All that’s left is to figure out how to make it transform back to its human form—the Cain that would rather see me alive and well!’ she thought to herself with a serious expression.
**********
Early the next morning, after storing away the bodies of his family, the next thing Vazer did was call a Red Council meeting in the ancestral hall.
Outrightly accusing Javi of killing his family while using his closest elite guard to betray him and draw him away.
Easily and clearly, Vazer began to explain what had happened, anger brimming in his eyes as he focused on the other Lords instead of the huge smirk on Javi’s face, which had been there since he walked into the hall and sat down.
"Laurel convinced me to visit the survivor just in case Javi couldn’t ensure his safety. To ensure that no attack would be successful, just in case one was carried out—only for Laurel to suddenly turn against me!"
"Not only that... Javi was waiting for me there and even admitted that the survivor had died from his injuries."
"By the time I got home, my family was dead!" he said, not mentioning that one was still missing.
"Isn’t this too coincidental?" he asked, his voice low as he looked at each of the Lords, not expecting them to outrightly side with him but expecting that they would see reason.
But he had just spoken when Javi chuckled—a low, eerie sound that somehow carried as he leaned forward, elbows on the table, resting his head against them as he fixed his gaze on Vazer, who was barely holding himself together by a very thin piece of thread.
"What? That can’t be!" he sighed, his smirk growing bigger, his eyes slitted in amusement.
"Not only is the survivor still alive, but I was with Haynar and Mooza last night! I invited them to see a new piece of art I just acquired!"
But what was even more shocking was that Javi wasn’t done speaking when Lady Mooza and Lord Haynar nodded their heads to confirm that what Javi said was the truth.
