My Baby Daddy Isn't Human-Chapter 61: Curious & Concern
Raelynn let out a long breath, sprawled on the bed with her eyes fixed on the ceiling. The room felt smaller with every passing hour of doing nothing. Sloane had firmly advised her to rest, pointing out her sore back as the main reason she shouldn't move around too much. Though she was grateful for the care, boredom gnawed at her. Every second stretched into minutes, and every minute felt like an hour. She shifted slightly, wincing as her back protested. Staying in bed was frustrating, but it was better than enduring pain while moving around.
Eventually, nature called, and she decided she couldn't avoid getting up any longer. Bracing herself, Raelynn swung her legs over the edge of the bed and stood, the ache in her back sharp but bearable. She shuffled to the bathroom, holding onto the wall for extra support.
When she returned, Raelynn froze in surprise at the sight before her. Elion was sitting on the edge of the bed, looking relaxed but with a wary glint in his eyes. He glanced up the moment she stepped out of the bathroom, the intensity in them enough to make her stomach flip.
"You're back," he said, standing abruptly as if caught doing something he shouldn't.
"Clearly," Raelynn replied, chuckling softly. "What are you doing here?"
Instead of answering, Elion moved to her side and gently grasped her arm to support her. "Come on. Let's get you back to bed."
Raelynn blinked at him. "I can walk, you know. My legs aren't broken."
Elion didn't respond, just motioned her back to the bed with a seriousness that made her want to laugh at his insistence. Once they reached the bed, Elion carefully helped her sit down and began fluffing her pillows.
Elion had been so focused on making sure Raelynn was comfortable that he didn't realize how close the pillows were to the headboard. As he fluffed them up with perhaps a little too much enthusiasm, he guided her back without checking the clearance. The result? Raelynn's head tapped against the wooden frame with a light thud.
"You really don't have to – ouch!" she exclaimed, more startled than in pain.
Elion stopped, his eyes widening in horror. "Damn it. Are you okay?"
Raelynn rubbed the back of her head and gave him a small smile. "Well, that's one way to make someone relax."
Elion immediately leaned in, his brows furrowed with concern. "Let me see," he said, his voice softer now. Without waiting for permission, his hand moved to the back of her head, tilting it gently as his eyes searched for where she'd hit it.
Raelynn froze at his closeness, her breath hitching. She could feel the warmth of his fingers against her skin, his gaze stayed locked on her, full of concentration. His touch was surprisingly tender, as if he were afraid of hurting her further.
"It's nothing," she said quickly, trying to laugh it off, though her voice wavered.
Elion didn't pull away just yet. His dark eyes searched hers for a moment, his thumb brushing lightly against her hairline. "You sure?"
"Uh-huh," she whispered, her face heating up as the silence grew thick until Elion stepped back, coughing softly.
Elion muttered something under his breath and stepped back, allowing her to adjust the pillows herself. She made herself comfortable, leaning back with a relieved sigh. "Seriously, Elion, what are you doing here?"
He crossed his arms and looked at her, his brow furrowing slightly. "Can't I be in my own home?"
Raelynn raised an eyebrow. "You didn't go to work?"
Elion hesitated for a moment before replying. "No. I don't have that much work to do today."
Raelynn nodded, seemingly satisfied with his answer. But in the back of her mind, she couldn't help but hope there was another reason for him being there. Maybe he stayed because he was worried about her. Her heart fluttered at the thought, but she quickly pushed it aside. Since when did she start romanticizing everything he did? It was ridiculous.
The sound of the door opening drew their attention. Sloane made her way inside, her cheerful energy immediately filling the space. "Well, well, what do we have here?" she asked with a cheeky grin, clearly entertained. Her gaze flicked between Raelynn and Elion before settling on him.
"What brings you here, Sloane?" he asked, looking far from pleased.
Sloane blinked, her head tilting slightly as if she couldn't believe the question. "What do you think, genius? I'm here to check on Raelynn. To make sure she's okay."
Elion glanced away, a faint hint of pink coloring his ears. He muttered something under his breath, clearly flustered by the obvious answer.
Sloane smirked knowingly. "Don't worry, big guy. I've got this handled. But shouldn't you be at the office?"
Elion's jaw tightened, and he repeated the same excuse he had given Raelynn earlier. "I don't have much work to do today."
Sloane's grin widened as she leaned against the doorframe. "Really? Not because you were worried or anything?"
Elion's sharp glare could have cut through steel. "Enough, Sloane."
Sloane laughed, clearly enjoying herself. "Alright, alright. I'll stop." But honestly, it's nice to see you showing some concern for someone other than yourself for once."

He got up in an instant, his towering frame suddenly looming over Sloane. "I'm leaving."
Sloane stepped aside, still chuckling as Elion brushed past her. "Don't be a stranger," she called after him, her voice dripping with playful mockery. Once the door closed behind him, Sloane turned to Raelynn, her expression softening. "You know he's staying because he's worried about you, right?"
She stared blankly for a moment, her bewilderment written all over her. "What? He said he doesn't have much work to do."
Sloane rolled her eyes. "And you believed him? Sweetheart, Elion doesn't stick around unless he has a damn good reason. Trust me on this."
Raelynn's cheeks flushed as she glanced at the door, her mind buzzing. Could Sloane be right? Or was she just reading too much into things again? Either way, she couldn't deny the warmth blooming in her chest at the idea.
