Chapter 44: A Gift For Karsten

(Arata)

I had opted for flared jeans, pumps and a laced top for travelling. Karsten had informed me that we would be checking into a hotel, meeting his family for dinner at that hotel and spending the weekend at his mother’s villa.

So I had plenty of time to get ready. The cold devil I called boss was, as usual, in a black button-up and dress pants. Today he had Rayben’s on and that damn cologne of his hit me in full force as I settled beside him and greeted.

"Good evening, Sir."

The head of the snake tattoo sneaked out of his shirt and seemed to be directly hissing at me.

"Evening and call me Karsten when we are alone so you get accustomed to it while we reach Sparia," he instructed as the car began to move.

Sparia was about an hour’s flight from Marica City. The cultural roots were thick and people spoke Spanish. Karsten’s family was from there and held a high status as far as I had learnt. Not much was publicly known about the Chevalier family.

"Alright."

The ride to his private jet was calm and quiet with him buried in his phone mostly. I stared outside, seeing how the trees had shed their leaves, preparing for the winter season.

Soon, we arrived at the airport and were guided to his sleek jet, the same colour as his coffee. The dying rays of the sun reflected off the shining surface as we climbed the stairs and entered the posh interior.

The shining black leather seats were comfortable and inviting as Karsten let me take charge and settle in the one I wanted.

Balancing my bag on my arm, I adjusted my glasses and took the window seat. Karsten settled opposite mine so we faced each other.

His toned legs spread out but didn’t touch me. His elbow rested on the armrest while his fingers tapped his ample lips.

Olphi had joined us, his bald head appeared like a large boiled potato as he moved away to seat himself far ahead.

Once the plane began to taxi and take off I opened the zipper of my bag, took out the ebony leather box and extended it towards Karsten.

"Here!"

Surprise made his eyes enlarge as he remained transfixed in his place for a few seconds. I began to feel stupid with my hand extended, and just when I thought he wasn’t going to accept it, he reached out and clasped his slender fingers around the box and accepted it.

"You didn’t listen." He didn’t waste time in inquiring if it was for him, he knew it.

I just smugly shrugged my shoulders and answered.

"I take my job seriously."

His mouth twitched. Was he holding back a smile?

His eyes dipped to the box in his hand as he elegantly twirled it so the lock faced him.

I held my breath as his thumb nudged at the silver lock.

Unlocking the small latch, Karsten lifted the lid. As much as he tried to hide it, his curiosity peaked through his dark lenses.

From what I had come to know about him, he liked limited edition stuff and this watch was just that. I had come across it a few days ago and instantly loved it.

I had to pull in some favours to inquire about it since Rolex had made only three of them.

The vibe fitted this handsome man who loved wearing the darkest colour to exist.

The Rolex was all chrome with hands appearing like silver streaks against the dark background. The time only appeared when the wearer directly stared at the dial; otherwise, the dial remained like a tar-filled circle.

The fine chain snugly sat against the skin of the wearer and determined the person’s mood according to the heat sensors.

It occasionally revealed a quote sensing the mood of the wearer including quirky jokes. I could bet the watch would give him countless jokes, assuming he was usually in a bad mood.

Trying to keep a blank face, Karsten pulled it out of his box and placed it on his hand, watching it intently for a while. ƒгeewёbnovel.com

Quietly placing it on his thick wrist Karsten clamped it closed and twisted his wrist several times. It was lightweight and sat snugly on his arm.

A thin line formed where his lips were, and my heart drowned as his eyes swirled towards me. He quietly asked.

"How did you get this, Arata?"

My jaw dropped in disappointment.

"Why?"

"It’s a limited edition, A7-10. It’s not easy to come by." His face remained blank as usual but his eyes held this sheen of excitement.

"Are you implying I am poor or that I don’t have connections to acquire a gift for my boyfriend? Although he is fake and seems disappointed with the gift," I blurted out, leaning back in my seat and trying not to sulk like a kid.

He pursed his lips again and hid the smile trying to slip past at my answer.

"I implied none of that and I am not disappointed. But you shouldn’t have spent so much money on buying this. Your money should be spent on yourself..."

I vigorously shook my head.

"Tch! It’s my money, let me decide where to use it. If I had said the same when you bought me the pendant, would you have agreed?"

I countered and a rare smile did slip out. He seemed even more handsome when he smiled, the hard contours of his face ever so beautifully softened and his eyes wrinkled at the sides, becoming tinier.

"Fine, but not again."

"I can’t promise that," I pointed out. But he was firm.

"I won’t accept the next time, Arata. I am serious so not again. I don’t like gifts."

Predictable.

Was there anything His Highness liked except brooding and forcing his opinion on others?

"As you say, Your Highness." I deliberately rolled my hand forward with the twitch of my lips and he just rolled his eyes at me.

Wow! Karsten Chevalier rolled his eyes at me. I guess he wasn’t so bad.

I was reminded of what Miranda had said; there was a heart there if you break the tough exterior.

But what lay inside that heart? Only time will tell if he will ever open up.
