Chapter 37: Chapter 37: I Was Here Four Years Ago (Part 1)

Is this woman made of water? Why does she cry so easily?

Asher Land was somewhat upset, roughly pulling her into his embrace.

"Let go of me!" Sophie Smith struggled, but she couldn’t break free from his strong grip.

"Stay put." He stopped her tantrum.

Today, she was really exhausted, physically and mentally drained. She stayed in his embrace, strangely feeling at ease in his broad chest.

"Come back with me." He reiterated, and she didn’t resist, allowing him to hold her hand and lead her out of the hospital.

Asher Land did not let the driver follow him to Southern County, not even his trusted assistant Robert Williams, who usually accompanied him.

She sat in the car, turning her head towards the window, watching the scenery outside swiftly receding.

"Can you give me some space?" After a long while, she spoke.

His visit to Southern County today was beyond her expectations. Fortunately, he didn’t meet her family. She had to admit that her current identity could not see the light of day.

"I’m not your puppet, I have my own thoughts, I..."

The harsh sound of the brakes echoed in the silent night, and due to inertia, Sophie Smith’s body lurched forward.

She grabbed her seatbelt in shock, looking at him in disbelief, only to see his face already coated with a layer of anger.

Asher Land’s hand gripped the steering wheel tightly, the veins on his hand bulging; it was clear he was angry.

Very angry, very angry.

He had been busy all day, driving for three hours to Southern County, not to hear her say these things.

"You want freedom?" His gaze was fixed on her face, "We’ll talk about it when you stop challenging me."

To this day, there’s nothing Asher Land can’t achieve, no person he can’t obtain, so conquering this little wildcat is only a matter of time.

She couldn’t just obediently let him toy with her; she really couldn’t.

She thought Asher Land would explode in anger, but he didn’t. He parked the car on the roadside, pulled out a cigar, saw her frowning in displeasure, hesitated, and put it back.

"I was here four years ago." He suddenly spoke.

Sophie Smith’s body jolted, her fists clenched tightly, her nails deeply embedded in her flesh.

She said nothing, waiting for him to continue.

"Do you see that building?" Asher Land gestured with his eyes, and Sophie looked in the direction he indicated.

The Golden Era Building.

That building was completed four years ago, it is the most luxurious building in Southern County and the tallest in the world. When it was built, it caused a nationwide sensation because no one expected the Golden Era Consortium to build the world’s tallest building in such an inconspicuous small county. But on second thought, what’s so strange about it? The Golden Era Consortium has money and power, investing in a building is just a game for them.

Originally, the plot where the Golden Era Building stands was full of ordinary residential areas. After the relocation, most residents moved away with a large sum of money, but some didn’t.

Like Sophie Smith’s family.

This building was constructed by Asher Land for his mother. He had promised his mother that when he was capable, he would not let her suffer anymore, but she never lived to see that day.

Asher Land gazed at the building, and the feeling of loss in his heart erupted instantly. His mother had always longed to return to Southern County, her beautiful hometown, but she never made it back. Not even her ashes returned, scattered across that unfamiliar land in Europe.
