Chapter 47 -47 Another Colleague?_1

“However, the more I listen to Tang Ken’s description of the prison, the more it feels eerily familiar,”

Colin felt increasingly uneasy as he listened to Tang Ken speak.

This…

Could it really be the same dungeon?

With his doubts, Colin asked a few more questions and was able to confirm that damn, it indeed was the same old place, but not the same cage, and without contracting “Beast Transformation Syndrome”.

Moreover, through his exchanges with Tang Ken, he had cleared up some confusion.

For instance, Tang Ken had already died once, at the very same location where the signal had been lost last time.

As for how he died…

It was quite close to what Colin had previously conjectured.

After waking up, Tang Ken realized he couldn’t send out any information, but he could locate the Bonfire, and he had a mission to reach the place where the Bonfire was.

So, he immediately left the group, deciding to start his journey.

But as soon as he stepped out, he was dragged into a hole by a group of starving rioters and was invited to a grand feast.

The main ingredient was himself.

The only piece of luck was that, as he was bound to a stone table and cut open to witness his own intestines being eaten in front of his eyes, he freed his own handcuffs, struggled violently, and then got his head smashed by a rock and died.

When he opened his eyes again, the agony had ended. He found himself in a dungeon, beginning his second life and being dragged out to be escorted somewhere.

Compared to those rioters, the guards in the dungeon were much nicer.

Listening to Tang Ken’s continuous reports, Colin felt that, looking at his own stroke of luck, it seemed not too bad.

At least he didn’t have to worry about being eaten by someone on his way…

“Oh right, captain, I just remembered, I might have seen a time traveler in that hole.”

Time traveler? The information in his mind made Colin startle, thinking of the possible existence of other former colleagues, he promptly responded, “Tell me more about this time traveler.”

“I’m not sure, I just vaguely remember seeing someone dressed like a monk down there, he was highly respected.”

“A monk?”

Colin grew even more puzzled.

From what he knew, this world’s aesthetic was close to that of ancient Western civilization, or more precisely, it aligned with fantasy works depicting ancient Western civilization.

The sudden appearance of a monk seemed slightly off.

So the chances were high that it was someone from his own country.

“I can roughly confirm that he was wearing a kasaya, like the one Monk Tang from Journey to the West wears, though that was all he wore, exposing his left chest. I didn’t see anything else before being tied up.”

“Understood.”

Colin stroked his chin, guessing that this person was likely “The Glutton,” a suspected former colleague or other time traveler?

“By the way, about that additional mission from Bonfire Company, to capture followers of ‘The Glutton,’ had the company already discovered something at the time?”

As thoughts whirled, he decided to go investigate there after he had rescued Tang Ken.

From Tang Ken’s description, “The Glutton” didn’t seem to be overwhelmingly powerful and was within a manageable level.

“With my current strength, even if I really face a fully empowered D Level employee, I can escape even if I can’t defeat him.”

“Time Stasis” might not have given him unparalleled power, but it did give him the capital to flee when in danger.

Plus, he planned to use a Book of Fate before heading out to test his luck; there shouldn’t be a problem.

With that in mind, Colin gathered his thoughts and turned to look out of the carriage again.

At this moment, they were passing through a higher terrain where he could clearly see the outline of a towering city in the distance sprawling over the land.

The city walls were a grayish-black, and looking from afar, the patrol soldiers upon them appeared no larger than ants. Additionally, there were defensive fortifications resembling giant crossbows.

Through conversation with the soldiers, Colin learned the name of this fortress city was “Black Stone City.”

It was the largest city he had seen since arriving in this world.

In size, it might be two or three times larger than the city where the Land of Death and the Human Patchwork Monster resided, perhaps only comparable to the equally enormous and wondrous underground labyrinth.

“The defensive structures on the city wall lack cannons, still primarily old-fashioned weaponry, hmm, possibly with some magic-imbued and laboriously crafted long-range weapons…”

Colin slightly widened his eyes, allowing his pupils to dilate and take in more light. Taking advantage of the high ground, he tried to make out the details of the city still several kilometers away in a straight line.

Looking at it this way, the Human Patchwork Monster didn’t seem to have spread its knowledge.

Otherwise, they might be using magic cannons by now…

Afterward, he shifted his gaze slightly, looking towards an area outside of the city where a vast, boundless plain lay, also the location of the dungeon.

“I traveled by night without realizing the city was right behind me. But come to think of it, I’m not far from Tang Ken. If I run at full speed, I could probably get there in ten minutes. If I’m planning a jailbreak, slipping away unnoticed with a Time Stop would seem like an option.”

Colin was somewhat hesitant, as doing so would mean the end of his current identity.

He still wanted to use this persona to take a look inside the city…

“I’ll wait until I’m inside the city and then look for an opportunity.”

Colin made up his mind.

Before long, the carriage arrived beneath Black Stone City. A rush of foul and nauseating stench assailed them, and Colin covered his nose, only then noticing the swathes of rag-clad refugees outside the towering city, numbering at least a few thousand, or even tens of thousands.

But due to poor sanitation management, excrement was scattered everywhere, mosquitoes and flies swarmed, and the air was tainted with a stench like that of a cesspool.

It wasn’t until they reached the city gate that things improved somewhat.

Since there were nobles in the carriage, they were almost not checked at all and were directly let through.

Some refugees watched enviously as the carriage entered the city from a distance.

Regrettably, for them, the towering high walls were as insurmountable as a chasm, an obstacle many would not be able to overcome in their lifetimes.

After the carriage rolled over the rammed earth road marked with deep ruts at the city gate, it entered Black Stone City.

The world inside was not much better; rough buildings made of dirt, stone, and wood were haphazardly erected, and many slightly better dressed residents curiously peered over.

After a while, the chaotic buildings began to give way to more orderly ones, and the material also changed to neatly processed rectangular yellow soil stones. The ground was now paved with stone bricks.

Before long, the carriage stopped in front of a building that looked like a small tavern, a sort of post station.

“Do you have any destination, sir?”

As soon as Colin got down, he saw Helena approaching to inquire, accompanied by the Warden and an old butler.

Why would Lady Helena use such formal language with an ordinary person? Warden Calder looked at the man who had struck him as familiar from the start and was somewhat astonished.

You see, despite his cold demeanour and several ingratiating remarks during the journey, this noble lord did not even bother to reply, and now he was being so polite to someone who shared a carriage with soldiers? Moreover, from her tone, it seemed she might be even considering an invitation?

Could this also be some important person?

Calder couldn’t help but take a second glance at Colin, and the more he watched, the more familiar he seemed…

But for the life of him, he couldn’t recall who it was.

Tch, isn’t speaking up now just inviting trouble… Colin was somewhat speechless, just as he was about to muster the courage to respond in a slightly hoarse voice.

Suddenly, from down the street, a scream erupted:

“Help!!!”
