Chapter 48 -48 Rescue_1
High-pitched voices carried from afar.
Colin and the others turned their heads together, following the sound, and saw that not too far from here, there seemed to have been a conflict.
A man, dressed distinctly from the rest, had a crazed expression, and was frenziedly biting into the person next to him, his slightly protruding fangs latching on, biting off the other’s ear in one go, smearing his face with blood.
Some onlookers wanted to step forward to intervene, but seeing the man’s mad demeanor, they dared not lay a hand on him.
Unlike the bewildered Helena and others, Colin knew at a glance what had happened—Beast Transformation Syndrome.
He sensed tyrannical, deranged emotions emanating from that person.
“Strange, when we passed by there just now, I didn’t feel anything, so why did it suddenly erupt?”
Colin pondered, if there had been that sort of scent just before, as an “upper-tier” infected, he would have been able to directly smell it, yet, he only realized everything at the moment of the outbreak.
Either there might be an incubation period, or it was a random infection.
If such a thing appeared on Earth…
Indeed troublesome.
While he was contemplating, a small squad immediately rushed towards the direction of the incident, swiftly moving to capture the “Beast Transformation Syndrome” infected individual.
Those initially infected with this thing only gained a bit of strength, without many special features, so they weren’t too difficult to deal with.
The capture was very successful.
After this interruption, Helena’s attention was also diverted. She turned her head to Warden Calder and asked, “What’s going on there? That doesn’t look like a common dispute.”
That kind of frantic expression was not something a normal person could display.
“It’s a strange illness that has been ravaging this area for the past few months. Once infected, one immediately becomes crazed, not recognizing friends or family. But you need not worry; this illness only appears among the common people and won’t affect us. We will do everything in our power to ensure your safety… uh…”
Calder, hearing this noble speak to him for the first time, quickly bent slightly to explain, but he was only halfway through when another panicked shout came from the nearby street.
At that moment, his face darkened.
Colin looked towards the commotion and saw another Beast Transformation Syndrome sufferer emerge, arriving at an inconvenient time.
“Are you sure this won’t happen to us?” The old butler frowned and pressed for answers.
“I can assure you of that. Please allow me to be excused for a moment…” Calder said and this time personally went off to deal with the newly mad individual.
What an unlucky day!
Watching him leave, Colin seemed to come back to his senses and replied to Helena’s earlier question, “I should be staying around here for a while.”
“Then, why not settle down here for a bit? We probably also need to rest here for a few days,” Helena suggested.
Thinking it over because of my assured strength, and then the incident occurring, are they trying to win me over to prevent threats? But isn’t that a little too eager? Colin considered for a moment and shook his head slightly:
“No need, I have some things to take care of, so I’ll be leaving now.”
If I stayed with this group of people the whole time, should I still bother saving my teammate?
Helena did not insist on detaining him: “If you encounter any problems in this city during this time, you can come to me. I will do my best to help you as a token of gratitude for your kindness.”
“Then I thank you in advance.”
After finishing, Colin walked towards another direction in Black Stone City, his figure disappearing from sight behind a corner.
After leaving them, he quickly slipped into the narrow streets and after a few turns, without feeling followed, he headed toward the city gate.
“Now that the Warden is protecting Helena, the defenses at the dungeon should be sparse. I need to seize this window of opportunity to spring them from prison first.”
As Colin pondered, he hurried along and soon arrived at the city wall, smelling the faintly wafting odors.
He stopped in his tracks, his gaze piercing from beneath his hood to glance at the gate.
Seeing that the soldiers were only inspecting those entering the city but seemed to have no intention of stopping anyone leaving, he went straight ahead and once more passed through the drawbridge gate hoisted by iron chains.
“If it gets to nighttime, I’ll just scale the wall to get back in.”
Colin looked back, estimating the height of the city wall to be around ten meters, not too difficult to climb over.

With that, he turned his head and quickly made his way toward Tang Ken’s location.
The refugees outside the city, stationed amidst the foul stench, seemed to have been there for an indefinite period, soaked in the putrid air, almost all of them showing signs of malnutrition, with stunted and dwarfish stature.
Some were curled up, others lying down, or sitting against trees, with lifeless eyes and numb expressions, they looked like living zombies straight out of a movie.
To the Colin who hurried past, they showed little reaction, too lethargic even to raise their heads to look, for every movement and every bit of energy spent lessened their chances of surviving until tomorrow.
It was as though they were simply living to stay alive.
Colin even felt that they might not be capable of much thought at all.
But without dwelling on it further, a few minutes later, he moved through the chaotic, stinking crowd and after some searching, found the familiar spot and saw the familiar entrance, where a jail guard stood on duty.
“It’s like I’ve returned to the starting village,” he muttered.
Colin pursed his lips, then without dawdling any longer, sneaked behind the guard, strong-armed the man into the woods, knocked him out with a chokehold, and then stripped off his clothes.
Next, he stuffed a tissue into the man’s mouth, tied him up with rope, and tossed him aside.
After changing into the guard’s clothes, he swaggered up to the dungeon entrance.
At that moment, the main door was locked shut, but Colin didn’t say a word, lifted his foot, and with a buildup of force delivered a kick. With just two or three blows, the wooden dungeon door was kicked open in less than three seconds.
“After that incident, they didn’t even bother to replace it with an iron door,” Colin grumbled as he saw the downward sloping corridor appear before him and plunged straight down, quickly reaching the first underground level and seeing the death row inmates in the cells lining the corridor.
At the end of the corridor, three guards, with faces a mix of confusion and surprise, still seemed to be processing what was happening.
From the sound at the main door to now, not even five seconds had passed, and the fact that they managed to grab their weapons and react was already impressive.
But they hadn’t expected that the person charging down would be “one of their own”?
“Captain!” cried out an inmate from his cell, a man with a scruffy beard and unkempt hair, his legs shackled with iron chains, who rushed to the front of the bars in delight.
“Tang Ken?” Colin gave him a quick look to confirm he was the man he was looking for, then walked straight over.
“Captain, I’ve been watching. The keys are with that…”
Tang Ken was mid-sentence when he saw Colin lift his leg and deliver a kick to the bars.
Bang!
In the sound of the vibration, dust fell from the ceiling of the dungeon, and one of the iron bars was kicked clean off.
This directly dumbfounded Tang Ken, who was still in his cell: “Can we do it like this?”
