After saying that, Chen Lu parked the car in front of a villa’s gate. “I think this one is pretty good, with convenient access along the roadside. You both can take a look,” said Chen Lu as she got out of the car.
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng actually preferred not to have a place right along the roadside, but since Chen Lu recommended it, they trusted her and thought they’d check it out first. After all, there was no rush, and one doesn’t simply decide on a house after a single viewing. If nothing went wrong, they could possibly live there for a long time, so it was better to view several options before deciding.
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng got out of the car and followed Chen Lu to the door.
As Chen Lu was about to open the villa’s gate, they were stopped by someone.
A young man named Ruiming blocked their path. “You are here to view the villa? Do you even know that there are requirements for living in a villa?”
Lu Ruisheng chuckled, “If we weren’t eligible, would the housing rental agency have sent someone to show us around?”
Ruiming looked at Chen Lu, “Little sister, you must have been deceived by them. They have been here at the base for only a month; they aren’t eligible to rent a villa.”
Chen Lu retorted, “Don’t you know there are special contributions? I’m not foolish; don’t I understand my job? You must be the new one here?”
Though Ruiming knew about special contributions, he also knew how difficult these were to qualify for, which made him dislike the couple even more, especially this man, who gave off a certain authoritative vibe that he found oppressive and annoying.
He addressed Chen Lu affectionately, “Little sister, my uncle is the Base Commander. Now that I’ve told you, I want you to know how much I detest these two. You know what to do, right?”
Chen Lu eyed the slick young man before her, “I’m not your sister. Even if your uncle is the Base Commander, you still have to follow the rules, don’t you?”
Ruiming, getting angry at the resolute young woman in front of him, said, “What if I don’t want to follow the rules? I’ll say it plainly—if you rent them the villa, you’re going against my uncle, against the Base Commander.”
Gu Pan couldn’t let Chen Lu stand in front of them taking all the heat, as this was their personal dispute with the man before them.
So, she stepped forward, “Why don’t we go talk to your uncle and see how the Base Commander uses his authority to oppress others?”
Ruiming smirked, “Hah, you think you can meet my uncle? You’re not qualified. I tell you, if you apologize to me and promise not to come back to the villa area, I might consider letting you off.”
Lu Ruisheng responded, “If you are sick, go to the hospital. We are busy and have no time to play with fools.”
Ruiming, utterly enraged by Lu Ruisheng’s words, momentarily forgot that Lu Ruisheng was skilled in combat, and he threw his fist at Lu Ruisheng’s face.
Yet his effort and strength were so lacking that Lu Ruisheng easily grabbed his wrist and performed a shoulder throw. With a loud thump, Ruiming landed on the ground like a large toad, wailing in pain.
Gu Pan looked down at him, “Didn’t get enough of a beating? Do you enjoy being beaten up so much?”
Ruiming, inflamed, scrambled up, “If you have the guts, just wait here. I refuse to believe no one can deal with you.”
Lu Ruisheng replied, “No time.”
“You scared?” Ruiming thought Lu Ruisheng was afraid, as he stood holding his waist, his neck tilted back, covered in dust, looking utterly foolish.
Lu Ruisheng laughed and said, “Are you really that foolish? Too busy to understand?”
“When will you be free then?” Ruiming shouted hoarsely.
Gu Pan thought for a moment, “What’s your uncle’s name, which Base Commander is he? I really want to go ask what kind of high-ranking official would indulge his relatives this much.”
Ruiming couldn’t let them go find his uncle. His uncle didn’t know about these things, otherwise, his uncle would break his legs.
So naturally, he couldn’t tell. He could only say to Gu Pan, “You wait, I have a hundred ways to kill you.” After saying that, he limped away. After all, he couldn’t beat them alone; he needed more time to think of a plan or find more people to take revenge.
Gu Pan shook her head watching him, a hundred ways, really. He dared to say anything. She herself couldn’t think of a hundred ways to kill someone. This guy really was used to talking big, but it wasn’t important because she wouldn’t let his uncle stay a Base Commander for long.
Watching Ruiming run off, Gu Pan said to Chen Lu, “Let’s continue house hunting.”
Chen Lu was a bit distracted. Although she knew she wasn’t wrong, she was still a bit afraid of offending others, sometimes doubting whether she was right. But when it came to crucial moments, she heated up, unable to think much.
Gu Pan noticed her concern and patted her on the shoulder, “Don’t worry, we are also relatives of the leadership. He wouldn’t dare to do much. You stood up for us, and we won’t let him retaliate. Once we settle on a house, if he troubles you, you can come to us.”
Chen Lu, reassured by Gu Pan’s words, finally smiled, “Sis, you’re amazing. Let’s continue looking at houses.”
Saying so, she led them to the yard. It wasn’t big, likely intended for growing vegetables without any ornamental flower beds.
They walked along the brick path toward the house door. The house was simple, without many designs, also to save materials.
The second floor even had a terrace, which was nice.
Upon entering, there was a living room, rooms on each side, all facing south. The north side had the kitchen, dining area, and bathroom.
The second floor was also straightforward: a study, a bedroom, a bathroom, and beyond that was the terrace.
The inside furniture was simple, but complete, not new though, probably scavenged from outside. The overall style was quite plain—just white, concrete floor, wooden stairs, barely fitting into a rustic style.
Regarding the layout, Gu Pan was satisfied. But facing the roadway wasn’t appealing to her. She asked Chen Lu, “Is there one with the same layout but not adjoining the roadway, perhaps in the South District?”
Chen Lu thought for a moment and checked her notebook, “There is another one, a bit further back. It might be a bit far when coming and going.”
Gu Pan thought, they’d be driving in the base anyhow, so the distance didn’t really matter.
So she said, “Okay, a bit far is alright. We aren’t commuting, and we have a car, these are minor issues.”
Their truck could be parked at the base warehouse parking lot, as arranged with Qin Jun. It would stay there until they needed to take it out. Their residence didn’t have parking for such a large vehicle anyway.
The next time they go out, they would just store the car back in the “Space”. They could always find an excuse for not driving it back, nobody would mind. When needed, they would just change the license plate and drive it back. After all, Lu Ruisheng had collected a bunch of license plates for such purposes; they were well prepared for this, no need to worry.
Chen Lu then drove them along the main road heading north. As they neared the North District, Chen Lu took a turn, arriving at a small yard separated by two houses from the roadside.
