Chapter 192 -192: Could it Be Schizophrenia?

They got out of the car, opened the door and went in, finding it had the same layout as the previous place, just situated a bit farther back.

Chen Lu said, “If we were going by market prices, this one wouldn’t be as expensive as the one we just saw. You can even see the North District from here. I was thinking since you all are staying for free, why not stay in the more expensive one?”

Gu Pan laughed; this girl was always considerate of them, “This is nice. We prefer quiet, and ideally, a place on the edge with a larger surrounding area. We freelance, so we might have more stuff.”

Chen Lu suddenly remembered something, “Speaking of which, there’s another place that may even suit you better; it’s nearby.”

Gu Pan asked, “Would it be convenient to take a look now?”

Chen Lu nodded, “Of course, it’s very close. We can just cut across this alley and I can show you around the house. It’s right next to a forest, if that’s not an issue for you.”

Gu Pan shook her head, “Not at all, being next to a forest is better than being next to other houses.” She wasn’t very fond of socializing, so this would save her a lot of hassle.

Leading them through an adjacent alley, Chen Lu introduced the area, “You see, there’s a forest, specially preserved when the base was built. It’s a shame that the climate prevented the trees from thriving, but once the weather improves, this environment will be the best.”

Looking at the poplar forest, Gu Pan did think it was pretty nice, although she knew the trees wouldn’t grow well in the next couple of years.

Following Chen Lu, they arrived at the house. She opened the main door, and everybody entered the courtyard.

Gu Pan noticed the place was more than twice as big as the previous ones they had seen, particularly the side next to the forest which had a huge open space, big enough to park a truck.

Where the previous ones could barely fit one car, this space was indeed vast.

The backyard wasn’t small either. Gu Pan thought that they could even set up their own greenhouse—it was really nice.

Gu Pan turned to Lu Ruisheng, “What do you think about this place?”

Lu Ruisheng nodded, “I think it’s good.”

Chen Lu took them around the yard, and Gu Pan was genuinely satisfied. With such a large yard, they could bring out the Breeding Eggs from the Space and hatch them, and then set up chicken coops in the yard.

The base had recently started building poultry barns too. They couldn’t rely solely on the military to hunt forever. The upper management hadn’t been too busy before, but now they had started developing this sector. No one had anticipated the acid rain, so getting livestock and poultry wasn’t easy, but there was an urgency to proceed with that, lest it becomes even harder should another disaster strike.

Gu Pan also thought about providing Breeding Eggs to the base at the right time, in exchange for more contribution points.

Of course, they couldn’t just bring out the Breeding Eggs directly, they needed a plausible source, or else suddenly producing Breeding Eggs, when eggs were scarce, would arouse suspicion. They would come up with an explanation when the time came.

There was a door on the side of the courtyard wall, leading directly into the forest—perfect for their needs. It would be convenient for any secret projects they had in mind.

Gu Pan said to Chen Lu, “Then let’s settle on this one. We trust your choice.”

Chen Lu asked, remembering something, “But don’t you still have more than a month left on your previous rental? Wouldn’t that be a waste?”

She had a memorable impression of Gu Pan and clearly remembered the duration of their lease.

“We have friends coming, so we’ll let them stay there. When the rent is up, they can come to you if they want to renew it.”

“It’s great to have friends coming, especially at a time like this. To have loved ones nearby is a blessing.”

“Indeed, we are genuinely happy they’re here. You know, we can consider ourselves friends now, too. You’re welcome to come over anytime.”

Chen Lu was extremely cheerful. Her dark little face beamed with a bright white smile that radiated sincerity, “Really?”

Gu Pan wasn’t sure if she was asking about the offer of friendship or the invitation, but either way, it was genuine, “Of course, you are our first friend since we arrived at the base.”

Chen Lu’s eyes sparkled with joy, “Then I’ll be sure to take you up on that offer.”

“Do we need to take care of any paperwork now?” Gu Pan inquired further.

“The procedures are a bit more complicated for this one. You’ll need to come back to the center with me to sign the contract before moving in.”

“So, when’s the earliest we can move in? It’s a bit crowded at our current place and we have extra people.”

“The paperwork will only take an hour, and you can move right after. Unless you need to pick a specific day.”

Gu Pan smiled, “In the apocalypse, who cares about that? We’ll move in this afternoon.”

Chen Lu thought about it and agreed. Frankly, no one moving into the base cared about choosing an auspicious day, “That’s true. I’ll take the afternoon off and help you move then.”

Gu Pan replied with a smile, “No need, our things are not numerous. Moreover, our friends are staying there. We’ll move gradually. Today we’ll just bring our personal items over. Once we’re settled in, we’ll have you over for a meal.”

“Alright, no objections here. Let’s go take care of the paperwork,” Chen Lu said gleefully. For her, having friends like Gu Pan was different than mere colleagues; this was a real friend.

They locked up and Chen Lu drove them back in her Golf Cart.

On the way, a short-haired girl wearing a tracksuit and full of vitality walked toward them. When she entered the building, Gu Pan was startled—Song Xiner?

The other person noticed Gu Pan’s gaze but didn’t seem surprised and smiled, nodding at her.

The cart quickly passed by, and Gu Pan asked Lu Ruisheng beside her, “Did you see that?”

Lu Ruisheng nodded, “I saw, but it doesn’t quite seem like her.”

Gu Pan said, “Indeed, could she have a split personality?”

Under normal circumstances, Song Xiner, even if not intercepting them, would not greet them, let alone with a smile. Thinking of Song Xiner’s laugh made Gu Pan’s skin crawl.

Lu Ruisheng couldn’t figure it out either, “Maybe, what doesn’t happen in the apocalypse?”

“Right, she must have some psychological issue.”

“Anyway, better to ignore her when we can.”

Soon, Chen Lu drove them back to the housing center.

They went in, and Chen Lu went to get a form from the manager, filled in the villa’s room number, then registered with their IDs and work permits, and finally they got a permanent residency certificate. Now everything was settled.

With all the forms completed, they took the keys to their new home, bid farewell to Chen Lu, and left.

On their way back, they stopped by the bank to deposit their contribution points. Even though they could keep it in the Space, when in Rome, do as the Romans do, right?

Once inside, it wasn’t crowded, so they didn’t have to queue and went directly to a window.

The teller was stunned when they mentioned depositing thirty thousand contribution points, and had to confirm, “How many?”

Gu Pan replied, “Thirty thousand.”

The teller said, “I need to talk to the manager. Please wait a moment.”

Soon enough, the manager arrived—a woman in her thirties, who courteously escorted them to a VIP counter to personally handle their transaction.
