Squad Leader Fang sighed helplessly and said to them, “This is my daughter, Fang Lanlan. Her mother passed away early, and she has been introverted since she was little. During the severe cold, someone sneaked into our house to steal in the middle of the night, and she got scared again, so she’s quite resistant to strangers. Fortunately, I’ve been teaching her martial arts over the years, so at least she has the ability to protect herself in case something happens. There’s nothing else I could ask for. Staying alive is what counts. Don’t hold it against her.”
Gu Pan understood as well. This disaster had brought irreversible harm to so many people; just being alive was good enough. What was there to fuss about over such trifles?
She said, “It’s okay, we understand.” After finishing, Gu Pan placed the rice they had brought on the ground: “Squad Leader Fang, here is a little token of our appreciation. Leave it here to air out before you bring it inside. Although we are not infected with the epidemic, it’s still better to be cautious.”
Squad Leader Fang looked at the things they had brought and gave it some thought but did not refuse: “Then I’ll accept it graciously, our home indeed doesn’t have much in the way of supplies, and finding more hasn’t been easy lately. Thank you.”
Lu Ruisheng said, “Don’t mention it, Squad Leader Fang has helped us a lot too.” After finishing, he checked his watch and said, “It’s getting late. We need to head out and won’t linger any longer.”
Squad Leader Fang politely said, “Okay, then. I won’t see you out.”
Gu Pan said, “Please stay, Squad Leader Fang.”
After leaving Squad Leader Fang’s house, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng went back home. Everyone was taking a day of rest today. Recently, they didn’t plan to go to inhabited areas and wanted to wander the mountains instead, to see if they could hunt something alive. They had been eating dried and preserved meat for a while and hadn’t had any fresh meat; if they could find rabbits or birds on the mountains, they could at least have a decent meal.
Because they didn’t intend to go to crowded places, they didn’t wear protective suits but carried masks and goggles, and wore disposable raincoats for an additional layer of protection. They had taken a lot from supermarkets during their supply runs, so there was no need to conserve too much.
Not all eight of them had come; Chen Shaonan and Duan Shumei stayed at home to work on installing alarm systems. They had many batteries, so they wanted to set up several infrared alarms at the door to sleep more peacefully.
Feng Zhekai had recently been focusing on traditional medicine, with Lu Xuerong helping him at home.
So it was just Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng, along with Cheng Yang and Chen Lang, who had come out, and for their first time going up the mountain, they stuck together in a group of four.
Originally, this residential mountain area didn’t have many animals, and with the previous severe cold spell, they hadn’t seen any prey to hunt after walking for an hour.
After moving deeper into the mountain, Gu Pan finally spotted a rabbit. She raised her sleeve arrow, fired, and struck the rabbit in a vital spot.
Cheng Yang ran over quickly: “We’ll have meat for dinner tonight.”
Cheng Lang followed swiftly behind.
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng hastened their steps to catch up.
But just as they were about to reach the rabbit, a man and two women came walking from the opposite direction, dressed in what seemed like good condition.
The woman leading the group had long hair; maintaining long hair these days was truly rare. Gu Pan had already cut her hair to shoulder length; because of the water shortage, they couldn’t wash their hair frequently. Even though Gu Pan had “Space” with water, she couldn’t afford to stand out too much in front of others. However, the woman opposite them looked very clean, which implied that water might not be scarce for them.
This made Gu Pan speculate — even if they had stored water, they wouldn’t be so wasteful with it. Did they have a water source? It couldn’t be well water; during the epidemic, well water could also be contaminated, unless it was from a very deep well. But in the city, it wasn’t likely that anyone would drill for deep groundwater. That left only one possibility: a mountain spring. Was there a spring on this mountain? Could it be her side hadn’t found it?
Gu Pan’s mind was preoccupied with thoughts of resources.
However, the woman in front of them clearly wasn’t as friendly. Even with a mask on, her anger was evident from her eyes and brows.
The woman, holding a bow and arrow, asked them reproachfully, “I saw this rabbit first, what gives you the right to shoot it?”
Gu Pan hadn’t expected that even after the apocalypse, there would still be such clueless people, “Just because you see something, it becomes yours? What, if you see the Earth, does it belong to you too?”
But then she remembered from her past life, in the third year of the apocalypse, there were still rich or powerful people who lived indulgently and looked down on the poor. She understood, albeit only slightly.
Of course, the person across from her was armed with a bow and arrow, suggesting some level of skill. Perhaps her archery was truly formidable, which accounted for her arrogance?
Unable to figure it out, Gu Pan didn’t want to keep guessing anyway. She wouldn’t back down, not one to start trouble, but also never one to shy away from it.
The woman, Lin Feifei, noticed Gu Pan scrutinizing her and was displeased, “Anything I, Lin Feifei, take an interest in, I won’t let go to anyone else.” She lifted her chin, full of pride.
Lu Ruisheng took a step forward, “Whether you’re interested or not is irrelevant to us. If we hunted the prey, you’d better have the skills to snatch it.” As he spoke, he prepared himself for combat.
Cheng Yang and Chen Lang stepped forward as well, both ready to fight and backing up Gu Pan.
Just as Lin Feifei was about to speak, a girl of similar age, with short hair and slightly shorter stature, pulled at Lin Feifei’s clothes, “Cousin, Uncle said not to cause trouble, let’s just leave.”
Upon hearing this, Lin Feifei didn’t look like she was going to leave. Instead, she became even angrier, glaring at the girl, “Lin Mengmeng, can you stop playing the good guy all the time? Are you just trying to show off your gentleness and thoughtfulness in front of Brother Yuan Jiang?”
The girl named Lin Mengmeng became anxious, clenching her fists tightly, “Cousin, I really don’t have any other intentions towards Brother Yuan Jiang. With the apocalypse upon us, I just want to survive. You can be mad at me, even scold me when we get back, but let’s just go now, please.”
As she spoke, she leaned in to whisper in Lin Feifei’s ear, but before she could finish, Lin Feifei pushed her away, looking at the men with them, “Brother Yuan Jiang, I really don’t get it. How can you always think Lin Mengmeng is kind and sensible? She’s just pretending.”
Yuan Jiang also became anxious and stepped forward, “Feifei, let’s talk about whatever it is when we get back. It’s the end of the world now, don’t be so willful.”
This remark about her being willful really got to Lin Feifei, “Right, right, I’m willful, I’m unreasonable, I’m not as good as Lin Mengmeng in anything, but don’t forget, when you were trapped in the club, it was my family who took you in, shared our resources with you. You’re my fiancé, and yet you don’t take my side, constantly protecting Lin Mengmeng. Do you even have a conscience?”
Yuan Jiang frowned at Lin Feifei’s words, “Lin Feifei, do you really need to misconstrue others’ intentions like this? What’s going on? Do you understand the other party? Just throwing a tantrum? Have you forgotten what our Master said?”
Gu Pan watched the trio, understood a bit of their situation from their words, though the actual details were unclear. She was just enjoying the drama. But one thing was clear to her—Lin Mengmeng and Yuan Jiang were the smart ones. They recognized that Gu Pan’s group was stronger than theirs. However, Lin Feifei was truly too arrogant.
From their conversation, it was apparent that they belonged to what was known as the Inner Circle club.
Gu Pan guessed Lin Feifei had been trapped there since the beginning of the apocalypse, never venturing out, clueless about what the outside world was actually like.
She had always been in that villa district, living comfortably without a care for food or drink, thus still preserving a certain air of a spoiled second generation.
