Chapter 77 -77: Arrogance

But these had nothing to do with Gu Pan, and she didn’t have time to waste here, so she went over, picked up the rabbit, and said to Lu Ruisheng and the others, “Let’s go.”

At this moment, Lin Feifei, holding her bow and arrow, stepped in front of Gu Pan, “I said, the rabbit is mine.”

Before Gu Pan could speak, Lu Ruisheng drew his dagger and with a flick of his hand severed Lin Feifei’s bowstring, “Step aside.”

Now scared, Lin Feifei did not want to appear weak and shouted at Yuan Jiang, “Brother, you’re a grown man. Are you really just going to stand there and watch me be bullied?”

Yuan Jiang’s frown was so deep it could crush a fly. He stepped forward and said to Lu Ruisheng, “I’m sorry, my sister is young and doesn’t know better…”

Before Yuan Jiang could finish, Lin Feifei glared at him with frustrated disappointment and snapped, “Why are you such a coward? You’re a promising young member of the Martial Arts Association. How can you be so subservient to others, where is your backbone?”

Her family was renowned in the martial arts world, and as their only daughter, she’d been coddled like a star all her life. Although the apocalypse had come, it hadn’t greatly affected them thanks to the staff and cafeteria that the club had long employed, ensuring ample food supplies and resources, along with their own mountain spring water. So far, the apocalypse hadn’t touched them much. Even though the elders had reminded her many times to be aware of the hardship of current living conditions and not to behave as before, she hadn’t taken much of it to heart.

Plus, she could shoot a bow and arrow and knew some hand-to-hand combat; with her martial school’s brothers looking out for her, no one dared disrespect her, so she’d never suffered a loss and always got what she wanted.

Hearing Lin Feifei’s words, Yuan Jiang let out a heavy sigh, “Feifei, today you’re in the wrong. The rabbit was indeed hunted by them; stop being unreasonable.”

As a martial artist, he could sense that the several people on the other side were not simple, which is why he didn’t mind lowering his stance. In these apocalyptic times, he understood the wisdom in not standing out.

Lin Mengmeng quickly tried to mediate, “Cousin, can’t we just go back and talk about this? Let’s not cause trouble for the family.”

Gu Pan felt these two were sensible; with them talking like this, her side really couldn’t make a move. Of course, they didn’t want to get into a physical fight with the others anyway—the epidemic hadn’t passed, and they didn’t want physical contact with anyone. If it came to it, they would use a sleeve arrow or a gun. Killing to protect oneself was a common occurrence in the apocalypse, but it appeared a fight wouldn’t be necessary, given Yuan Jiang and Lin Mengmeng’s wits.

But Yuan Jiang and Lin Mengmeng’s peacemaking just fan the flames of Lin Feifei’s rage, and her laugh sounded almost hysterical, “I’m being unreasonable? I’m causing trouble for the family? Are you two just trying to gaslight me, make me feel inferior, then get together yourselves all high and mighty?”

At this point, Gu Pan didn’t even know what to say. She might as well continue watching the drama unfold; after all, in the apocalypse, there were no new shows to watch. Since it somehow resembled the plot of a soap opera, she decided to keep watching.

Yuan Jiang looked up, exhaled deeply, and then apologized to Lu Ruisheng, “I’m sorry, I apologize on her behalf for today’s disturbance.”

Just as Lin Feifei was about to speak, Yuan Jiang covered her mouth and dragged her away.

Lin Mengmeng picked up the bow and arrow that Lin Feifei had dropped, nodded at Gu Pan and the others, then followed behind and ran.

She had seen the weapons on Gu Pan and her companions, and they all seemed to emanate an air of deadly intent. Although she’d never ventured out, she’d read plenty of post-apocalyptic novels to know that anyone who had survived to this point was not to be trifled with—she just wanted to stay alive, so she did not want to offend anyone.

Gu Pan was somewhat disappointed; she had wanted to watch a bit longer, but they had left just when she was about to get comfortable and enjoy the show. It was as if they were in a hurry to get out of there.

Watching them leave, Cheng Yang couldn’t hide his excitement, “Man, I’m lucky to have witnessed such a scene again.”

Chen Lang was utterly perplexed, “Brother Cheng Yang, did you used to know someone with a mental illness?”

Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng exchanged glances and laughed. Indeed, at a time like this, Lin Feifei really seemed like a lunatic.

Lu Ruisheng naturally took the rabbit from his wife’s hands and carried it himself. How could he let his wife do such work?

The four of them wandered around the mountain for a while longer, but they didn’t see anything else they could hunt. The mountain was really too poor.

So they had no choice but to head back down.

Taking the shorter path down, they passed by Squad Leader Fang’s place. They saw Fang Lanlan coming out to throw away trash. But as soon as she saw them, she whizzed back into the courtyard and disappeared, her speed truly impressive.

Cheng Yang blinked and asked Gu Pan, “Sister, did you just see someone run by?”

Gu Pan had to admit that Fang Lanlan really was incredibly fast. If it weren’t for the apocalypse, she could definitely break the world record in the 100 meters.

She said with a smile, “Yes, that’s Fang Lanlan, Squad Leader Fang’s daughter. It’s the same family we asked about things before.”

Cheng Yang’s face showed envy, “She runs so fast, that’s a talent. I’m jealous.”

Chen Lang also said, “Indeed, I wish I had that talent. It would probably increase my chances of survival in the apocalypse.”

As Lu Ruisheng listened to their conversation, the corners of his mouth lifted. Even though it was the apocalypse, when these people were together, it was actually quite nice and cheerful.

Back at home, Cheng Yang and Chen Lang took care of the rabbit while Gu Pan said she would cook today. She wasn’t comfortable using any other water, and for group meals, she preferred to do it herself, using water from the Space.

Everyone liked it when Gu Pan cooked because it was delicious. She had many seasonings and was skilled.

Of course, Gu Pan couldn’t make anything too extravagant. She just needed to use ingredients that wouldn’t seem out of place now, like potatoes and dried vegetables.

One rabbit couldn’t make many dishes. With more people than meat, they just put in more vegetables to stew along with some glass noodles and cooked a large pot full, plus a big pot of rice.

Everyone enjoyed the meal that night greatly.

During the meal, Gu Pan shared her thoughts, “We ran into Lin Feifei today, from the Inner Circle club. Her hair and clothes were very clean, so I think they have a source of water.”

Lu Ruisheng also said, “I agree. It’s probably not well water; most likely it’s spring water.”

Chen Shaonan said, “They must have hidden the surface location of the spring and are piping the water directly to their place.”

Gu Pan said, “Our water supply is not abundant right now but it’s enough. So there’s no need for us to fight over it. However, we need to know the exact location of this water. If we need it in the future, we must be able to find it precisely.”

Everyone agreed with this. Keeping everything under their control was indeed a survival rule in the apocalypse.

They also discussed the three people they met today, figuring out their approximate living conditions. They likely hadn’t been outside much and had stayed in this area, so they hadn’t contracted the plague and had supplies reserved. Therefore, these people probably still didn’t realize the cruelty of the apocalypse. Even if someone had thought about what it could be like, without deeper experiences, they truly couldn’t understand it.
