As the last notification faded away, a faction member emerged from the trees, his footsteps quiet on the bushy ground.
"Jackie has arrived with the supplies, leader." he said, his voice low and efficient. "He’s waiting for you to come over once you’re done."
Dave nodded, his gaze still fixed on the beasts’ corpses scattered around him. "I’ll head over once I’ve finished here," he said, his voice firm. The faction member nodded and vanished into the trees, leaving Dave alone with the silence of the forest.
With a quiet resolve, Dave turned his attention back to the beasts’ bodies that laid on the floor. At that moment, White’s words had started ringing in his mind. He recalled him mentioning something about a beast crystal, located in the chest area of the beasts.
Dave’s hand instinctively went to the sword at his side, the familiar weight of the blade could be felt in his hands. He had obtained it from the casino base, and it had served him well so far.
Without hesitation, Dave knelt beside one of the dead beasts and began to carve and slice its chest open. The blade bit into the flesh with a soft crunch, and Dave’s eyes scanned the cavity, searching for any sign of the beast crystal.
The air was filled with the scent of blood, but Dave’s focus remained fixed on his task, his determination to uncover the truth behind White’s statement about beast crystals was driving him forward.
As he sliced through the beast’s chest, a faint yellow glow emanated from the cavity, casting an eerie light on the surrounding foliage. He dug deeper, his hands filling with the thick, black blood that seemed to cling to his skin like tar.
The metallic scent of blood wafted up, mingling with the earthy smell of the forest floor. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Dave’s fingers gripped tightly around a hard, crystalline object. He pulled it out, and the crystal glinted in the fading light, its facets reflecting the yellow glow.
The crystal was as hard as a diamond, with its shape similar yet distinctively different. Dave could feel the energy emanating from it, a gentle hum that seemed to vibrate through his very being. "So, what that madman said was right," he muttered, a chuckle escaping his lips. "There really is a crystal in these beasts."
Just then, the system popped up above his face, as a notification message was shown to him.
[A Beast Crystal has been identified]
[New Main Quest]
[Absorb 5 Million beast crystals and unlock a new form]
The words hung in the air, tantalizing and mysterious. Dave’s eyes furrowed with curiosity as he read the quest message, his mind racing with possibilities. "A new form?" he wondered aloud, his curiosity piqued.
Suddenly, another system message had appeared above his face.
[Do you wish to absorb the Beast Crystal?]
Dave hesitated for a moment before responding, "Well, do I have any other option?" He rhetorically before clicking on the yes option, and instantly, the energy from the crystal began to flow into his body.
It seeped in through his pores of his body; his ears, his nose, his mouth. The energy filled his senses with a warm, tingling sensation, until suddenly it converged on his heart, and for a moment, it felt like a heavy weight was pressing down on it. The sensation was intense, but it passed quickly, leaving Dave feeling... slightly different. But it was barely noticeable.
[1/5 Million crystals to go]
Dave’s gaze lingered on the notification before he spoke, his voice laced in a non-chalant way. "Welp, that seems more like it."
With methodical precision, Dave continued to slice open the chests of the remaining beasts, extracting the crystals and absorbing their energy into his body. The process was almost rhythmic, the slicing motion becoming a second nature of him as he worked away.
Each crystal he pulled out pulsed vibrantly with a soft, golden-yellow light, and as he absorbed its energy, he could feel something in him changing, but what exactly it was... he couldn’t figure it out yet.
And despite the uncertainty surrounding the "new form" mentioned by the system, and the unknown effects of absorbing the crystals, Dave continued on, as he was driven by a singular focus. He would continue to collect the crystals until he reached the required five million, no matter the cost. The unknown was a luxury he couldn’t afford, and action was his only option.
As he finished extracting the last crystal, Dave noticed a change in the beasts’ bodies. They seemed to be deteriorating at an accelerated rate, their flesh rotting faster than before. The realization dawned on him that the crystals might have been sustaining them, providing them a semblance of life even in death. Without the crystals, their bodies were succumbing to a rapid, natural process of decay.
But Dave wasn’t concerned. With his necromancy ability, he could control the dead bodies regardless of the presence of the crystals. The beasts would still serve as his undead army, bound to his will. With just a thought in his mind, he began to place the corpses into his void space, the dark, empty and endless realm.
As he finished storing the last of the bodies, Dave’s thoughts turned to his next task. It was time to leave the merger faction and escort Ella and Eric back to the casino base. He needed them to be there, so they could be safe, and also to help him spy on whatever might be going on in the base.
And also, just in case a situation arises where he needed information, with their presence in the casino and assistance, he could gather intelligence, discuss strategies, and prepare for any situation that might arise.
